Can you Safari in a Wheelchair?! - Motorized Chair Mod!

Today we find out if Cambry's chair can go on a Safari! Check out the Bill and Melinda Gates Annual Letter here!: www.inflcr.co/SH1jf And thanks to Bill and Melinda for sponsoring this video. We knew we were headed to Africa, so we decided to check out this electric wheelchair mod called the Firefly. Its super expensive, but if it helped Cambry get around on rough roads and dirt trails, it would be totally worth it! Come with us as we check out this strange wheelchair contraption. Spoiler alert... its a bit over priced for what it can accomplish: amzn.to/2w7nHAg But it is really good in specific scenarios.

    55bn $ that is the amount of Money the foundation has raised so far. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is really a blessing. Peopl should respect Bill Gates for how generous and humble he is. He donated billions upon billions of dollars himself and why not. With his wealth you will never feel the difference. Not donating or using th money in a senisble way is just vanity. No one has use for more than 1 or 2 billion $. You can only buy so many Yachts and Mansions.

    I've had a Firefly for about 3 years and sadly, it is expensive but it's one of the cheapest devices around. Check out the Triride or Batec, I think they are far better but more than double the price of the FireFly so for me, not worth it. You can wrap ankle weights to the horizontal bar/clamp, one on either side and that massively increases the front wheel traction. It's seriously night and day on how the Firefly works.

    Energy density means nothing if it’s not 1:1 with the machine because otherwise it becomes wasted potential energy. Electrical energy is more efficient when obtained from a green energy source such as solar. This where fossil fuel fail as an energy source because it isn’t renewable or reusable.

    @@anandcheruvu963 depending on how stable the person in the wheelchair is, leaning forward isn't a good idea because thay have to push back a lot with their arms (Cambry might can) some even have a belt to keep them in the seat. But yeah of course bringing a bit more weight to the front helps

    Small suggestion for you. You might want to see if you can find a tire that has more tread on it/ like say a off road kind for that tire size and see if that helps with the overall grip. Another idea would be to add some weight to the front directly above the tire on the shaft itself. (Provided the frame can support it safely.) Its quite possible those two ideas would help cancel/stop the burnout action Cambry's experiencing and possibly allow for better overall grip and handling.

    Hi, I have a firefly attachment for my wheelchair. I can't self propel so I am completely reliant on it or another person. A few things that I have found that improve its performace off-road. 1. you can get an off-road tire for the front wheel that has better traction. 2. I found messing around with the axle on my wheelchair and the angles of the attachment improved how easily I could climb hills. 3. If all else fails I can go up pretty steep hills backwards. Thanks for talking about flying with it. I've had mine for 2 years and I've been too scared to fly with it. Sophie

    There's hand powered trike add-ons too, where you have a regular old bike chain and gear, except the pedals are little handles, and up near the steering. Might be a good compromise for other users interested in a trike conversion, since there's no battery and motor weight, but you still get gearing to amplify your force which regular pushrims certainly do not do.

    Except for that this doesn't get you independence. I'd almost say get a thing like that that doesn't have a motor - just two bigger swivelly wheels. Then she can still use her arms to push on the back wheels (which won't slip) and actually have independence.

    Mind you, it's a lot of money on a disability pension, plus it still needs someone to assist fairly often so fails on that mark anyway.

  • @kaitlyn__L

    @kaitlyn__L

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Grass Blocker ehh it's like 99% independence. In the kind of chair Camry has you can do wheelies and stuff, as she talked about in the video. Some people have posted videos of going backwards up stairs and stuff in this kind of chair, though that needs some intense strength (making horizontal wheel movement translate into upward force up the edge of the stair, bad conversion rate of force due to angles). This type of power assist unit is mostly to give you extra range, so you're not pushing yourself manually, and have a bigger front wheel that won't get stuck in ground cracks etc - there's also big non motorised third wheels available like the Freewheel that do a lot to make pushing manually easier on rough terrain, in your regular posture without handlebars or a battery. Depending on your condition if you fall out of the chair might be fucked, but plenty of people have also posted videos like "here's how I get back into my wheelchair on the floor with my paralysis" so that's not strictly impossible either. The main ways you might actually need someone else's help are if you can't find a dropped kerb or get a wheel stuck and can't manoeuvre out at all, like she demonstrated in the video (again caused by the extra battery weight though, she said she'd have been fine without it). Even then it's like, asking a passerby rather than needing a nurse all the time though. Certainly me and lots of my friends are Camry's age with a similar chair and live independently going outside. Honestly as the video says, the extra weight of the motor was a detriment on wet terrain. So an unpowered third wheel with no battery weight would have probably been more accessible than this motorised unit, for going outside alone. People use the Freewheel to go like hiking and stuff, it adds hardly any extra weight so then you only need to worry about the gradient as if it were paved.
