What is THE Best Diet? | 2021 US News Ranking

BEST diet? US News ranking of best diets
Oscars for food nerds. By nutrition scientists. substantial diet advice
Best diets overall. DASH and flexitarian. DASH = dietary approaches to stop hypertension. DASH is low in sodium, emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and low-fat dairy; low in fatty meats, full-fat dairy and added sugar
Flexitarian = flexible vegetarian. a diet moderate in meats. plant-centered
#1 best diet was the Mediterranean diet
themes of Mediterranean diet: produce, nuts, olive oil, some dairy and lean meats, low in red meat and added sugar
Mediterranean diet also #1 in best heart-healthy diets , best diabetes diets, best plant-based diets, best healthy eating and easiest diets to follow. scientists love the Mediterranean diet
ornish diet also delivers cardiovascular benefits. #1 heart health tied with mediterranean. But ornish included other changes so we cant attribute the results to diet alone
Mediterranean diet: population data. general dietary recs focus on diet long-term. Mediterranean diet associated with good health outcomes
How ‘easy’ is the diet? ideally a diet is good health-wise AND easy
Other diets that made the top 10: MIND diet, Nordic diet (pescatarian-ish diet), vegetarian and ornish diet
vegan and keto? 2 most popular diets online
Vegan = #17. Keto = #37. only diet that ranked below keto was Dukan diet.
top nutrition scientists & USDA recs are similar. representative of experts in nutrition. nutrition professionals and public disconnected. online it's keto vs vegan. experts like Mediterranean. most people eat the seefood diet. They see food and they eat it
keto in top 5 for fast weight loss, vegan in top 5 for weight loss, diabetes and heart health so they’re not anti-keto or anti-vegan
diets downscored for ‘ease’ factor. are vegan and keto easy?
maybe scientists should just tell us the heathiest diet?
nutrient completeness. keto and vegan don't necessarily make you nutrient deficient...
For vegans, b12 is important.
diets: short vs long-term. vegan diets in 7day Adventists
new study: vegan vs Mediterranean diet. People on vegan diet ate less calories. how is each diet designed?
vegan diet linked to environment, animal welfare.
keto: fast weight loss. 10y on keto?
keto at bottom? we associate keto with bacon, lard and butter. nutrition scientists unfavorable
keto= #34 for heart-health. high saturated fat, low fiber version? keto means ketogenic. Very low carbohydrate so you go into ketosis. high saturated fat not a requirement. low carb diet can be low in saturated fat and improve cardiovascular markers
if we rank keto based on an unhealthy version we need to rank the junk vegan version (what a lot of vegans do) and Mediterranean with junk foods (how most Mediterraneans eat nowadays)
ideal diets or popular diets? We can’t compare perfect Mediterranean diet to viral keto
keto long-term? keto doable in a safer way
low rankings for keto = caution?
keto camp not worried. keto ranked at bottom but ads are for keto. keto is a financial hit
diets not compared side by side. study with vegan vs mediterranean diet, but 10y on Mediterranean vs vegan vs keto?
Mediterranean Diet = good bet overall. mediterranean diet not necessarily best diet for every human.
diets on the ranking are similar. Mediterranean diet, DASH, etc. Dash is mediterranean diet minus salt. MIND diet is a mix of Mediterranean and DASH. M in MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH
dashdiet.org: DASH Mediterranean and DASH vegetarian
easier to know which foods to focus on and which to eat sparingly. I don’t have a name for my diet.
ALL top diets are rich in plant foods. Plant-rich diets dominate ranking. ALL top diets avoid ultraprocessed foods. All top diets avoid excess of saturated fat
which diet is best? Any diet rich in unprocessed plant foods.
key is maintaining a healthy diet
all of those tweaks fit into a health-promoting pattern. Mediterranean diet or not

Arab here...I think lifestyle is just as big a predictor of health as what you eat. I lived in Palestine for over 10 years and we walked A TON, got plenty of Vitamin D, connected with 3 generations of family on a weekly if not daily basis, and had genuine friendships. Not to mention picked figs and walnuts straight off the trees and then we would just sit on the front steps talking the day away, basking in the sun and greeting neighbors as they passed by. We had larger families and so people did not have the luxury to stuff themselves. Sometimes, the people that have less... actually have more.

