Candace Parker's historic dunk deserves a deep rewind | 2006 NCAA Tournament

Спорт

It's the 2006 Women's NCAA Tournament, and Candace Parker is dribbling toward the basket with a head of steam. It ... kind of looks like she's about to dunk. What if she does?
Well, this is where it's worth reflecting on some history, both long- and short-term. Broadly speaking, dunking isn't a big deal. In the past, dunking has been controversial and even forbidden, but these days, it's a common part of the game. Efficient, exciting, and celebrated.
What about for women? That history is a bit more complex. It starts with gifted female athletes being driven away from the game of basketball, and it continues with complex and sometimes patronizing critiques of women bold enough to dunk.
Parker hopes to make dunking as ordinary for the women's game as it is for her, but that's in the future. For now, we have to understand the complex past of this basketball skill.

It's full of so much cap, and you didn't even skip a beat.😂 You realize women are allowed in the nba right. It's not called the MNBA. Women just suck to bad to make it. Wnba won't let men join strictly because they are MEN.(if they did, it would be no different from every other league and women would be able to make it)That's the definition of sexism. If you support wnba you are supporting sexism. Is sexism inherently evil?

    See, the thing about Candace was that she was hugely popular in Knoxville and still is. I was a kid at the time the Lady Vols won back to back nattys and they were just as respected as Fulmer's football team was. Some may find that unlikely, but having a legend like Pat Summitt at the helm makes it happen.

    I think women's basketball's desire to prove they "could do what the men do" inadvertently led to how professional women's basketball is suffering financially. Dunking is still a rare feat in women's games and the games suffer from lack of entertainment at times. As a man I don't believe I'll ever understand the frustration some of these women must have felt, but I think the rim should be lowered to increase interest and revenue for the sport. Women dunking on 9 foot hoops with smaller balls could be equivalent to men currently dunking on 10. It doesn't matter that the women "can't do what the men do" because their bodies are different. But the best female bball players in the world deserve to be entertaining and make more money

    Agreed, the same happens in football, the pitch is too big for them, and the goalkeepers are too small for the dimension of the goal. This is why long passes and shots, sprints, and attemps at clearing a good shot are so dull in Women soccer. The pitch and the goals need to be smaller in proportions of their bodies so they are more intense games, more competitive and more fun to watch

  • @CardsNHorns04

    100% agree. That’s why I support the NBA taking over the WNBA. A lot of people say “the WNBA should be gone, it loses money!” While that is true, the NBA wasn’t the juggernaut it is now 25 years into its existence. That would have been 1971, which the NBA was fighting the ABA for players and attendance. Add in that women, to this day, are not considered “feminine” if they play sports. That hurts development of the game because young women see that in middle and high school and do more “girly” things to attract the boys. It’s gonna be a while before women’s professional leagues take off, and they may never be as successful as men. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist.

  • @EvilDickism

    @EvilDickism

However, to all the people hating on these women's sports Rewinders, if you weren't riveted by the Uconn/Miss State buzzer beater video I don't know what to tell you. Winning a game vs an opponent you lost by 60 the year before, is riding a 111 game winning steak, on a buzzer beater by a person who almost gave up basketball because their idol, their father, died recently? I knew the extent to which femininity was pushed, but I didn’t know it was actively trying to tear down women’s basketball and sports in general so recently. No wonder there are still men who make sandwich jokes on girls basketball videos.

    It wasn't, they're virtue signaling you dope. The fact that she won a dunk contest for being the only woman there, and that they made am entire video about this weak ass dunk/non moment tells you the industry and certain individuals did everything they could to push female empowerment. This is just a lazy, unoriginal video made to show how woke sb nation is.

    Larry Cera even if you use that dunk as an example, Candace herself mentioned how she just wants dunking to be a normality for her instead of a fascination. Think about it, if women’s basketball was as advocated for as much as femininity was on them, then we’d have greater talent and see these things more often than not because like men’s basketball, it would have examples and evolutions for generations. Women’s basketball players my age and younger are just now doing some of the things nba players have long since been doing because of that as well. When you actively deter and discourage a target group away from something like this, it takes longer for that talent and skill to develop. That’s the point that this video makes. Not just trying to please SJW’s.

    Larry Cera that’s a cap. She won cause she made her dunks everyone else missed so many it wouldn’t have made sense for them to win. She says herself the only reason she won was cause she made her dunks

    This channel is doing more to promote and make women’s basketball seem interesting than the WNBA is. They should really hire SB Nation to make mini documentaries. I could see that boosting the league’s popularity a noticeable amount. Yes, I know the video is about college hoops, but the point still stands.
