Can you use a rubber band as a cassette deck belt?
Ғылым және технология
Probably not. Rubber bands are too stretchy and cause lots of warble in the audio, regardless of the size you use. And they degrade much more quickly than the correct replacement belts, so even if you find one that works OK, it won't last very long.

That's exactly what my results were when I tried replacing my walkman's belt. Glad to know it wasn't just user error on my part!
In the boombox/walkman collecting community there's a wonderful story of a collector who replaced his Walkman's drive belt with a condom when it broke on an extended holiday in the 80s. I've been awfully tempted to try this on one of mine when they need replacing; but can never quite bring myself to do it.

Sounds cheaper tbh
Rubber bands have spring effect, which is not good for tape, as it causes oscillations in drive speed. Belts are stiff and transmit the steady speed if motor to drive mechanism.
I actually did this with a Betamax player once. The belt that controls the playback function had worn out and melted, I didn't have any replacements. The rubber band held up rather well, long enough that I forgot it was there xD It finally wore out and snapped a little while later (after a few hours of playback time), and a proper replacement was issued.
The audio will sound "wavey" Rubber bands have too much elasticity
A rubber band as an emergency/temporary replacement for a broken rubber belt would only work in situations where having a constant speed is not as important so it wouldn't work in a audio or video tape machine but might work if the issue was a belt driver gear that operated say a optical disk drawer or open/closed something, or raised the volume or tuner up or down, and so forth.
Quick answer without even saying a word! Thank you!
keep up the excellent content

Very good video!
Considering we now can buy a pack of mix-sized belts for a just few dollars, thus it no longer make sense to use rubberband as a replacement anymore.

Yeah right, I can't find a set of replacement belts for my Denon for less than $30...which is how I ended up here.
Thank you for this demonstration video. I was so curious about how it turns out if you use regular rubber band. I have an old cassette player that still works. But I need to replace the belt, as it sounds weak and wobbly.
moonlight serenade, nice
Well.if you need a thick belt for say...a reel to reel player.A multiple of thing bands could work.Of course the initial turn of the motor does not pull the band straight away due to the streach so their is a light delay-then the band catches up but the inersure! In the elasticity relaxes causing the tension and release effect. This is effectively wobbleling the speed😐
pls use vocal music so we can see the actual difference but nice info
Oh that was interesting
Thanks ..now I need to find a replacement..question there is a pack of diverses belts like on ebay .or anywhere you thik this ones work??
I’m to broke to buy the 11 dollar belts for my bum box and I just put a rubber band in it and it sounds the way it did before the belt broke
What player is this the inside of? I love the flickering indicator

It's a Quickshot Studio 4: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZoyJrJelkcK_nMo.html
I've done it with an 8 track player with a little better results. Also these trap town spammers are really going at it lately. I've been blocking them and removing their comments.
Nice demo. I did just try this (used two of those transparent rubber bands) with a SONY TC-W31 Dual Cassette Deck which uses 2 identical belts. Sounded better than this test. Almost listenable, the "almost" part became unbearable after about 10 minutes. No recycling win here. Need to ante up an actual belt. Cheers
Could you please tell me what cassette you used for this?
