Canada's Famous "Mad Trapper" Manhunt w/ Helena Katz - A True Crime History Podcast

Музыка

Albert Johnson is famous in Canadian crime history for leading Mounties on a sensational and deadly chase through the Yukon and Northwest Territories during the winter of 1931-32. How he managed to elude police over hundreds of kilometers in subzero temperatures through a mountainous wilderness is as much a mystery as his real identity. To this day, very little is known about the man nicknamed "The Mad Trapper".
My guest, Helena Katz, Canadian historian and author, joins me to talk about her book, "The Mad Trapper: The Incredible Tale of a Famous Canadian Manhunt". More information can be found at her website at www.katzcommunications.ca/ .

I remember reading a book about this man a couple of years ago and I couldn't believe he was real. The physical and mental strength this man had is unbelievable and from what I remember in the book is the guy only wanted to be left alone and it was other people that triggered him into action. A bit like how Rambo "Only wanted something to eat" lol originally.

Well he started trouble by moving their traps, then owing them an explaination he instead shoots because hes a psychopath. which means he was acting like a dick before all this happened so they had to get a few guys to go up there in case he started a problem. Of course, he did that too. In other words, hes to blame entirely

So, typical RCMP. Harrassing and annoying instead of serving and protecting.

I’ve always found this to be a great story. I’m not familiar with Canadian law, but it seems that there was very little basis for issuing a search warrant. Can anyone explain the reasons to me?

I have been going through my little town's newspaper on microfilm. A few months ago I read the editions containing this story in that paper here in the middle of the American Midwest.

And it all began because he allegedly pulled other people's traps up from where they had been set and hung them up on trees presumably to send a message to other trappers.

I just watched a show where they dug up his body and did a dna test, and they have no idea who the mad trapper was.

A gross display of police overreach. The information put forward indicates no reason for a warrant.

Would it not be more respectful to call this man “The Trapper” and drop the “Mad” part? He’s a legend but unless someone can come up with who he was and present his side of the story it seems defamatory - especially of a man who possessed more survival skills than most people in the world and according to the autopsy had a disability. Rest in peace Trapper.
