Spot on review, I’ve found that you have to work to get the 90D to get the results you want. However this is an excellent way to improve your photography. Funnily enough I’m looking for a second body and the R6 is foremost in my sights. This is interesting as there will be no 1st & 2nd body, each has its advantages and I believe will compliment each other perfectly.

I've used the 90D since it came out, and I recently decided to give a Lumix a try (G95). The thing that drives me crazy is the cropping. I got used to the crop of an APS-C, but I wasn't prepared for the even bigger crop of the MFT.

I can't tell you how much I value your view in this area. I plan on purchasing the 90d for stills. Further research told me the 90d has two versions of 4k with one having no crop! However I want a full frame. Being as the the new r series hhad overheading issues upon release i began to look at Sony and Panasonic for video. Though the 90d has great video " in my opinion " recortime became the other issue i need addressed. For " me and my needs " you've confirmed my research results when it comes to video. Coming from an 80D, I was torn between these two. I was convinced a full frame would bring me closer to the sharp quality travel, wildlife, nature, and portrait photos I was hoping for from my 80, but the 90 has many improvements over the 80. But the 90 is another cropped sensor. I’m just torn. Thanks for this video. You’re a great teacher. Subscribed.

If you can't get sharp enough images out of an 80D you should consider if the quality of your lenses is good enough. For instance, are you using a convenient superzoom instead of two or more zoomlenses to cover the same range? As Michael pointed out, upgrading to the 90D is pointless if you do not use quality lenses on them. I have used camera's with much lower pixel counts than the 80D and got sharp images nonetheless. Other things to check: are you using the correct IS mode on your lens, is the lens clean, do you have a cheap uv filter on the lens?

Just for the record on battery life. I shoot the r5 with a grip. I recently when to a 5-hour shooting event with two NH batteries in my grip. I got 9900 shots off those two batteries while still getting the full 12 fps! i went ahead and changed to my second set just to make sure i would not drop out of H+ green (12 fps)! I finished that day with 11,000+ shots. This was bird photography and I was purposely trying to put the camera through its paced. I also shot in craw and had two 256 GB cards in the camera. So, I’m thinking that for most people staying in 12 fps mode is not going to be hard provided you aren’t chimping too much. One shoud definitely use the newer NH battery to get the best performance.

Hi Michael, I´m thinking of upgrading to a 90D from my trusty Rebel T6i, though now I´m a little concerned about what you said concerning resolution and lenses with the 90D. I mainly shoot macro with the Tamron 90mm f2.8 (the latest one). I also use the EFS STM 55 - 250 mm for longer reach, the EFS 24mm f2.8, and the EF 50mm f1.8 STM. Would I need to worry about upgrading my lens collection? Budget is a big factor in my photography. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I just got the r6 and after watching ur video weeks ago, I can say that the r6 is by far better than any dslr I've used in the past. The eye auto focus/lock on tracking and customizable back focus buttons make the r6 so easy to use and I rarely miss a shot now! I shoot a ton of indoor sports photography and they evf makes a world of difference. Also I've been using the tamron 70-200 2.8 and tamron 28-75 2.8 incase anyone was wondering. Btw the low light capability is unbelievable! If anyone shoots any low light/indoor photography, and your wanting to upgrade, just go with the r6. You won't regret it. I haven't touched the r5 so I can't vouch for it but I'm guessing the r6 does a little better in low light bc it has lower mp. Also I've cropped in on some of my low light pictures and it still looks great. 20 mp is plenty unless your blowing up past 20x30! Also, I'm not sure what version you used on the video side, but I used 30 mins of 4k 30 in 85 degree weather last and it didn't over heat once and it looked great. There is a 30 min cut off bc of the software tho. I just thought I would give an update on the r6 for people who is on the fence about the r6. This was my 1st mirrorless camera and I don't see ever going back to dslr. Thanks for the video btw.

