The word "each" in the wording of the riddle made me think we could ask each goblin 2 questions, so I would have just tried to ask each goblin the same question twice.

I thought you can ask "2 questions, only directed at 1 goblin each?" Doesn't that mean you have to ask 1 question to 2 different goblins?

You can also interpret it as: you can't ask a question to the group. Each question must be directed at a single goblin.

Much simpler answer: Pick a random goblin, ask him: "Who is my friend". Whoever he points to, ask that new goblin: "Who is my friend". The answer to the second question will always be true. Explanation: 1) If the first goblin was your friend, he will point to himself. So on the second question, he will point to himself again. 2) If the first goblin lied, he will point to some random non-friend goblin. On the second question, this goblin will now tell the truth and point to your friend. 3) If the first goblin told the truth, he will point to your friend. Since your friend always tells the truth, on the second question, he will point to himself.

Ppl ignore the importance of proper definitions and grammar in math/logic etc. "you may ask two questions only directed at one goblin each..." "only" here should be before "two". It's a misplaced modifier, which creates the confusion. It makes it feel like it modifies "directed at one goblin each" phrase(because just modifying "directed" makes even less sense). Then you "questions" with the modified phrase, falsely ignoring the "each" at the end of the sentence. All this happens so fast as you hear a seemingly simple sentence you don't need to think about. Especially tripy if english isn't your native language. At least that's what happened with me. I then thought the solution would be too simple and knew it meant total, but also had to rehear the setence to make sure.

It was not clarified if the goblins switch their honesty collectively, in which case you could also ask "Who is my friend?" to any goblin and then the same to the one he pointed to. The one pointed to last is your friend.

"2 questions directed at one goblin each" makes me think that I cannot ask the same goblin multiple questions. Could have been worded better.

I interpreted the riddle as being only two questions total, not two questions per goblin...either way, there is a solution. Ask the first one "which goblin is my friend?". Ask the goblin he points to "which goblins are not my friend?" If the first goblin lies, the second goblin will tell the truth, and you will know because he will also include himself in the 'not a friend' category. In that situation, the one the second goblin doesn't point to is your friend. If the first goblin tells the truth, the second goblin is your friend, and would therefore not lie and would point to all of the other goblins as part of the 'not a friend' category in response to the second question.

Props to my bro for a creative solution: Replacing the 1st question with one only your friend could know the answer to. If telling the truth an enemy goblin would answer "I don't know". The only problem is, if there is such a question, so that the enemy cannot guess the answer 100% if he lies. Other than that, the 2nd question and result are the same.

I came up with a "different" solution, the same thing but asking "Were you with me as a human yesterday (or last day he was with him)"

That’s not what the King of the Goblins looks like. We all know it’s David Bowie.

Just watch "The Labyrinth" You'll see the same kind of riddle, which makes me believe this is where it was derived from, as in the movie, David Bowie WAS the Goblin King.

Actually it couldn't be my friend who is captured by goblins, because my friends and I all know what to do to avoid being around goblins: Just tell them "David Bowie is disappointed" and they'll cry.

If they were Really my friend, they'd stay a goblin and convince the other four to be my minions.

How can I be sure that every gobblin konws who my friend is? and in the secound case (if the gobblin answers the first question with "no") If I ask "who is not my friend?" the gobblin could still say something like "nobody" or "everyone" or simply "you" and I would know nothing more. btw, sorry for my bad english im from Germany.

I guess there is a confusion whether the goblin individually reverses the truth or it is something collective. Also not clear if you have to ask two questions to the same goblin or not. Assuming that goblins as a group they change the pattern (That is after the truth lie and after the lie truth) and you can ask two questions to the same goblin or two different goblins, here is an alternative way: Pick randomly goblin and ask him " Can you show me my friend?" 1-) If he is a liar and not your friend, he will point to someone that is not your friend, but will tell you the truth. Ask the pointed goblin same question and he will point your friend. 2-) If he is honest and not your friend, he will point you your friend, which will also tell you the truth, when you ask him "Can you show me my friend?". Simply he will point himself. 3-) If he is your friend at the first, he will point himself, you will ask him again and he will point himself second time! So in short second pointed goblin is your friend. But if goblins are telling the truth and lie based on the individual choice than it does not work.

