Age is just the number! I have seen in my life many senior people who can flatten much younger attackers. Seniors have another big advantage that is the Surprise element. most of the time The younger attackers will not expect a senior to fight back and he will take him or her an easy target... always fight back never give up... Thanks for a fantastic video..

I’ve watched many of these types of videos for senior cane defense, and NONE of them teach one of the most fundamental rules. As with any weapon, it is essential that your movements are designed to prevent the weapon (or cane) being taken away. For example, a quick pullback of the thrust (or “poke”) is of ultimate importance. PULL THE CANE BACK TO YOUR BODY ASAP!

If the attacker is quite able, would he be able to intercept the poke move/grab the cane? If yes, then it ends pretty much there, no?

There was a case in England several years ago two thugs stole a purse from an old lady and ran away. She had no training but she chased them down and beat both of them. When police showed up she was sitting on top of both of them and when they would move she would give them a thump with her cane. When police asked her why she had chased them her reply was "They made me mad."

  • @inregionecaecorum

In a lot of cases not, my balance is compromised, that being one of the reasons I use a cane and no way does my strength match that of a twenty something assailant. I can't run any more and my knees and ankles can give way at any moment. I think in reality what this video is showing is confidence boosting and exercise. A cane is essentially a force magnifier and an object for distancing yourself from an assailant, but if they grab your cane, what then. I am sure I can wave a cane around like I was Matt Easton but could I land an accurate blow? Well I really really don't want to chance it, I practice my thousand yard stare :)

By adding daily exercise in the basic movements that a cane defense requires, almost ANY person can improve their condition. And, pretty quickly, like in just a few weeks. I am also too old to run, so by mastering the deep stabbing thrust, which can be delivered VERY fast, my chances are improved a lot. A determined and practiced thrust is very difficult to defend if you are not expecting an old man to know how to do it. Swinging a cane is too time consuming and allows the attacker to duck, or block and take it away. The Romans knew this, and trained their soldiers to stab, not slash. They won a few fights. Give it a try for a few weeks. Place a dummy (a piece of foam or a small mattress against a wall, and STAB it every day, just ten times. Get fast. Hit hard. Retract and stab again. Aim for the opposite surface of the material - not the near surface. The idea is to penetrate the target, not just touch it. You'll get it.

@@mister-amazing You have no choice, with the times we live in, sadly they don't ask nicely, they are not alone and waiting their turn, I've done martial arts since I was 9 I'm now 70, I thought fighting was behind me. The last time I used it was to save a Kid from getting his neck broken, they're dumb strong and don't care. Since COVID, I've been attacked 4 times, it used to be a nice retirement and family area, then the Homeless encampments were moved in, and the violence started. I know how to use my Oak walking stick which I legitimately need, but I'm not messing about, I know where and how to strike and it will be suddenly from rest to a vital area, and back onto the next. I have and do practice, but nobody without the Knowledge and meanness should attempt this stuff unless absolutely necessary, then do all the harm you can as fast as you can.

It would have to be a pretty incompetent assailant to be seen off with these moves (all of which are on strong areas of the assailant's body), after the 1st strike, which is often the most tentative from good people, it would be comparatively easy for an aggressive assailant to step forward angered & grab the stick, then yr into a wrestle with someone stronger & probably younger who will win, get the stick off you, & then they have a ready made weapon to use against you.

Flailing with a cane will never produce enough striking force to do any damage, or even distract, an attacker. Any two handed thrust should be practiced with moving in and /or back while thrusting with sliding motion and retracting the cane back as quickly or quicker than you initial thrust while moving away from attacker, the one shown seems to easy to grab and reverse. The cane MUST penetrate vulnerable targets, not just general areas. Why not use it with Kenjutsu bojutsu, jojutsu, and hanbojutsu movements and techniques?

Pardon me for interloping but the KZread algorithm seems to be orienting me toward anything to do with canes, seniors and self defence at the moment. My first criticism is that attack and defence take place on the street, in the shopping mall, not in the dojo or gymnasium, you are not going to be able to warm up before you take action against a mugger. Never mind that many folk use a crutch or a walker of some sort. I was robbed a few years ago in a deception robbery, all I was able to do was wave my cane at the thief as he ran off far too fast, fortunately a bystander took up the chase cos I was yelling blue murder at the thief and I got my stuff back.

