Canon 10-18 or 10-22? What's the difference?

In this video I compare and contrast the Canon 10-18 and 10-22 crop sensor lenses.

    A coincidence in that I decided to put one up against the other only yesterday and I've had and used both for years. Blown up to 100% in PS. The results, I found the 10-22 a touch sharper at wide end and quite a bit sharper when both zoom in to maximum. I'll definitely be favoring the 10-22.

    For me it's definitely the 10-18 cause I already bought it second hand. It's also compact size which fits well my small hands using the SL3.

    The 10-22 is not quieter @5.47 with the ultrasonic. It is a lot louder than the 10-18 STM. I have both lenses just try video you will see how noisy the USM is. You made the right choice keeping the 10-18.

    I heard no noticeable difference between the two but I was always using them outside. In theory Canon promoted ultrasonic lenses as faster and quieter but I really didn't notice a difference.

    Nice video. I do have a Canon 10-18 lens that I regularly use for Real Estate (Im still new at this) it's my hobby. Im actually a Real Estate Agent . I was thinking on purchasing the 10-22 mm because I feel it would give me a little more light. My settings are usually between 100-400 ISO, F8, RAW files. I have a Canon SL3. I wonder if I should buy the 10-22 mm just to pleased my curiosity. thanks!

    Great video! I'm trying to decide on a lens to use on a Canon 90D for interior real estate photos. Would the 10-22mm win out because of additional low-light capability? Thanks!

  • @FocalPointPhotographyLLC

    @FocalPointPhotographyLLC

    2 жыл бұрын

    No not really. Because you'll be on a tripod and depth of field is important for interior work most likely you'll be at f/8 or close when photographing real estate. The only reason you'd need low light capability is if you're handholding in bad lighting. Because of the tripod the shutter speed will not matter.

  • @FocalPointPhotographyLLC

    I have no experience with the Sigma but in general a constant f-stop lens like the Sigma should be better than a variable aperture lens like the 10-18. Of course this is just in theory, but in a vast majority of cases this holds true. Now you have me thinking about getting the Sigma!

    IS reduces vibrations to prolong the exposure time, and long exposure times are great for handheld landscape or handheld real estate or handheld macro photography, however long exposure times are not good for human portrait, social or event photography, because humans find it difficult to keep still for long periods to prevent photographic blur; human photography often requires a flash, else ramp up the ISO sensitivity multiplication for short exposure times, and live with the noise.

    I'm not sure but I don't think it is...I think a couple of the M mount lenses for cameras like the M50 may be STM lenses. Not sure about the 10-18 though. If it is, you're right, it would be quieter.

    Horses for courses and each to their own really. The 10-22 f3.5-4.5 USM is the classic with good range and wider aperture. The 10-18 f4.5-5.6 IS STM is small, lightweight, STM for quiet video, and very cheap, but the zoom range and the aperture are compromised. A Tokina 11-16 f2.8 has great aperture, but the zoom range is really compromised.

    @@phoebebuffay6405 No worries...you would multiply the mm of the lens by 1.6. In this case a 10-22mm lens would function like a 16-35 on a full-frame camera.

    3 minutes in, "That stop, maybe a stop and a half, maybe call it a stop" is 2/3 stop (3.5 vs 4.5 or 4.5 vs 5.6).