I think the only thing to say here is it would be great to own BOTH THESE CAMERAS, because they don't really compare very well in terms of usage: we know the 90D is going to be best used outdoors and with available light, and the R6 can do it all but probably best shines indoors, low-light, event work with or without flash etc.

Very important note: Every lens will resolve equally well or better on the 90D than on the older cameras! But not every lens will be able to make full use of the sensor’s potential, which means that the images may look softer on the 90D if you pixel peep. But that is only because you enlarge the image more than you’ll be able to do on the older cameras. So even if the 90D picture looks softer when you pixel peep, it will not look softer if printed to the same size.

@@MMaven Thanks for the video link - I’ve seen it before. Very interesting, and in its own way very relevant too, as to why the images may appear to be softer on the 90D. But not, I think, relevant to why the images aren’t really softer. You want me to make a video? Sadly that’s not going to happen for reasons I can’t give you here. For me the logic seems simple, but I don’t think I can explain it any better, so let me instead give you a challenge: Take, if you will, as closely as possible, the same image twice using the Canon 100-400 version 1 mounted to two different cameras: the 90D and a lower resolution camera - preferably the 80D to compare apples to apples. Make a print of both pictures. You can choose any print size you like, but the size must be the same for both pictures. Then show me how the print from the 90D is worse than the print from the older camera. My prediction is that both prints will either be of the same quality or, more likely, that the print from the 90D will be slightly better.

Hi, I’ve stumbled down the rabbit hole of wanting to replace/upgrade my camera. I currently have a (now discontinued) canon 200d which was perfect for my first ever camera. Mainly used for video and some photography. Now I’m really , really REALLY needing some advice … deciding whether to go for canon 90d, canon mark 5d iv, or canon R7 . The R7 looks attractive to me because of : the autofocus capabilities and the newer technology that come with mirrorless , I’m scared because of not knowing how to use it compared to my traditional camera , I’m embarrassed to say I have only ever used auto on my camera but I’m going to learn how to use manual. Also slightly worried about the ‘overheating’ rumours/problems with mirrorless, but apparently shouldn’t be an issue if I don’t intend to do shoot 30min + .. I’m interested in the canon mark iv because it seemed EVERYONE thinks it’s a beast and amazing but then after research I saw it’s better primarily for photography AND it doesn’t have a flip out screen (a feature I currently have and love) and then obviously the 90d …. I think is a really really good option as it’s a step up (several steps) to what I have and probably the most familiar one I’d be used to .. just scared of thinking the R7 is more superior I think is my problem… would really appreciate your thoughts. FYI I’m an amateur ..

The 90d is a perfectly fine camera for what it was designed to do. For an old grandpa like me, I’m just looking to get excellent family photos. Holidays, get togethers, grandson’s T-ball (no fast movement there with 4 year olds 😂). The 4k is awesome and my Canon 24-105mm f/4 (L), Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, and even my 18-135mm STM all result with sharp photos. The STM lens isn’t L glass sharp but it’s pretty good. It is church mouse quiet and lightening quick with its autofocus. I recorded a personal memorial documentary of my 80 year old parents with the 90d. The first session was about 1 hour and I recorded externally into a Ninja Blade with no problems. I also have a Shogun Inferno. I added the double battery grip and I have good recording times. Don’t get me wrong, if I were a professional, I’d have the R6 but I’m good and this is the last camera I’ll buy.

It's not shutter lag, the black-out is(it almost literally HAS to be) worse on any DSLR, because of the mirror. What you're seeing is a little bit of latency because the image has to be processed and then shown on the EVF. The auto-focus is not even open for comparison. The R6 is, by pretty much all accounts, better than the 1D-X ii.

