I assumed the risk of cancelling my car insurance to test out how much my insurance will go up by. I wanted to check out the process and out some valuable information regarding registration with the DMV in California.

You should have switch your insurance from “on road” to “storage”. That’s what I did. This way, you stay insured for damages, fire and theft at 1/10 of the original cost.

BeatTheBush Take note that I also put my car registration in “storage” which more or less means that I still have the ownership but not allowed to drive. I own two collection cars and don’t really need them. The money saved is around 1000$ a year for me. 99% of my transportation needs are fulfilled with my bicycle. The registration bureau is also nearby if a road trip becomes unavoidable.

Since I am a licensed insurance agent in the state of California - I can vouch for this. 1. When you cancel any insurance that requires you to register with the DMV, the insurance company is required by state laws to report that cancelation. Even if you switch companies. There's no getting around it. It's checks and balance in states with mandatory liability insurance. 2. When you cancel your insurance and there's a lien on the home/auto/boat/motorcycle/etc... we also inform your bank/finance company. Your bank/finance company can choose to give you x number of days to get new coverage.... or they just "force insurance" on you. This is never the best situation for anyone consumer, as forced insurance only protects the bank/lien holder. 3. If you are trying to "save" on auto/home/boat / etc insurance...just raise your deductibles higher. People with higher deductibles always get better rates...without sacrificing coverage and options. The lower the deductible, the higher premium. How often are you planning to use your insurance? 4. If you register the vehicle/boat/scooter/etc...as "non-operative" you don't need insurance. That's how you really avoid the DMV piercing eyes. Earl

You shouldn't even have to pay anything for it imo if you have never had any accidents or speeding/traffic offenses. Had a driver's license here in oregon since I was 17 years old. I never had any tickets or accidents. I have been pulled over a couple times in the past, once for a tinted license plate cover and the other time for an out brake light. When I lived in Rhode Island my insurance premium with progressive for my used Nissan Quest was $37 / month. Then I moved to Florida and when I got my registration switched it was $129/ month. At the time I was 55 years old and never had an accident, had a perfect driving record and drove an average of less than 2000 miles per year living close to work in both cases. My income dropped dramatically and for the first time in my life I was late with a payment on my insurance. I was 6 days late. When I went to pay I discovered they had A) canceled my insurance for "non payment" and B) informed me that to get reinstated I would have to agree to pay $189 a month. My annual bill was now more than my vehicle was worth and I had a stripped down plan with a $1500 deductible also exceeding the value of my vehicle. In Florida if your insurance is canceled you have 30 days to turn in your plates and cancel your registration or they suspend your license. So I needed the car and agreed to pay. But then I lost my new job because the business was bought out by someone who intended to shut it down to eliminate their competition. Thus making it impossible to pay on time. I called them and said I would be a few days late with my payment due to a job loss. They told me that if I was late my rate would go up to $269 a month. I didn't have the money and $269 was more than I could pay so I canceled my insurance and sold the car, canceled the registration and turned in the plates. I then got a bill for the balance of the payments (six month plan) and at a new rate of $342 a month x the 5 months balance coming to $1710. Two years later I got a much better job that paid a lot more. I researched and just to see what my insurance would be I applied for insurance with them again using my old car's vin number just to get a quote and the quote was $473 a month. I called the company to find out why so much and they said it was due to my canceling my insurance. I told them I had sold the car and they said I should have stayed with them for my new vehicle. I explained that I didn't have a vehicle and had not for two years and they informed me that was a big mistake and then they informed me that I could not be their customer because I had racked up too many "points" whatever that means. So I called around and all the other insurance companies informed me that the reason they also had to charge me so much was due to the "points" I racked up with progressive. I don't know what the "points" are for since I have a perfect driving record. To my knowledge "points" are for moving violations which I have never had in the now 45 years I have been driving. I think these kind of policies are why A) I am the only person on my street with a driver's license and B) there are no car owners on my street. I am a safe driver so I should get good rates but the policy is if you don't pay on time your rate almost doubles and if you cancel you are penalized. My most recent quote was for $712 a month. Here in Florida the longer you go after canceling your insurance the higher your potential rates skyrocket to. I asked what happens if I got 10 years without owning a car they told me my rate would be in the five figures but didn't give me details. So I rent vehicles periodically as needed and buy the one day insurance for $10 which has a $500 deductible and I use a 49cc motor scooter which does not need insurance. When I spoke to our state rep about this they told me that car ownership was reserved for wealthy people and tourists. They didn't word it that way of course. They used politician rhetoric but it amounted to the same. obviously I'm not wealthy people. The highest rate I ever paid in Rhode island was $59 a month and I had two vehicles.

When you take insurance off a vehicle, you're supposed to put the vehicle as Non Operation(can be done via phone or electronic) with the DMV if you just plan to keep it and not sell or junk it. Otherwise the DMV fines you. You won't have any sort of fees if you reinstate the vehicle months later if you are still in the same registration period.