I would start with "are you a goblin?"

If the first goblin u started with said no, ask him "If I asked you if you are my friend, would u say yes?" if he says yes, he's ur friend, otherwise the remaining one is

My guess: Ask the goblin if they're your friend. Then ask the goblin something you can easily tell by looking at them, like if they're wearing some form of clothing. This way you can tell if they're lying based on their second answer. If they say yes to the first question about being your friend and say no to the second question about wearing clothing, then that's your friend. Edit: You can probably only ask one set of two questions, can't you? Well whatever, I tried.

You know what's easier and a lot less confusing? Ask one of the goblins if they are green if they respond yes proceed to ask who is not your friend. If they say no proceed to ask who is your friend. It's a lot easier

Easiest way to do it would be to simply yell across all 5 goblins, "This question is directed at my friend," then proceed with what ever question you wish. As you have specified that it is directed at one of the goblins, your now transformed friend, he would be the only one to answer.

I think you can solve this in 1 question. "If you would answer in opposite manner on your current mental state, who is not my friend?" because 1st if its a goblin telling truth he's answer would be a lie, then he will choose my friend 2nd if its a false goblin he will would have to tell the truth but since he's lying he will tell a lie and will choose my friend 3rd if its my friend he will choose himself

I call this the Walter White technique Question 1: "what's my name?" if they say anything other than your name, they already lied so you know it isn't your friend. if they say your name, it's your friend, or a goblin telling the truth. If it was a goblin telling the truth they will have to lie when you ask the next question. Question 2: "Is (your name) my name?" if it was a goblin they have to say no because they told the truth the first time. if they say yes it is your friend because they answered truthfully to both questions.

Another method: Ask random goblin "Not including you, who is my friend" twice. 80% chance he will give you two different people as the answer (one of which is your friend). Then, ask anyone one of the two are you my friend twice. If one says yes both times, he is your friend. If not, the other goblin is your friend. Also, in the beginning their is a 20% chance the goblin you choose will say "I am your friend", in which case they're your friend. Also, you have no friends.

My strategy is to ask what 1+1 is twice and if they choose different answers then they must be a goblin and since the friend always tells the truth then he would be the only one that would answer the same answer twice

Casual Gaming you're absolutely right; your way is the optimal solution. Your friend is the only one who will not change his answer to the exact same "yes or no" question. (I love solving these riddles, but I hate how they're explained.) You could even ask them all "are you my enemy" twice. Your friend is the only one who will say "no" both times. Everyone else has to change their answer. (I don't know why he added that extra bull****.)

I don't know that if the goblins know who my friend is. You never state that in the question. They'll answer "I don't know" at the 2nd question, and it's still a true answer.

The easiest way would be to ask first: "who is my friend" to any goblin, than he points at some other goblin or himself and then you ask the goblin that the first one points at the same question and he will either tell the truth and point at himself because he is your friend, or he will point at someone other, which will then be definitely be your friend. Won't work if both the first and second goblin "Start" with a lie. Remember any given (one) goblin has the sequence lie, truth, lie, truth; but not the group as a whole. E.g., first goblin lies and says a real goblin is actually your friend. Then you ask that goblin the same question, he lies and points at some other random goblin also not your friend.

Yeah, but that's not the case. Each goblin can start with either a lie or the truth.

But what if you ask a 'real' goblin, "Are you my friend?" and they say 'yes' but they are actually lying...

There is another solution : Ask twice "Which one of you is my friend?", ask the second question where you are pointed the first time and go with the answer you get the second time.

Is it just me or did OP fail to mention that the Goblins only answer in 'yes' or 'no'? He just said they either tell the truth or lie... This riddle would be very different if they aren't limited to just 'yes' or 'no'