This is such a TERRIBLE idea. I hope no elderly people will try this in a real conflict situation. There is a reason elderly people use a cane. Its because they are unstable and weak on the legs. To encourage elderly people to give up the support of their cane, start and involve in a physical confrontation. OMG. The biggest risk will be the elderly people will FALL ON THE GROUND and break a bone or likely hit their head on the pavement. For seniors FALLING and HITTING their head is a SERIOUS problem. IVANKA TRUMP did fall to her death. PLEASE dear seniors, your best defense is to stay calm, or stay away from bad neighborhoods, carry two wallets (one wallet with little cash, for would-be robbers.) Or, in America, carry a gun. Use your brain, NOT your cane. (hey that rhymes, how cool is that, if it rhymes it must be true.) For the rest, i love the video, its great, best video i ever saw. Keep up the good work.

As you see from my previous comments I was very cynical, but I managed the other day to defend myself against a HEMA guy armed with a short practice sword, and had to apologise for hurting him because I am not sufficiently skilled to pull my strikes and struck his wrist rather hard. Being as I have a forearm crutch it is harder to take that away from me and by the time you struggle I can be close in. It seems where it is very effective is denying an oppenent the ability to close in on you, you don't have to be that accurate to hit something. Of course sparring is not a real street fight, but then again my opponent knew what he was doing and I honestly did not expect to win the bout.

I am also currently undergoing chemo, so a cane is all I can muster the strength to use. Y’all are full of misinformation, just because we have reached an age classified as a senior, doesn’t mean we’re all old and feeble! Some of us simply have a bad limb from running through jungles, urban war or chasing these woke thieves! All I want is an advantage while waiting for VA etc to replace / repair the parts we wore out working for them! So the next time you look at a senior with a cane or limp, think of how they got to that point

Telling old feeble people to fight back is telling them to ensure they get hurt or worse. Their attacker(s) more than likely will b younger, more agile and stronger. The best advice to old ppl is to tell them NEVER to go out alone, late at night and to give up their valuables rather than risk serious injury or worse.

I have a lot of problems, with your technique. One it opens up to a lot of counter strikes, too you never going to be able to strike a gun out of anyone's hand if you miss, you're going to get shot injured or die. Why don't try another tactic, low cat stance, hands in the sword position are open hand position, to protect yourself. Three why not use the cane , in the same way you would practice stick fighting, or either a Bo staff tactic, when you did the overhead block with your cane this is where your technique is off when you cover your head when you cane it opens up in offense attack for the aggressor, what do I mean by this will think about it for a moment? This is how it opens up an attack when the king's over your head I can punch your face I can punch your body if I have a gun I can just go ahead and shoot you, or not I can punch you in the throat I can cut your throat I can cut your arms I can cut your chest you don't going to have time to react, rethink your tactics, sorry to say but it's going to be hard for you to admit but they're not necessarily right. Think about what I'm saying here. Think about it? Trump Bruce Lee's book on chi-Cunew do tactics, his nunchuck tactics in his stick fighting tactics. Try that out for size.

Yes all the techniques in the world will fall down in a street fight where it will all end in grappling if you have not been rendered senseless first. Even in Blighty there are an increasing number of gun crimes, but on the whole it is knife crime that is the worst. Fortunately most of it is youth against youth, and gangs settling scores. If however somebody is threatening you with a knife they have already lost the first move as they have not demonstrated that they are willing to use it cos if they were you would already be bleeding. Cane on it's own is not enough other than as a deterrent in the "do you feel lucky punk" sense, you need to have something up your sleeve with your free arm. A long time ago before I was what you might call a "senior" I was already using a cane for mobility, but I had a few sparring sessions with younger folk from the martial arts clubs at my Uni. I essentially challenged them to disarm me. In most cases I could land a first strike with the cane, but if they were nimble they could grab it and render it of no further use. My ace in such moves was to use my other hand to strike them in the back, asking them what would they have done if that were a knife. To the less experienced this was a lesson, the more experienced knew this would be a possibility and confessed that they would not use those moves in a real situation. Sticks of any sort though are good weapons, in my youth I got beaten up by a gang of bikers armed with pool cues when I had the temerity to insist that they deceased from kicking the crap out of a young man they had on the floor, lesson learned, you ain't Bruce Lee and taking on multiple opponents especially if they are armed is not like in the movies. Most fun I ever had was going to a HEMA club to try out a few Fiori de Liberi moves. My goodness that was an experience allowing people to take a swing at you with Federschwerts and you wearing no protection, again though it was about strike and counter strike.

Nonsense, there's good stuff in this, but you need a dam lot of aggression and set purpose if you're going to use any of this. Use an oak or Hickory 1-inch plus bone breaker.
