Cannes Digest: Conquer Your Fear of Failure with Alain de Botton

Philosopher Alain de Botton takes to the stage at Cannes Lions 2012 to explore how a fear of failure inhibits creativity, before suggesting how a newspaper like the Sun might have dealt with some of the stories from great works of literature, and taking a look at how we can all shake off a fear of failure to thrive creatively.

3:14 I think we need to have within ourselves a story of how we might fail, and that failure be a noble failure. 3:24 Great thing about Japanese aesthetics is they know all about noble failure. Most great works of Japanese art are recounting stories of people who have lost but are not losers. 3:33 We need to find ways of accommodating failure into the narrative of our lives, so that when we do fail, we do not feel we'll have to accuse ourselves always of being losers. One of the great enemies of creativity at a corporate and a personal level, is the fear of failure. As Nietzsche told us, no creativity can occur without an accommodation with failure. If you are not prepared to fail, whether that's as a client, as an agency, as an individual. If you are not prepared to fail, you cannot succeed. 4:04 The demand that we constantly produce success is the most inhibiting and most failure-inducing prejudice of our times. We need to get over it.

Human beings are not going to overcome the fear of failure at the behest of an influential speaker however persuasive he might be. That is exactly why it is defined as a fear and this is a very intrinsic fear which has been inculcated during the early years of our life.making it not so intrinsic might I add.
