This video is about to get a lot of views. Recent data suggests explosions are much more likely than meteors.
Apparently, the answer is yes. They use a form of butane instead of freon in modern fridges.

The model they are showing in this video isn't using R600a. My GE has warning stickers all over the back
It seems that meteorites have become incredibly common recently then.

Just watched a video today about a lady that had a Frigidaire refrigerator explode recently. She said it was making a loud noise a few days prior and she made a warranty call. They came and said it needed a new part (fan, I think) they would have to order. Unfortunately for her, it hadn't came in yet. So, come to find out, Frigidaire has had this happen before.

The tragic Grenfell Tower Fire in UK was thought to have started from a refrigerator fire if I am remembering right. Then seeing this recent incident has got me thinking more about it and what you could do to prevent it. The video doesn't really give any advice on what to look out for.
A Frigidard explored recently, heard it on the news. The more I research, the more likely I will keep my 2006 Kenmore top freezer refrigerator.

I have more faith it will last another 10 years than a brand new one lasting 5 years. I have been having to buy refrigerators every 4 years
Umm, yes it indeed can explode. All you need is the refrigerant to slowly leak into the cavity of the refrigerator (where your food is stored) and over time it fills the cavity with explosive (refrigerant that contains butane) gas AND a spark happens....The spark likely will come from any relay within the cavity or hidden behind the internal wall panels. The contacts of relays (an electromechanical device) "bounce" causing multiple connect/disconnect cycles before finally it stops bouncing and settles either on or off as commanded by the refrigerator controls. Then, KABOOM! As an engineer myself, I can see that the only way to prevent such dangerous events involving the ignition of leaking refrigerant is to detect the leaking gas within the fridge cavity and shut the fridge down, display a fault message (or store it to memory so that a tech knows what has occurred later on) especially removing power to any device that can cause a spark.

Plus but at a higher priority: Manufacturers MUST only use Solid State relay/switches (there are about half a dozen of switches in a fridge), AND MUST seal all fan/motors (fan to evaporate the drain water, motor to run the ice cube maker, etc, etc).
@btomas225

@@SSintox ...Or just tell the "party of science" that's forcing all these "environmentally friendly" refrigerants on the rest of us to revert back to 410 or r22 or any other type that's not explosive...you know, "people friendly". Can you imagine a person opening the door on a grenade the size of a fridge?

I watch the "Maytag" KZread guy and he reckons the LESS fancy features, circuit boards an appliance has usually means it will last longer. Washer with mechancial knobs will outlast one with electronics. THink most of us seen the exploding Frigdaire articles/pics ! If Frigdaire was smart, they would get the frig to examine it and see why it blew up. Probably blame the repairman !
Part of the explosion problem is they the manufacturer have gone back to using propane as refrigerants which is flammable when comes in contact with air and ignition source most older refrigerants are oxygen robbing so not flammable but depending on size to refrigerator system and leak could be suffocating you Retired HVAC&R tech and never heard of or see explosion until recently when industry change what could be used as refrigerants

You need to understand that the definition of something being flammable is gauged on whether it occurs in the presence of oxygen. An event which we call combustion.@@akan626
Google exploding fridge and see how many hits you get. Remember, they just started to use butane as a refrigerant, so the number out there is still small. Wait 5-10 years.

Agreed, it’s going to take multiple people getting badly injured or killed before these greedy bastards will get rid of these R600a isobutane charged compressor refrigerators! 😢
Just recently, there has been a spate of refrigerators exploding, mostly from two manufacturers listed in the articles; Whirlpool and Frigidaire. And one washing machine that had a bearing shrapnel that caused an explosion that ruined the machine completely as well as the dryer beside it. With the fridges, are they putting flammable coolant that can cause explosions into to cooling system parts that are possibly made in China? Chinese quality has a dismal track record and you gotta wonder about upper management of these outfits that have a strong need to feed the greed!
my bro has a crosley gas fridge, its about 90 yrs old, never a problem. still purring along and never a warm beer.
I recently saw a news piece from a local TV News station about a brand new fridge that exploded. It made a terrible mess of the kitchen and if someone had been in the kitchen there would had been injuries.
Definitely a design flaw !
When you food really *goes off,* so will the fridge's doors, along with the kitchen window!
R290 refrigerant is unsented propane R600 ISO butane So 1 pound of either is not a good idea. Also this is used in central heating and cooling systems with 5-12 pounds When the old Freon systems could not burn or explode
So, I shouldn't use an ice pick on the coils then propane torch to melt when they ice up? Dang it! Lol...
yup this guy need to look at the news a lady's fridge exploded last week it destroyed her kitchen and cabinets

@@akan626 Yes , indeed
Just read about one just exploding.
So this is a known concern yet NOT changed in the industry?
Wait, we have a 1 in 1.6 million chance of being hit by a meteor?
Yes ours caught fire in 1964 and insurance refused to pay they said impossible.
Um refrigerators do blow up
Yes of it's uses propane as refrigerate
Its NOT the electronics. Its teh refrigerants, they are changing to R-290 (propane) and other flammables.
Should we go back to using ammonia??!
After repairing refrigeration for 43 years... here is the answer. If your refrigerator has R600A Refrigerant it can explode. Since R600A is extremely flammable. I live in the 'third world ' country where we often have no electricity. A certain lady used a knife to defrost her fridge. Resulting in a hole in the evaporator. (Ice box). She approached the fridge at night carrying a candle since the electricity was off. R 600a is odorless. As she approached the refigerator it exploded in a ball of fire. She died of severe burns 12 hours later. That answers the question about... Can your fridge explode.
Omg!!
R600a refrigerant is flammable
If it's r600 it can cause a small explosion
Sorry, we are hearing about more of these things exploding now. It isn't rare.....uncommon, maybe, not rare.
Just on the news
*Generally, you don't see that sort behavior in a major appliance.*

best comment of the year! I heard a voice say Zuelll!
A report states that woman's frig blew up, tore thru walls.
Lets raise that percentage up a little bit. Two factors that people forget: electrial voltage coming into your house is not at correct voltage. This can be enough to burn up electronics inside the fridge and could cause a fire and or explosion. Now second issue, which is quite common is an unbalanced fan. If the fan is not replaced your kitchen can explode.
All of a sudden, there are news reports of this happening all over the place with a variety of brands. So it's not the brand. Something else is going on to cause this to happen.

You are wrong (and a simpleton with over-simplistic view that blame the "government"). Governments worldwide only mandated the end of Freon in refrigerators. The choice to replace Freon with a flammable gas was done by the refrigeration appliance industry looking to save a few bucks. You can't blame the government for that change anymore than you can blame the government for soda manufactures changing to high fructose corn syrup over cane/beet sugar in their soft drinks.
Damn, I'm not keeping up, Butane? WTF ? Last I heard they were using Propane/Butane in Europe in the mid 90's, and thought WoW Cra Cra😵💫
Buyer Beware !
It happened to this lady! Refrigerator explodes, destroys kitchen and damages other parts of NC house, owner says ABC 1172.8K subscribers 7 days ago.
It's not butane, its propane (R-290), and its 99.8% pure unlike the propane for your grill witch is only 80% due to the added sent and other impurities. As these units get older explosions will become more frequent, the evaporator inside the fridge is where the most common leaks are found and also your thermostat / relay components. BooM
AND WHAT KIND OF FREON IS THAT????? IT MUST BE COMING FROM CHINA BECAUSE THE LAW IN AMERICA STATES THAT YOU CANNOT USE BUTANE AS A REFRIGERANT,!!!!!! I AM A LICENSED REFRIGERATION TECH FOR OVER 40 YEARS .