There's more to a camera than how many megapixels it has, but manufacturers use megapixels like a hook on the end of a fishing line. If you take two images of the same subject, one with a 20 mpx camera and one with a 45 mpx camera, and make an 11×14 inch print of each, they will be identical. No one could tell the difference. Only when you got to really large prints would the 20mpx camera image start to break up. If you routinely make huge prints, or routinely crop small areas of an image and blow them up, maybe you will benefit from the 45mpx. Otherwise, you will never see the difference. An image isn't "better" because it has more megapixels, it can simply be blown up larger. There are tens of thousands of 8x12, 11x14, 16x20 and even 20x30 prints taken with 8, 10, 12 and 16 mpx cameras (and 35 mm film) hanging in galleries around the world. 30,45 and 60 mpx cameras didn't even exist until relatively recently. That never stopped photographers from making beautiful images.

Thanks. You make it sound like your pictures will get softer if you switch from an 80D to a 90D and don't upgrade lenses. Is that really true, or do you really mean that you only need to get better lenses if you want to see the INCREASED resolution available in the 90D? Wouldn't you get at least the same resolution w 90D vs 80D with the same lens?

  • @MMaven

    @MMaven

    3 жыл бұрын

Obviously resolution and viewing size do matter, but it has to do with pixel density and the ability of a lens to resolve the sensor. With the older zooms, yes, you will get softer images on the 90D at 100% for example with the 100-400 v1, than you would with it on say an 80D. Put a v2 on the 90D, and it knocks it out of the park with sharpness. I made a video on thiscCalled Basics of Diffraction that explains it.

Great comparisons! Based solely on budget, I would probably go with the R6 and try to get some of Canon's older USM lenses. I feel as if the lens selection on the 90D is very limited, especially for the EF-S platform, so I might as well try to save money on lenses with a camera better suited to take advantage of not as sharp lenses, which are plentiful on the secondary market. Mind you, I approach both of these cameras in the mindset of the casual shooter who is probably looking at an upgrade from an older APS-C camera. $2,600 is quite a lot for that camera buyer, but they may even have some lenses like the 85 f/1.8, 50 f/1.4, or 35 f/2 that make the costs more or less even out once you look at adding, say, a 400mm f/5.6 or the older 100-400mm zoom, in which case you get a more all-around camera in the R6 with more lenses than if you had gone with the 90D and have to toss out some of your older glass for newer options. Then, having the R6 even sets you up for crossing into the RF lenses later as they adopt more consumer-friendly models and prices.

Your logic is sound. I have both bodies and love the R6, while I just like the 90d. I have 8 lenses, 4 being "L" series and on the approved 5DS/R list, so I can't blame the lenses resolving power for my lack of WOW feeling when reviewing the images, when compared to the same exact test conditions while swapping bodies on a tripod. (all settings/factors/lighting identical with just the cameras tripod distance to subject tripod adjusted for crop factor) If I had the 100-400 ii I would likely be more ecstatic about the 90d, but that lens is down on my priority list due to subject matter; in comparison to portraits, landscape, architectural subjects, and cars. R6 battery life sucks though! lol (I never shoot video on either camera)

If you blow the image of 90D 1:1 compared to 70D, of course 90D will be softer because you zoom in more. But if you print or analyze the images from both cameras at the same size, 90d will have more detail. Higher pixel density will always result in more detail. If "not" then why landscape photographer choose high megapixel cameras? I think you need to do more thorough test before sending the wrong messages.

He spoke on a social media group who uses the 90d and he gathered some of their opinions as well. The 90d is more like a Swiss Army knife or Leatheman of DSLRs. The R6 was built for a different purpose and is more for the pro-mirrorless shooter. If you have several EF lenses and didn’t want to chunk them into the trash, then you have the 90d as an option. Save some money and get some EF (L) glass off eBay or pay premium. The mirrorless cameras are sweet but go check out the price of lenses. If you have that long money, then it’s not a problem. If you’re a pro shooter, I’d say the R6 because of where we are with mirrorless cameras. If you are a weekend photo warrior, the 90d is just fine for what it was designed to do. You have to use it and get better until your skill surpasses its specifications. Just my two pennies
