    I didn't nail it, but I did fairly well. A year ago, I wouldn't have been able to answer any of these. Two trips to the ER, a drastic shift in dietary pattern and exercise, along with reading, and watching a lot of your videos has changed all that. My health has improved a lot! Thank you for for that.

    Interesting and useful quiz, especially the question on how young people can have artery lesions. I think one way to engage students more is to debunk common misunderstandings, for example: 1. All fats and all carbs are bad. No, it's saturated fats and refined carbs we must worry about. 2. We need meat to have enough protein, especially for growing adolescents. 3. We need dairy for strong bones.

    Nice quiz, I think it was just right in terms of difficulty, though unfortunately I think people that don't track nutrition science like your viewers would have a very difficult time with this quiz. Most people I talk to about nutrition don't even know the absolute basics. Glad to hear these kids are learning nutrition in High School, I had to learn all this stuff in adulthood.

    That bit about earliest cardiovascular lesion age, was new to me. That's pretty crazy to think about. But I personally think these questions covers basic nutrition knowledge, that I feel should be mandatory to include in even grade school classes, as knowledge about healthy eating, can't be taught too early.....as one of the answers in Dr. Gil's quiz also revealed! 😉

    I thought it was pitched at the right level. I went plant-based just over four years ago and I've been reading about nutrition and I've been a subscriber to your excellent channel for most of that time. I like to think I know a little bit about nutrition and what's good for me, but when push comes to shove and I have to give some definitions and explanations I realise I need to up my game! Thanks for all your hard work Gil; your videos are so well presented and informative. (I used to train teachers so I know about teaching, learning and explaining). Obrigado e Feliz Ano Novo.

    Good level for students. But one question is too easy. You should require them to answer which vitamin K, 1, 2, 3, whatever. (Of course I know all fat soluble vitamins. I also selected C as something we can't live without. Did you know cats can synthesize C, but they still like to eat it? Plenty of them like foods with natural berries particularly.) I also define superfood as nutrient dense, off the charts antioxidants, or a long list of studies confirm tons of benefits. I mentioned eggs, blueberries and olive oil.

    "Superfood" is a marketing term. Usually applied to a food which has a functional property or health-promoting constituent. Some foods have several constituents which may be health promoting; say Turmeric root, blueberries, or green tea. It's true that every food COULD be replaced in the diet, and there are probably no specific foods that are essential. On the other hand, you can't get curcumin from any other food- it's specific to Turmeric. This sort of does make Turmeric a "special" food.

    As a non-American, I am more familiar with kilojoules (kJ) with the figures cited typically 37 kJ, 29 kJ, 17 kJ, and 16 kJ respectively for fats/lipids, alcohol, protein, and carbohydrate. However, I have seen in the literature calories (cal) distinguished from kilocalories (Cal) with a capital C, with the values 9 Cal, 7 Cal, 4 Cal, and 4 Cal.

    Well, being a bit of a nutrition nerd, I did pretty well. BUT I missed some I didn't expect to! For an essential fat, I said Omega 3 - not LA & ALA. And I knew heart disease begins at least at birth/infancy - but, I did not know there were studies showing it starting in utero!! Wow, great quiz! Muito obrigado! BTW, I know it's not the case - but I wish everyone knew these.

  • @nimblegoat
    @nimblegoat5 ай бұрын

    Thanks - In some older videos you were saying how people mis-use the "U" shape curve ie people in bad shape can be on lower side . I think body fat is so much more nuance than that - right level would vary by sex , age , fat type ( brown etc ) , genetics , where body stores fat - visceral vs a more even distribution - also fat has many good points and bad ( eg higher ldl , inflammation etc ) - I don't think the definitive answer is here yet - Probably makes sense for each person to find their own right level - given ongoing blood tests - but a more general take would be great - personally I will try for a slightly lower than average in healthy range - and try and keep triglycerides low as well as sugar spikes - that gives me fat's protection as I get older - ie as long as I boost immune system by exercise , sleep , nutrition - then other things than cardiac events are probably more concerning eg pneumonia , cancer etc -- Plus thoughts on Lipo A seems to be a big modifier of all research if you are unlucky enough to have high natural level . Most 100 year old people seem normal weight and normal body fat - so the U shape curve may have truth

    Most fun I've ever had in a KZread video!! Question: the Ornish diet recommends ~10% calories from fat (very low)...is this enough to be able to absorb the fat soluble vitamins? If not, what is the minimum one should consume to ensure adequate absorption?

