It's weird that they are called guinea pigs, as they are neither from Guinea, nor related to pigs. But these deer-like cousins of the guinea pigs are so different from other rodents, yet extremely similar in the essential ways. They look and act like deer-pig-rabbit-rats. Yet, their evolutionary lineage is closer to the rat than any of these other animals. Convergent evolution and physical distance (the Atlantic Ocean) drove them to become so different from your average rat.

i have two guinea pigs at home, & it's interesting to see some of the similarities between my tiny cavies & their tall cousins! the cavy family is such an interesting bunch

How cute!! Imagine driving down that road and seeing a woman walking 2 giant guinea pig/dog looking things haha I would think they were aliens.

That was a very pleasant walk! It's always nice to see the animals getting to enjoy the outdoors just as much as they enjoy their indoor habitats. I am consistently amazed and impressed by how hard you all work to take such wonderful care of your animals. Just wish more folks could (and would) do the same!

The cavies are so adorable ...so glad they have a wonderful family to take care of them too:)

I have one myself. Milo is about 6 years old and he has been handled since he was a baby which is amazing. I showed him in 4-H for 4 years and won many different awards and ribbons! He loves his life here in Oregon!

And I love the birds to. I LOVE WHAT YOU DO FOR THE ANIMALS, I WOULD LOVE TO DO WHAT YOU DO .

Basic training= learning human is a treat dispenser. I love that the Cavies are able to enjoy the beauty of fall like the rest of us! Do you have to worry about cars when you walk them along the road? Or is it quiet enough to know what times of the day no one will be coming?

That's also such a pretty area to be at in general! Mountains are always spectacular.

I always love patagonian cavies! 😊❤ And I understand now that they're not domesticated animals.

They're a species I've never heard of obviously. They're like a pair of *Not A Capybaras*

great video !!! I am 14 years old and me and my friends want to rescue birds around the city but I am not ready to start a organisation. I have taken care of few dozens of birds of a couple of species but my experience is only up to birds from pet stores.... can you give me any suggestion to be a bit successful in my attempt?

I love your passion! I would recommend volunteering at already established animal facilities that rescue birds because there is always so much to do. You'll be directly helping the birds and you'll be building your skills with experience. Then, when you're ready, you'll have years of knowledge built up to really make your organization thrive! @@animalwondersmontana I thought of that idea, but due to the covid virus my city has been marked as a red zone, and thus all the rescues and shelters have to closed to public, they do not even adopt or take in new animals in this time. We have no chance of getting any physical exposure, and me and my friend are not sure whether this will work out life long. I've always had a passion for birds... Few years ago when I was growing finches (37 of them) I just thought finches were awesome, that time a nest of an Indian ringneck fell from the tree, there were 6 baby birds (fledgling) but their mum died, people in my locality thought of giving it to me hoping that it gets a good home but unfortunately I didn't get it. In a year I learnt that parrots are so unique... If I decide to rescue birds in the city ( ther are mainly pigeons, crows, ravens, mynahs and few more) what bird is the best to start, I can wait for long enough to find a bird you suggest and I am ready to help any in need

@@sarahstardust thank you Sarah for that suggestion. But unfortunately rescue services in India don't work like that. They call themselves non profit organizations yet the money given to them as donation are not being used for the purpose and the money goes directly to their pockets. And if we call them and ask for suggestions, they say us not to rescue animals ourselves but give the animal directly to them

We own 4 maras and this gave me some great training ideas! Thank you so much! Also, are there any specific harnesses you recommend? We have used a few that work well but I really love the fit of the ones you have.

We'll have to assess the situation and make those kinds of decisions depending on what the whole picture is. We've definitely seen that Chili Pepper has a much better life with a companion, so that would playa big factor in how we moved forward. But we have to keep in mind that it's not a straight forward easy thing to just get a new animal as a companion and having everything work out perfectly every time, so lots of thought and due diligence has to go into every choice that's made.

I wonder if using one leash with 2 3 foot splitters at the end would be easier. I have my dogs on a Y rig and it keeps them well controlled while still having fun.

Thanks for thinking about it! Your suggestion wouldn't work in this situation since I couldn't use slight pressure from the leash to communicate to just one of them at a time. And if one took off running the other would get yanked on and both could end up seriously hurt. I've seen the Y method work with dogs, but cavies are a very different challenge 🙂

I know they are wild animals and not pets, but do you think mara overall would be a good candidate for domestication? Hi How come you don’t use retractable leashes?

I'm curious why you don't use retractable leashes. They really help me keep the leash from tangling around my dogs' legs.

Thanks for asking! Retractable leashes may sound like a good idea for keeping the leash from drooping and being stepped over. However, they can be dangerous and counter productive when trying to teach leash etiquette. I want the cavies to stop when they feel pressure on the leash and feel free to move forward when the leash is slack. With retractable leashes they are taught to pull harder when they feel the pressure because that's how they pull the leash out of its spool, they often never feel slack since the cord spools back up. Feeling pressure on their chest from the harness because the leash is pulled tight all the time would also make a wild animal, especially a prey animal like a cavy, would make them very nervous and the walk wouldn't be enjoyable. Retractable leashes are dangerous because it's so easy for them to get stuck or malfunction. If I used them with the cavies and this happened then I have a very dangerous situation where a long thin cord is not able to be quickly wrapped up and out of harms way. On the other hand, when I use the flat 20' leash looped over my hand, if one of the cavies does get a leg tangled I can quickly drop a loop and immediately give them more slack to get untangled or bide a few seconds of time for me to call them to me or walk to them and adjust the leash. I hope that makes sense in text.

@@animalwondersmontana that makes a lot of sense, thanks! I've only ever dealt with domesticated predators, dogs and cats, so I didn't think about how a wild prey animal would feel about the pressure or occasional jams of a retractable leash.

@@SpeakShibboleth also the thin cord would be easy to bite through, lots of the animals there could probably bite through a cord of the size a retractable leash uses in seconds.

They do purr! It's one of their vocal communications and in this context qith the gentle tone and volume it means they're happy. They can also use a louder more forceful version as a way to communicate their upset or aggressive.

I need more context to be able to answer this. Are you asking if while on a walk outside another animal tried to go after one of ours? Or are you asking if wild animals have ever tried to get into one of the animal enclosures?
