Candlelight Carol
This piece was written in response to a commission from the Church of the Assumption, Pittsburgh, in 1984. Originally for organ, the accompaniment was later scored by the composer for flute, oboe, harp and strings.
LYRICS:
How do you capture the wind on the water?
How do you count all the stars in the sky?
How can you measure the love of a mother,
Or how can you write down a baby’s first cry?
Candlelight, angel light, firelight and starglow
Shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn.
Gloria, gloria in excelsis Deo!
Angels are singing; the Christ child is born.
Shepherds and wise men will kneel and adore him,
Seraphim round him their vigil will keep;
Nations proclaim him their Lord and their Saviour,
But Mary will hold him and sing him to sleep.
Find him at Bethlehem laid in a manger:
Christ our Redeemer asleep in the hay.
Godhead incarnate and hope of salvation:
A child with his mother that first Christmas Day.
(Words and music: John Rutter)
The John Rutter Christmas Album
This album gathers together most of the carols composed by John Rutter over the years, plus a sprinkling of Rutter arrangements of traditional carols, grouped to form a programme which narrates, reflects upon, and celebrates the Christmas story.
John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1983) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.

British Choral music is a phenomenon, in itself, in that there is such an ongoing cache of young, strong Youth voices to sing the soprano and alto parts. In this piece by John Rutter, he uses the beauty of treble voices to a high degree. Brings tears to one's eyes ... the pure, perfect pitch, and God-given gift of outstanding tone. Superb.

I agree with what you say, but The Cambridge Singers are all adults. However the sopranos produce a very pure sound which can easily be mistaken for trebles.

It's the British college chapel system. They train them well, and consistently. We in the US have nothing like it - with the exception of St Thomas Church, NYC and a couple of other churches. It's a pity.

This is such a special song to me and my family. Like Mary Murphy commented below, it moves me to tears. This song has become a Christmas tradition in my family. My sisters and I, along with several cousins, attended the same high school (Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona) where this song has been sung by all choirs every year for the past few decades. We loved it so much that we carried on the tradition in our own family where we sing it together, sisters and cousins, every Christmas Eve. It is the highlight of the night (well, besides Santa's visit).

This was commissioned by my childhood parish, The Church of the Assumption, Pittsburgh, PA. Unfortunately I was never allowed to sing in the church growing up, it was a boys and men choir only back then. But this piece became a regular at my new parish after moving away from PA. It always brought a tear to read the dedication to the church of the Assumption every time had the opportunity to sing it.

First time I heard this was while performing with the Mira Costa College Symphony Orchestra. We only had one rehearsal with the choir before the concert proper, and there was no bassoon part, either, so I was just listening to the strings in front of me and the choir directly behind me; I was totally unprepared. As an aside, it was an interesting experience to play under a choir director. We didn't speak *quite* the same language. I remember that we also played the theme from Home Alone, and the director kept telling the orchestra that we needed "more syrup". Never did fully understand what she meant by that.

Whadda twit! There's always at least one. You were so busy writing your pissy little comment about "English accents" that it probably escaped your attention that John Rutter, the Brit who composed this beautiful carol, also conducted the orchestra and the Cambridge Singers, a choir that he founded, in this performance. Geeeeez.... Wonder what would have been your preferred accent... Brooklyn or Boston gutteral?