  • @Julottt

    @Julottt

    5 ай бұрын

    This is a myth, Nutritionfacts have a video about this, we dont need to eat fat concentrated foods to absorbs anything. Esselstyn explains the only essential amount of fat we need to be healthy is few grams of omega 3 and 6 so 2-3% of calories coming from fat.

  • @demonfedor3748
    @demonfedor37485 ай бұрын

    I nailed the amount of kcal ( metric all day long,baby) in alcohol for some reason and the rest of the question too . In heart disease I assumed 50% death rate lol. Well,maybe in 2050 it will be. Essential nutrient? Nailed and double nailed the bonus by giving myself an even harder question naming essencial amino acids( I think I only named 5 out of 9 on the spot,but still) not just an essential nutrient. For the superfood question I know it's pure marketing but I consider nutrient dense leafy green to be "superfoods" since they have little calories and lots of micronutrients. For omega 3 question I answered flax seeds for ALA and fish for DHA. The artery lesions question I think I equated it with heart disease and answered 7 since some conditions can make children to have heart disease,however somewhere in the back of my mind I remember hearing children being born with a streak of cholesterol lining their arteries. Didn't recognize the term I guess. For essential fats I named DHA and EPA( linolenic acid however totally slipped away from my mind oops) and I mostly stand by it since the conversion rate from ALA is pretty low,same idea as beta-carotene and retinol (vitamin A). Which means I consider ALA to be conditionally essential,not DHA and EPA,but that's a debate for another time same as a rabbit hole of what's impairing that conversion. Coagulation and fat-soluble vitamins? Yeah,nailed.

    I failed because I missed on the superfood, although when someone makes videos about the benefits of individual food items or supplements, I tend to view with skepticism. There can be money / marketing at play. The question about when atherosclerosis can be detected, in fetuses, was extremely good. That information with stay with those students of that age, especially because it is shocking. Maybe it will make a difference in their lives

    If atherosclerosis begins in utero, can it be that, even under the best conditions with optimal lifestyle and nutrition, our vascular systems are simply too fragile to not deteriorate as we age, no matter what we do? It's just instead of getting wrinkly skin (using skin as only one other physiological example of age-related deterioration) it just so happens our vascular system is directly linked to our mortality as it ages. Our vascular system is our weakest link and, for most, it's the link that breaks the continuity of life in the end.

    I missed the "How early...?" one. I knew they found it in young soldiers that died in WW2. In utero? That seems like evidence of a vertically transmitted infection. I learned that omega 9 was also required, in addition to omega 3 and 6. It rarely ever needs supplemented, or any effort to insure it is in the diet, but is required. At least according to the nutrition class I had 17? years ago.

    I class some foods that could be considered weeds, but are highly beneficial nutritionally, a superfood. Such as Jerusalem artichoke, globe artichoke, plantain ribwort, wild raddish, purslane, prickly pear, asparagus, rocket, and others. Probably would put some things like liver in there too. Like you crap foods like lettice, anything on the the opposite side of the scale has to be a superfood.

    Here were my answers: Essential Nutrient? Nutrients your body does not produce (enough) on its own eg. Omega3, Vitamin C Superfood? None, no scientific definition Source of Omega3s Fish, oysters, algae Source of ALA: linseeds, hemp seeds, walnuts 1 of DHA: fish Number 1 cause of death Heart disease: 10% (almost right) At what age can we see artery lesions? At birth (almost right) Macronutrient Carbs, protein, fat Which has more kcals in 1g of fat, protein or carbs? Fat Protein and carbs are 4, fat is 9 kcals Alcohol is 6? (almost right) Essential fats: Poly-unsaturated fat, mono-unsaturated fat Vitamin in coagulation Potassium (wrong) Good questions for high school students! Just the right level of difficulty, I think. I'd probably add a question about if fibre or carbs are essential vs if they are benefitial for health.