@@morthimFrom when you replied to me, DMV's are open in California mate. They've been opened for 2 weeks now and ongoing. Though prior to that, many things could be done via the website. I had dropped off a car at Pick N Pull a month ago, was able to do the release via the website without any trouble, though a lot more reading than I'd have liked😅. As for the Bicycles, If it's not motorized and you reach 25+ mph via human power, you're fine. Now if it's an Electric or gas Skateboard, ATV, Dirtbike, etc that can go 25+ MPH from the manufacturer, Those are generally listed and sold as "For use on private property or not on public roads" when sold in public retail stores. If it's online, well the responsibility of knowing these things in advanced falls on the buyer as not all states have those mandates(ie: Indiana - all that shit's legal for use any time, anywhere and no helmets required, at least that's how it was when I was living there in 2001 - 2007.) Back to the topic of the motorized 25+mph, That also means no public side walks either, but privately owned lots and roads are fine given you are the owner of said lot. For example a private owned roads would either be property you own or if you live in an HOA residence and the HOA allows use of those vehicles on their lot. the police can't do anything to you while on the HOA's grounds. However if you leave their lot, the law can get after you. Also if you're wondering about Bicycles with motors on them, generally most motors are sold with a label saying Private property or Not for Public roads. Naturally if you do the old school stuff of taking a lawn mower/weed wacker motor and strapping that onto a bicycle, well it should be obvious that if a cop happens to see you and they aren't having a great week, you're going to get it taken from you if you can't outrun them and you'll more than likely be detained and fined for operating a vehicle that is prohibited on public roads. A License won't do you any good for that vehicle because it can't be registered or insured anyway.

With every company I’ve used so far in the US you can also do “storage insurance” which is below liability. It protects from fire/flood/theft but you have no liability coverage to be on the road. Works great when you have a small collection of cars and if you want to reinstate one, it only takes around 24h. Thing is some companies (👀 geico) want you to keep at least one vehicle on liability. Personally I’ve seen ranges of $70-100+ drop to under $20 utilizing storage insurance.

Some states (NY and MA) require you cancel your license plates BEFORE you cancel your insurance. New York in particular will suspend your license and impose a per day fine for every day you had no insurance. And yes, the insurance company will notify the DMV as soon as you cancel. Sometimes, there's an option to put a vehicle on storage coverage (great for motorcycles not used in the winter). They strip off all the coverage except what's called Comprehensive to cover if it's vandalized or stolen. You're required not to use the vehicle for at least thirty days, but you don't have to get a new insurance policy. You just update the coverage when you start driving it again.

This is an interesting topic, i'm glad you've made a video on it. The best part will be when you get your car insurance activated. A year ago i called USAA to let them know i would be selling my car and i would no longer need car insurance. The agent advised me i should get a non-driver insurance policy. I asked why i would want to pay for car insurance when i don't own a car. She responded that if I were ever to drive someone else's car and got in an accident then i would be covered. To that i asked, well, shouldn't the other guy have car insurance or at least the owner of the car i would be driving? To which she replied, yes, but just in case they didn't have insurance i would be covered. I told her it was such an unprobeable event that i was unwilling to pay a monthly fee for. Her next tactic was to warn me that when i did get a car in the future my premiums would be higher. I asked why. She said because there would have been a gap in my coverage. Which i agreed with her, but only because i didn't own a car during the noncoverage period. Not wanting to get into an argument with me, she said it was a common practice in the industry since insurance companies, by law, are not allowed to ask you about periods of noncoverage. Making sure i understood her correctly i asked if i could repeat what she had just said: You're telling me car insurance companies are not allowed to ask if i did not own a car during the period i didn't pay for car insurance, but they ARE allowed to charge me more!? Her response, "Yes".

(California) About 5 years ago a friend couldn't pay his insurance and found out that DMV had cancelled his registration. The reinstatement fee was more than the non-op fee ($10). I needed to park a vehicle and called DMV about cancelling the insurance after I parked it and the clerk was surprised there was no provision in her system for doing that. About a week later I got a letter from Sacramento discribing the process that was now in the system. You pay the non-op fee first, then you cancel the insurance. My vehicle was parked for several years after that and I received notices as to how much it would cost to reregister. There were no fines, only smog and insurance requirements. I don't know what would happen if one tried to renew same year prior to the normal expiration of the tags. I don't know if DMV would want payment of full registration again halfway into the current year if the vehicle was non-op'd as opposed to "suspended".

California allows drivers to make $35,000 deposit and forego insurance. Of course, this is risky because state will use that money to compensate in case of accident . However, if you feel confident about your driving, by saving annual insurance premium (in your case about $1200), your return is 3.4% per year in insurance premium savings.

Former Licensed Insurance Rep here for NY, when you cancel auto insurance and a couple years down the line you try to get insurance again. That insurance history doesn't travel with you, so you will get a higher rate when you get insurance again. Your "Insurance score" plays a big part in your premium. The lower your credit, the higher risk rating you will have. Also let's say you buy a newer vehicle than your old 2004 Toyota, you would think your insurance would go down because it's safer, has more features etc. However, since you have all those nice little features your insurance will most likely go up since it costs more to repair and replace in the case of an accident. If your putting your vehicle in storage etc, call your insurance company instead of cancelling coverage. You would be pissed if your car got crushed by a tree or fire.
