CANADIAN HOGWATCH!!

A small fraction of truckers in Canada are doing what they call the Freedom Convoy, protesting the vaccine mandate for truckers crossing the US border. Almost 90% of Canadian truckers are vaccinated, but those who are not, are giving us this hogwatch

    Conservative provinces literally created laws to make blocking roads/trains be a $25,000 fine in response to Indigenous people doing it over their land sovereignty being violated. Meanwhile, those exact same conservative politicians who passed those laws are loudly praising the white nationalist flu trux klan and their blocking of roadways to protest public health/science.

    I live in Ottawa, the confederate flag shown is right beside my old job. The whole thing is ridiculous. Local police is in cahoots with them, people of colour downtown are scared to leave their houses since there have been confederate & nazi flags in the protest. Also they delusionally believe there are 50K truckers and a million people protesting but it has not even been anywhere near a quarter of that lol. They stole food from a local homeless shelter, harassed workers at the downtown mall, pissed on an unmarked soldier's grave & attacked journalists. Every Canadian that has a superiority complex to Americans needs to reevaluate.

We come across as “better” because our legislation is slightly less bigoted. Places where provincial leaders are conservative are breeding grounds for this behaviour because if your premiere is doing the bare minimum against COVID and is low key on your side…why would you comply. This convoy for "freedom" is so disheartening to see. My friends, family, and neighbours went from being cohesive and strong in the fight against Covid-19, to being divided once this talk of the convoy began. For the most part, people got vaxxed, got boosted, quarantined, and followed the laws to a tee without complaint. I see why people are frustrated, we all want the world to go back to normal already. I just cant help but feel like us healthcare workers are still fighting the good fight against this virus and we lost everyone in our corner. People are saying omicron is milder, which is true in some cases. However, I've got two friends who are absolutely being kicked in the ass by covid right now - both under 30 and boosted. BC just opened and then closed gyms to vaccinated people. Why? like do we believe in the vaccine or not?! The lack of discussion is disgusting. Vaccines are based on science but some of these policies are pure guess work. We are one of the most vaccinated countries in the world. You'd think this would loosen restrictions not tighten them.

    As a Canadian I would like to express my most sincere apologies. This is extremely embarrassing and I am shocked at the amount of people supporting this nonsense. While we often portray ourselves as being very open minded and super nice to everyone we unfortunately have an extremely long way to go. In fact I fear we might be going in the wrong direction in the past few years. For example, Maxime Bernier an ex conservative founded a populist far right party (He also doxed some reporters and had his twitter suspended for 12 hours ) in 2019 and he only got 1,94% of the vote. Now in the 2021 elections he went from less than 2% to 4,94% and while he didn't win any seats if that trend continues he is bound to at some point. Even in Quebec a place where we didn't have a right wing party (We had a center right at some point but it stopped existing and was then reformed as a more centrist party) for several decades. However recently a new conservative party has emerged (Not the lets keep a balance budget type of conservative) but one whose leader wrote a book called "the last gay" and had a right wing tv radio for a while and they have been polling at 6-11% recently which is considerable for a party that barely got anything last election. We also have our own far right group (Some of whom have guns but not as much as the american ones) so its definetly not all sunshine and rainbows. The cities are very progressive and you can definetly avoid most of these people (Anti maskers are the ones you are most likely if you stick to cities) and the country is in no danger of being overtaken for the moment but I could see things becoming more serious in the next decade so if you were looking for somewhere to escape America I would recommend that you look to Europe or Australia instead.

