Practice more problem-solving at brilliant.org/TedEd/
--
The evil wizard MoldeVort has been trying to kill you for years, and today it looks like he’s going to succeed. But your friends are on their way, and if you can survive until they arrive, they should be able to help stop him. Can you keep MoldeVort trapped long enough for help to arrive? Dan Finkel shows how.

It annoys me sometimes how Rowling retcons her own statements. Deathly Hallows reveals that Ravenclaws have to answer a riddle to access their tower, so no Ravenclaw would have been stopped by Snape's logic puzzle. Come to think of it, the defenses around the Philosopher's Stone were all kinda bad, since three first-years were able to get past all of them.

@@Shadohime Well, Hermione says a lot, not every wizard on Earth. Obviously that's the plainfield of Ravenclaws, who perhaps would have never reached it because the other defense were too though. "Pythagoras" is definitely a clue here. At first I thought you could only choose 1, 2, 3, and 4, since any other number wouldn't be reachable. However, 5 is also an option, but if you choose it, you'll need to keep MoldeVort in a tight range. You'll need to keep him out of the center 9 squares, as well as the direct edges (A3, C1, C5, E3). You need to omit either 2 or 5, since if you choose both, 2 then 5 will kill you in just two moves. Similarly, 4 means you'll need to keep him out of the center 9 squares so he can move edge to edge. You need to pick at least one number of 4 and 5, since you can only omit one, so the center 9 squares are bad. Omitting 5 would lead to the sequence 2, 3, 4, which forces you to move to C1, C4, then die, or A3, D3, then die. This suggests omitting 2 is the way to go, leaving MoldeVort with choices of 1, 3, 4, and 5. From here out, I'll refer to A1, A5, E1, and E5 as corners, and the remaining non-lethal squares as edges. Everything is symmetrical, so only two distinct starting positions for MoldeVort exist: A1 (corner) and A2 (edge). Imagine the board rotates and mirrors after every move to put MoldeVort in one of those spots if possible. From A1, a pick of 1, 3, or 5 will let you pick an edge. (A2, A4, E4) A pick of 4 will let you pick a corner. (E1) From A2, a pick of 1, 3, or 5 will let you pick a corner. (A1, A5, E5) A pick of 4 will let you pick an edge. (E2) With that, you can trap him for as many moves as needed!

I didnt watch the video yet but i think the answer is: its all about prioritizing spots on the chess board, looking for the chance to move to the corners of the chess board is the safest play, then the next safest play is to move along the edges of the board to maximize the potential distance from one side of the board to the one parallel to it. And obviously pick the lowest distinct whole numbers 1,2, 3, and 4 In summary: prioritize movements that let you get into corners and always try to move along the edges. Pick whole numbers 1,2,3,4. This should keep MoldeVort in the chessboard for as long as the person decides to stop, in which they would move diagonally. I simulated this and no matter what whole number i chose, I never ran into the scenario that MoldeVort got outside the chessboard.
