I know this from my own mother being the same way, she has had horrible bouts of mental illness and sometimes we worry for my dad, but thankfully he genuinely loves her for who she is and not just despite her struggles.

Heartbreaking is being too polite. I know we're Canadian, but sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade. That was ungrateful and immature. I, too, have terrible anxiety. I would NEVER blame someone else for my failings because I'm an adult and I own my issues. There are days I can barely get out the door, but I'm not saying that's someone else's fault. She's too old to be acting like a toddler. Oh the big meanie yelled at you? Well, yes honey, he did. He's trying to get you to come out of your safety bubble because that's no way to live and softly, softly wasn't working. YOU asked for the help. Everyone involved had only the best intentions for her and she spit in their faces. It's disgraceful behaviour, and trying to excuse it with her mental issues is a cop-out, absolving her of responsibility. It's selfish, and she's more than capable of recognizing that. She just refuses to. She's taking the easy way out which shows, deep down, she doesn't want to get better and SHE was the one wasting everyone's time.

It is heartbreaking, but people experience anxiety in a number of ways. What you might not do, is what others might do. Anecdotal examples of what you would never do, just makes you sound like you don't know what you are talking about.

It sounds odd, but she's afraid of stepping out of the fear that she has gotten comfortable with. She hates it, but it's familiar to her now and she can't imagine how life would be again without that crippling fear. It's like being hooked on a drug. The driving lessons were good and she did succeed with many of the tests, but for her I think the lessons were too fast, too much pressure too soon. She has a severe psychological problem. She's been this way for years. It can't be sorted out in a few weeks. She is struggling inside and she needs a lot of slow patient help. Some people just never get back to being who they were before a trauma happened. I think deep inside, Karlene is angry with herself.

Also this behavior is not always present, so you can actually have a really good time (until they "flip" again)

Mélanie in the last series was the same, though with her it was a pattern, of justifying her position of palming all of the driving responsibilities on the charity of others even when it amounted to basically giving up their weekends and workdays to deal with her kids' problems, with the "can't afford the training" card, then refusing to use the free lessons they paid for for her. Karlene had been looking like she was going to be a success story like Brad, Diane, Tab or Travis (hell, you can even count Jillian if her reappearance as a nominator on S13 is anything to go by), and even after her husband acceded to her wishes and the team let her have precisely what she requested, she went the Mélanie way. The retreat into her cocoon. I'm surprised they didn't have more of her talking with Shyamala in the season, because that was the most telling thing with Mélanie, when near the end of the season she got asked if she really wanted the responsibility of doing the driving herself, and she said the right things... while involuntarily shaking her head. The thing is, as with Karlene a lot of it is anxiety-based, it could well be that she saw that independence that she'd striven for, that had been the whole reason for her being there, as a precipice once she actually got there, and was simply too afraid to make that final step, but if that was the case, it's not like she couldn't have said that. At the end of the day, people have stopped driving following their appearances on CWD, and Karlene isn't a threat to people by insisting on keeping driving like Donna or Dale. And as I think Cam said about Darris in an earlier episode, they've now reached the point where they've done all they can for Karlene - the next step has to come from her. She claimed she wanted to make that step and that would justify her NOT becoming independent as a driver - but when that was actually on the cards it didn't seem so appealing anymore.

I hoped she'd graduate seeing how far she'd come, but on seeing her breakdown I think she's just like the death wish driver who came on the show just so his mum would pay for his $7'500 per year insurance. She seems to share aspects of that manipulative personality only in this case it is to keep a noose around her husband's neck. From the start her behaviour seemed familiar to me. Without going into too much detail, I have a family member who seems to be using an unfortunate circumstance to play on all of us to hand off responsibility through an excessive dependance on us. I wanted to dismiss it as I felt genuinely bad for her as I thought it could all have been a result of her incident so many years ago, but her sudden anger and carelessness after being told she was ready to graduate, i.e. become an independent driver, lost her that from me, as well as confirm what was suspected about my own family member.

Completely clueless behind the wheel and have no idea in how to control their vehicles or the rules of the road. 2. Emotionally and/or mentally unstable behind the wheel and often in regular life. 3. Both Seriously women should be given an extra test to see if they're mentally and emotionally stable enough to drive before they're given a license and in general they should be tested more tougher to see if they understand the rules of the road. Just plain too many of them are UTTER MORONS like Alexis and Brittany on the roads these days.

