Can You Turn Your MIG Welder Into A TIG Welder?

Have you ever wondered if it is possible to turn a MIG welder into a TIG welder? If so, you won't want to miss this video. We visited Adam Streich at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, TN to get the answer. He demonstrates that it is possible to transform your MIG torch into a TIG torch by changing the gas to 100% argon, altering the polarity to DCEN, and creating a custom "contact collet" to hold your tungsten. While the practicality of this technique is still up for debate, it's important to stay curious as there might be a perfect application for it in the future.

You should try using a tig torch for the arc but use a mig gun to feed filler.

@@maggitmasterit works well. Especially if you crank the wire feed down to like 60 ish IPM and just pull the trigger and dab along. They also have hot wire tig which is like energizing the wire like you would with mig and still tig welding. Great suggestion for another video

Try a tig torch with a pressure switch. There are times when i use a foot pedal pressure switch for the mig, it saves the hands.

TIG is broken and you need to do some welding try connecting the MIG if you have a MIG that converts to Arc Welding you can convert it to a TIG lift start. If you want high frequency start connecting a 12 Volt DC car battery into the mix improves your start. Lincoln Welding Hand Book has some valuable information for welding.

Iv been thinking about trying this. I have a miller that can do cc or cv, any recommendations on where to start other than just playing around. My Bernard torch (with gas) can handle 300 amps and I have a few 1/16-1/8 tips. If I get to it in the next week or so I'll send you a video of my results

if the machine runs CC just use the right process for now 😅 if it only does SMAW you can still run a scratch start set up with an adapter block

Technically there is, if anyone has used either Millers or Lincoln Electrics machines that use double pulse. You can set the amount of time between the pulse and when it ramps down, these machines are used a lot in aluminum boat building.

I expected it to work to some extent, but didn't expect you to get welds nearly that good. Does pulsed MIG give more control? Does it work on aluminum too?

No. You would need AC output. Dedicated MIG welders are DC only.

if you have a mig machine just try welding aluminum with the right process. you can weld aluminum with mig (100%) argon u groove rollers and plastic liner, or spool gun. you wont be able to MIG/TIG aluminum this way

Yes easily. It’s called Constant Current mig welding. You simply flip the switch up in a 12vs feeder to CC instead of CV. It welds a little differently

Very possible are we talking GTAW or GMAW. Mig aluminum is usually done on DCEP. For Tig on DC you’d use 💯 Helium and get great penetration on DCEN but not as pretty of a bead and overkill for thin materials.

Barbarians! Get a real tig torch setup. Five years ago I modified a Lincoln 125 to use a real tig torch. Simply buy a cheap replacement whip and graft a real tig torch to it. The gas/electrode uses the same fittings, then splice the switch to a tig switch for arc and gas. Plug the wire port on the whip to prevent gas leakage. Set the aluminum gun setting to on, polarity as you say. Now you have a real scratch start tig with pre and post flow control. On low setting you can fusion weld box cutter blades. I told the Lincoln rep and he said they have a bunch of multi-process welders coming out. But for all those millions of people who already have the big box store welders, this might be useful.