Why isn't the media covering it? Because it's only a couple hundred - couple thousand vehicles in this supposed nationwide event. 2years ago, my small rural community organized an impromptu birthday parade for the cerebral palsy next door neighbor who had been sick all winter and looked to not live to another birthday. Canadian here. Wanted to give context on a few things from a guy who's well-versed in Canadian politics. 1) A lot of attention is being paid to how these hogs urinated on the National War Memorial, and desecrated the statue of Terry Fox, (Canadian folk hero) the thing I found most appaling, and I think isn't getting enough attention, is how they also basically robbed a soup kitchen for the homeless. (Beat up a homeless person in the shelter, and harassed the staff, demanding meals that were meant for the needy) because restaurants wouldn't serve them. 2) Canada's Conservative Party has been sort of flirting with this thing, but not quite openly endorsing them. Erin O'Toole, the Leader of the Opposition, announced he was going to meet with them and hear them out, we haven't heard the follow-through on that. They're in this weird tap-dance where some Tory politicians are applauding the convoy, O'Toole still claims to be pro-vaccine while he's agreeing to meet with them, and Conservative Premiers (equivalent to Governors) are still imposing vaccine mandates in their provinces at the same time as their own caucus members are rubbing elbows with anti-vaxxers. Canada's Conservatives tend to be a tad more moderate than American Conservatives, but there's also a smaller and more fringe party for full-blown hogs, the People's Party, and they've endorsed the convoy outright. 3) On that video of the guy making a scene at a politician's office, the politician in question was Adrien Sala, a New Democratic Party MLA (American translation: Progressive state legislator, same party as Jagmeet Singh) from my home city of Winnipeg. I've met Adrien. He's a good guy, and his office staff don't deserve to deal with that shit. I saw him the next day, and he seemed to be in good spirits. He's not one to be intimidated. I should add that it also seems a little bit redundant to be harassing his office even from their POV, because the New Democrats are the minority party in the Manitoba Legislature. They're pro-vaccine-mandate, but the current pandemic policies in the province weren't made by them, they were made by the Conservative Premier. 4) Which brings me to a fourth point, the COVID restrictions and vaccine mandate policies are mostly set by the provincial governments. The federal government recently expanded the vaccine mandate on international travel to also include truckers crossing the Canada/U.S. border, but a lot of these hogs are demanding that the Prime Minister remove ALL vaccine mandates, which is dumb because that's not even his authority. It's kind of strange to think about, because the Conservative Party are fanning the flames of anti-vax hysteria, but they're also the ones responsible for most of the vaccine mandates, since those are set by the provinces, and Conservatives control 8/10 provincial legislatures.

I think it started as a movement by truckers but ultimately ended with a bunch of fringe people leading it. I also agree that this looks worse than it is. @just one more vaccine I promise You might have a real argument if not for the fact that vaccines are demonstrably efficacious, therefore: not being vaccinated without a genuine reason (exemption, complications, etc) really is part of the problem. Everyone's privileges are removed in lockdowns. I think the benefit of vaccination, if you can, outweighs the costs and so removing certain privileges because you're unvaccinated is valid. I think there are probably better ways or trying to get people who are still sceptical of the vaccine vaccinated, but those methods are much more difficult. Quite silly to compare world domination to the removal of certain privileges because you refuse a proven vaccine...

  • @billmagundie6866

    @just one more vaccine I promise Vaccines are not designed to stop spread. They are designed to reduce the likelihood of spreading and lower the likelihood of serious illness or death. Vaccines are efficacious at both slowing the spread of the disease & reducing the likelihood of long-term hospitalisation & death. It may be possible to eradicate such a disease, the same way smallpox was also eradicated via vaccines. But if Omicron becomes the dominant strain it may not be necessary to fully eradicate the disease (the same way we haven't fully eradicated the flu or common cold). I'm not really sure what horizontal 8 means.

  • @billmagundie6866

    @billmagundie6866

     @just one more vaccine I promise Aside from the fact that 'just living healthy' will not prevent you from getting sick - remember that the majority of covid deaths & hospitalisations are older people. The primary reason why there are vaccine mandates and not sport mandates are because vaccines are a merit good, which means that they produce a positive externality (in the case of vaccines they produce multiple) : Vaccines can provide herd immunity - which is important for those unable to be vaccinated and they reduce the likelihood that others will get infected. Second-hand smoke death is an example of a negative externality. The difference in action from governments on negative externalities from demerit goods & positive externalities from merit goods is that demerit goods require discouragement (typically via Pigouvian taxation, reform or education) & merit goods require subsidies into the firms that provide them (if any firm chooses to provide them in the first place). This is because firms are unable to charge individuals for that positive externality that the merit good provides, and hence a subsidy is required to make up for that loss. This is distinct to a demerit good, in which the social cost of negative externality that is handed over to the 3rd party ( second-hand smoke inhalers in this case ) and hence the producer of that good is not paying the social cost of that demerit good. Governments do actually attempt to control demerit goods to an extent. Complete prohibition (like the American prohibition) or too great taxation (like Alcohol taxation in the UK - although the effects aren't as extreme as the prohibition) will force these activities into the black market (because the substances are addictive and the economic incentive to produce demerit goods is greater than a regular good) - which makes them even harder to track & you cannot receive tax income from them. So I would argue that second-hand smoking is not ignored, it is just that demerit goods are much more difficult to limit than merit goods are to produce & increase consumption of. Also the primary burden of smoking is on the first-party not the second-hand, hence it is likely that governments view smoking as a smoker problem, not a 'second-party smoker' problem. Furthermore, I do not think that second-hand smoking (or even first hand smoking) are as seriously detrimental to the economy as wide spread covid infection would be (you can still work fine as a heavy smoker, not the case with Covid). Hence the government treats it more seriously than issues like smoking.