Follow the advice of Steve Phinney on a 'Well formed, ketogenic diet' and all is good unless you are a high responder. The problem is the plethora of keto junk foods/recipies and this idea that it's all about a boat load of bacon and half a cow for dinner. A typical meal could be salmon and a large salad with an olive oil based dressing.

Vegan diet is an umbrella term ranging from junk food vegan to the Whole Food Plant Based diet. It is similar to when studies or diets say carbohydrates which covers refined sugars and complex carbs. I think these studies should be more specific. There was a study once that said people did worse eating soy, but they did not mention the study used isolated soy protein. Studies can be tricky and deceiving so people need to look a little further abut the facts, as these are often hidden. I think people need to look at who funded the study and make sure what they are using are not an isolated portion of the food to make it look bad.

And Keto is also an umbrella term. Low carb high fat, zero carb (carnivore), Atkins, Paleo, Banting, etc. The studies I have seen have had problems. Lots of confirmation bias from Saladino, Baker, Berry, Nally, Noakes, and Fung, too. The problem is nutritional laziness. What is easy, what is convenient. Let's look for the magic pill. And when issues arise, they'll play around with Intermittent Fasting and chug down bone broth, ketone drinks, and sugar free stimulants. Believe me, I have been involved with nutrition for 17 years. Keto has to keep coming up with gimmicks to remain relevant and attract a younger audience.

@@skinny_pumpkin_lady890 i feel like keto is just humans relearning how the body actually functions since we messed it up so terribly in the 1950s. the more people realize how our body metabolizes fat, protein, and carbohydrates and how they affect our hormones, the more people realize they shouldn't be eating so many carbohydrates 24/7 like the average american. ketogenic diets have had many names, yes, but i feel like it's the natural refinement of peoples' education towards whole foods and how people ate before we started adding seed oils, refined grains, and chickens that are bread to grow to adulthood in weeks. in the end, the true culprit seems to be the processed foods and the industry that makes them. whether they be in "keto bars" or "vegan meat", they're all just trying to push fake food on us. maybe it's ok as a treat sometimes, but they're dangerous in high amounts.

@@LucasTigy2 “people shouldn’t be eating too many carbs 24/7” That statement has no basis in science. Humans shouldn’t be consuming too much energy; including carbs and fats. But if you’re within your caloric limits, are getting enough protein, as well as enough essential fatty acids (we really don’t need that much) and one chooses to get the remainder of their calories all from carbs - they will be perfectly fine. And I say this as a person on a low carb diet! Low carb is just a tool to make caloric control easier. But high carb low fat also works for many!

@@skinny_pumpkin_lady890 The biggest difference btw the two is with fish and meat you can eat without any salt or seasonings. Vegetarians always put an obscene amount of salt and seasonings on their food because it tastes either bland when cooked or inedible when raw. Only exception is avocadoes and coconuts which are low in antinutrients and nature wants you to eat them.

Mediterranean specifically Italian in my opinion. They key is we do not load food with a plethora of ingredients. No sugary sauces. People don’t understand that Italians also eat a lot of fish and seafood. It’s not all about pasta and pizza. Everything is seasoned mildly but still has massive flavor.

Great work! Your summary and overall message in the video is spot on: Do what’s right for you using these common guidelines, and make up a name for it. I’ve been on what I used to call “Keto” for five years, not to lose weight but to head off diabetes. My thinking-and my diet-has evolved. Now I would call it “Mediterranean-Keto.” It’s still low carb, but now it’s higher in protein and lower in fat, especially saturated fat, with lots of veggies and some berries. It works great for me and is easy to maintain. But that’s just me.

I'm coming from the opposite camp. I had open heart surgery from years of junk food eating. Got my act together after the operation. I went whole plant based aka vegan for two years and after educating myself some more with top notch utube channels like this....I introduced a little dairy at my main meal only and only about 3 times a week. I guess im in the flexiterian category now. Works well for me too and is less restrictive especially eating out. A bit of chicken or salmon is a lot healthier in my book than having one of those vegan crap burgers when eating out in a restaurant.

