Canada election 2021: English-language federal leaders' debate | FULL

Canada’s federal party leaders were quickly put on their heels in the first moments of the English language debate Thursday, the last face-off before voters go to the polls in the election - and their feet were held to the fire throughout the rest of the night.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet and Green Party Leader Annamie Paul each faced questions on their leadership qualities and shortcomings from moderator Shachi Kurl at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que.
As the topics moved into climate change, Indigenous reconciliation, affordability and the COVID-19 pandemic, all five leaders defended their records and plans. But Trudeau, who is seeking a third term as prime minister, faced the harshest scrutiny.
The election will take place Sept. 20, 2021.

If you're worried about censorship: the Liberal Party tried to control KZread content with bill C-10, also they are trying to censor speech with bill C-36 by making "hate speech" illegal online. This isn't just companies censoring content anymore, this is the GOVERNMENT censoring.

Nothing about this dude is right. If the most recent election has taught me as a Canadian anything it is that: -Erin O'Toole and the Conservatives want to end free healthcare, want to send Canadian men and women to the Middle East to fight and die for other countries, wanted to end the CERB during a pandemic, and were going to declare an emergency in Alberta due to Covid, AFTER the election, to save face. -Bloque...please see above time stamps. For me, the election was worth it. It exposed many snakes in tall grass.

Hey, I'm an American watching this. This Bloc Quebec guy Blancher is awesome. He started last night saying "these laws are not discriminatory, these laws are the values of Quebec." Then he goes further and says "Quebec is recognize by a vote of 216 in Parliament on June 16 as a nation" A nation has the right to determine what it values. He is not interested in leading Canada, this man is leading his people into becoming their own nation just like George Washington or Ben Gurion and Israel. I feel he has already performed a successful launch. Did you not here the presenter lady at the beginning explain the "unusual" step the premier of Quebec took prior to the debate of outlining his support of the conservatives and listing what he wants from them? Your country has fractured. It's already happened. Why? Well, the historical issues with Canada is it doesn't have any self identity. Nobody can put their finger on what Canadian actually is.... Then it's a moving target to what ever the next new times idea... Like today your identity is covid. Today you run from your past identities like those old indian bones at those 120 year old schools. These French people... They have an identity. They know what they are. They have their own unity. This guy Blanchet is their Moses.. look at how much he has gained for Quebec at the expense of the other provences... This man has leverage. They are using it. What I heard was Quebec declared independence from Canada and the total clown show your nation has always been. That's the kind of man that gathers respect from powerful nations...

I don't like the way those debates are done :/ First, the time allocated is very short and does not enable to construct a real deep answer but only to shoot short buzz words like "i have a plan", "it's better for Canadian" etc. It's like they undermind the capacity of people to analyse a complex idea based on moral values or social/economic principles. Besides, even if it's important to ask sensitive questions to highlight the candidate weaknesses, it can't be the whole debate. They should also let time for them to present their vision, to show some data, and to speak about they own subjects. Finally, it felt like the journalist does not really respect them. They are professional and elected leaders, you shouldn't start by saying "i'll cut your mic" like they are children...

They talk about Québec as if it's the most important province, overshadowing the rest of Canada. I really start to think whether Bloc Québecois is that useful. We can see in this debate how Mr. Blanchet how useful he just is, is he the same in parlement? I wonder what would happen to parlement if Québec didn't vote in majority for BQ🤔

It's interesting listening to Mr. Trudeau speak of Otoole saying the right things but doing the opposite. Trudeau spent years speaking of feminism and supporting women... demanding the resignations of those who, no matter how long ago or how unsupported the accusations were, demanding that others step down or lose their careers for mere accusations - yet when it comes to light that he, himself (at 27) groped a woman, later apologizing using the words "I would not have been so forward", later following it up with the very patronizing "women experience it differently" line. Now this election he stood for months behind one of his candidates repeatedly accused of sexual misconduct. He spent years demanding resignations for racist or homophobic comments decades old - yet after being caught in blackface did not live up to his own stated values for others, simply saying Canadians would have to decide. He told us he was not going to raise carbon pricing above $50/ton in the last election... less than 2 years ago. He has raised it. He told us he did not pressure JWR to protect Stantec - but it turns out he did. He told us first past the post was done. It is not. He told us he was not going to call an election during a pandemic. Yet when the polls told him he would walk to victory, he did. He is currently telling us that he would not be taxing our residences. How do we believe this? He will say anything to get elected.

I found the debate moderators as well as the format used, did not serve the Canadian public well. The leaders were not given the time to properly address the questions or were they given enough time for rebuttals. CBC showed clearly they had no interest in hosting a debate and handled it poorly. The moderators were intrusive and rude. Canadians deserve much better , especially from our national, tax payer funded, organization. A good example as to how the CBC is not serving the Canada public. The other issue is why did they only hold and broadcast one English language debate, while there were two debates in French ? All three debates were held in Quebec. I am undecided ,yet I will say ,until we deal with Covid, the other issues are going to be nearly impossible to solve for anyone. The right to be exposed to all ideas is very important so people can be inspired to take part, use their brain, research and engage in conversation. I would argue that allowing regulated echo chambers to continue to exist unchallenged is extremely damaging to society. It is the responsibility of us citizens who enjoy these freedoms to preserve them by being involved, lobbying to attempt to make manipulation by big tech illegal, speaking up when we must and understanding that we don’t have all the answers, I know I sure don’t. So why would I risk not having the opportunity to have my mind changed if it helps me? Now it seems that a good portion of our kids have been given their cheat sheet for how to view the world and being positively reenforced by those who handed them that sheet. That is an example of how we become vulnerable when we allow marshalling from those who are in charge of deciding what we can see under the guise of protection. I would rather see people challenged to think, I am optimistic about people’s abilities.

In the case of the latter it is not your fault and I can understand not being able to break free from those chains.