I've been observing Karlene this season and have progressively become more concerned for not only her immediate mental stability but how it may quickly degrade in the future. My aunt who is about the same age was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and exhibited many of the same behaviors as Karlene earlier in the disease's progression, i.e. having trouble forming cohesive and specific sentences, frequent stuttering, and getting irrationally angry with an inability to think reasonably about the situation, even long after it had passed. Just two years later my aunt is now completely unable to communicate, process information, or take care of herself in any way. I hope Karlene's similar behavior is simply due to her anxiety and ADHD rather than a sign of things to come.

But unlike her, Karlene appears to be some sort of elderly Tumblrette. ... But Karlene having a sort of dopy smile and way of acting does point to a mental issue.

Karlene doesn't have Alzheimer's. She has some incredibly severe and significant psychological issues. Yes, Alzheimer's patients often develop psychological issues, but plenty of older people can be messed up without having dementia. She has a specific trauma that messed her the fuck up unfortunately. I wonder if she experienced a traumatic brain injury in her ordeal, as that can often exacerbate any mental illness.

Karlene does not belong anywhere near the drivers' seat of a vehicle. She is mentally unstable and needs professional help. I'm sorry, but having her take an onramp 3 times successfully means absolutely nothing given her past behavior. She is a danger to everyone on the road, and quite frankly I don't see that changing. That change in Karlene's attitude towards what the show teached her is unbelievable and so sad at the same time. Just like Andrew, I was hoping a lot from her and she really did learn from CWD (I could just say that Karlene was my favorite bad driver this season). Everytime she would have a mental breakdown after a challenge I would feel sad for her, but when she smiled driving on the highway this episode I was just so happy to see her overcome her fears of speed and traffic ! That letter she wrote them at the end is trully heartbreaking and I just hope that she is doing better now and realises she CAN drive all alone, whether on the freeway or on the streets of Calgary (I think it is Calgary). The point of rehab with Karlene was not to make her a daily highway driver but a casual normal driver.

I think Karlene did have a good time there and made good progress, for the most part. Though I think the times she thought she wasn't was just when she was having a breakdown. So perhaps when she wrote the letter to them, she was having another episode. Mind you I don't doubt that she went in for therapy after her time on the show, but I don't think it's "for" her time on the show as she claimed. She just seems to fall back on blaming others when she gets to that state of mind, like blaming her husband or Andrew for no reason. So here's hoping that she will eventually recover from whatever she has with whatever treatment works.

Its pretty much guaranteed at this point that unless Brandon regresses severely that its going to be YET ANOTHER female 'winner' of this show. CWD just shows that too many women are too dangerous to be on the roads because of their lack of driving skills and knowledge or emotional/mental instability. Having watched all the CWD seasons, you could probably count on one hand the number of male drivers that were seriously messed up in the head like so many female drivers on this show are.

@@UzumakiNaruto_ I'm kind of clueless as to what your point with making all these comments about women's driving. But like with many other misplaced issues, I think it's really about something else. And online is probably the worst place to figure that out, since you can hide behind a screen, and not really feel responsible about what you're saying. If I'm wrong about that, and you actually think woman are inherently worse drivers, and that it's such a serious problem that something drastic needs to be done, then I think you first of all need to focus on learning what 'evidence' is. Learning what statistics are, and how science works. Next up would probably be learning about consequences of the things you do, and what it really means to be responsible of power, when considering taking action toward half the world's population. But like I said, I don't really believe that's what you care about. And I guess only you or people who know you, have a chance of figuring out what you're on about. I hope you figure it out yourself some time.

0:32 That says it all... The perpetual desire to blame a disease for all your problems and actions... and failures... even your husband, who is a saint, and bought into the belief that once diagnosed, one cannot overcome the symptoms and thought patterns. Karlene CAN DRIVE... she DID... but just like any good manipulative lawyer or accuser to distract from ones own lack of effort or perpetual victim self sabotage comfort zone... she seeks to choose to blame her husband... "I KNEW YOU WERE UP TO SOMETHING" or blame Andrew for yelling at her to get it up to 60 k.... I mean if you admit you have ADHD... and are self absorbed... sometimes you need a slap in the face or someone to yell and snap you out of your box... Karlene, you are in a comfortable box. If you had to actually be held responsible for your irrational emotional lack of self control, then you would see how YOU are responsible for your own actions, not your husband, or Younghusband... and you must be great in bed or guilt trips because your husband really should leave you to drive and live by yourself UNTIL you take responsibility for your LIFE and the way you choose to speak, live, act and blame others... ADHD is a chronic condition marked by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and sometimes impulsivity. ADHD begins in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. As many as 2 out of every 3 children with ADHD continue to have symptoms as adults. Growing up means keeping up mentally with your body Karlene... Try to keep up... You should know better, and by your blame accusations, you are perfectly aware of what is going on around you, you just want to divert and distract from responsibility.