I follow the spray mediterranean plant based vegan dash portfolio fasting diet. It means I eat mostly fruits and vegetables. Vegan "junk food" a couple times a week. I don't add extra salt, choose low salt options, and try and make sure I get a good amount of potassium. I fast one day per week (mostly) and once or twice a year do a longer fast. "Spray mediterranean"? I don't use a lot of oil but when I do I spray the pan instead of soaking it. My breakfast is usually the same everyday. Oats with flaxseed, chia, pumpkin seeds and a bunch of berries, kiwi, banana with a side of oat yogurt with some alma powder and plant based collagen mixed in and a couple walnuts chopped up on top. Follow that with some green tea to sip most of the morning and even though I am barely getting 600 calories in that meal, most days I probably could stop eating after that meal I am so full. So they should add my diet to the mix 😂

the MIND diet is based on what's known about preventing Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative disease. It's basically a fusion of Mediterranean and DASH i.e. rich in fruits and vegetables, low in saturated fat. It can have a substantial amount of fat (e.g. from olive oil, nuts and some from animal products if people wish). The available evidence advises against a diet high in animal fats for anti-neurodegenerative (among many other) purposes

Even though it is lowish GI, and the insulin won't spike as high as sugar, surely there be a rise in insulin over a longer period of time. Do you feel tired during the day? If yes, Probably been eating to many carbohydrates, and over a long time you have damaged insulin response. Would best approach to have meals with a small amount of pasta and loads of vegetables, like 60-90% veg.

I still had some issues with joints though, and also I do largely care for animal welfare, but admittedly not to the extent that I'd sacrifice my own welfare (sorry, but I'll do what I can) I've started doing a basically keto Pescatarian diet and I've found it's pretty much still as effective for satiety and joints have gotten better. I really hope more research goes into specifically keto variants that aren't the most popular type.

Like Ayurveda (India), Chinese, etc. Because like Mediterrenean diet, these diets were also very carefully crafted, researched & studied (Ancient times not modern) & have been consumed for a significantly longer time than mediterrneans (like atleast 2-3 thousand years, it's a very old civilisation). So, I'm sort of curious about how something like Ayruveda would fair against Mediterranean.

Quick question regarding keto diets. We are told that insulin is the culprit for fat storage. In a low carb diet blood insulin is kept low. But if we consume too much fat, i.e. well over our metabolic needs, how are food lipids eliminated ? Can fat still be stored in fat cells if no insulin is present ? Or are all the lipids transformed into ketones and the excess eliminated in the urines. Or both ? Love so much your channel.

depends on total caloric intake. if we overeat calories, both excess fat and carbs can be stored as fat. in fact, rigorous isocaloric experiments have shown little difference in fat gain/loss whether the diet is low carb or low fat bottomline: eat whatever helps you keep calories reasonable & weight in the healthy range AND ensures long-term health (that's where the science comes in) kzread.info/dash/bejne/fpx-tqt8fZWclJM.html

I love your contents and channel. I agree most of what you covered! But when it comes to food, I am still confused about 'organic' food. I think the modern society and diet culture I've grown with somehow totally brainwashed me and make me think 'anyway organic is better' (don't know how and why to be honest as you mentioned it's still controversial). For example, when I see broccoli on nor-organic section and on organic section, I feel like that non-organic broccoli has lots of chemicals inside/outside and it's true that they look more GREEN and organic one look less green and they are smaller (but usually I notice that organic one lasts longer...). That is why I keep spending more money on organic, but I feel confused and when I am on a budget, I feel like what I am doing is right or just wasting money...? I hope you can address this issue some day! :) Thanks.

I was referring to how there are certain foods that are subsidized on the backend--in the USA that's things like corn, many meat products, etc.. It's why you can go to McDonald's and get food for very cheap. It's what makes the fast food business even exist, and, of course, is one of the worst kinds of diets.

I'm glad Mediterranean Diet ranked #1 on U.S. News 2021 because that's essentially what I'm doing. Although I do it in a variation that's closer to the three Abrahamic religions. Three rules I implement on myself are: No meat and dairy in the same meal (inspired by Kosher), Shellfish in moderation is okay (inspired by Halal), and absolutely no pork whatsoever (inspired by both). Just to put it on the record out there, I am a Christian. From my personal experience, going Mediterranean meals enhanced my athletic capabilities where I'm able to perform high-volume compound exercises with calisthenics and weightlifting. My VO2 max has improved with a fair amount of cardio and I've lost tremendous amounts of fat mass in my body along with gaining noticeable muscles mass for almost a year thus far. I tried going vegan at one point, I didn't like it. I tried keto, it was good for a little while but then I got sick from the keto flu which I just could not get along with. For those who have no problems with either one of those, big ups to you. But in my opinion, Mediterranean is probably the most complete nutrient diet there is. And the reviews from the experts explains everything.
