Can you make the Honda Ridgeline more Fuel Efficient with an AEM Intake?

I take the Honda and test to see if the stock OEM intake gets better fuel economy over the aftermarket Performance AEM Intake.

    Years ago at Sport Compact Car magazine, we did a similar test with intake systems and on average they did little to nothing for fuel economy. Although to be fair, they seemed to help out with hp/torque measured on a chassis dyno. Good job on the test.

    Im glad you made this video. on modern engines, basically anything newer than 2001 when ODB2 really got more complex, these CAI style filters do nothing for performance or MPG unless you're willing to do an actual stage2 tune. The ECM is programmed to default to meet emission standards, not horsepower or torque. supposed denser/more air into an engine means more fuel added. I don't think adding fuel equals better MPG LOL.

    I've had an oem replacement K&N filter in my '15 3.5 V6 Accord for about 5 years now. It has always been between 1-3 mpg more than when the oem paper filter was installed, with much better off-idle throttle response. Not sure why the drop in mpg from the AEM filter, but the inboard computer might need a little more time to learn the AEM flow rates per rpm.

    The trip computer is always wrong. My average difference is 2.2mpg off from actual based on real world driving. You can see my wrap up video of the trip across United States. However these are both are AEM filters and the closed system seems to be doing better as it sucks in colder air compared to the AEM open intake. I will be doing a video shortly that will be comparing Stock filter verse ECO. That will give a full and complete comparison for all these items.

I asked an engineer at a training lecture n I was asking about tires n mileage in the same light as the above video and his reply was you know we spend millions in research to get the best mileage for this car to get the best mileage we can squeeze out of all the technology so why do you want to change the tires? We would have done it otherwise!!! 🌷☮️

  • @YuriyMotso

    @YuriyMotso

    3 жыл бұрын

    I do agree with you on all but However the tires is not necessarily true. Car manufacturers need to make money and the vehicle has to be as inexpensive to manufacture as possible. Tires are not a critical component for them as they know many people switch them out anyways. Tires are negotiated to be good enough but not the best for the vehicle to keep cost down. Imagine they sell hundreds of thousands of cars a year and to reduce the cost by $200 on a vehicle by getting a mid grade tire as “factory” saves the company upwards and over $20 million dollars a year. So I agree that they do the best the can for efficiency but not on tires as it’s not manufactured by OEM and a bought out item.

My 2018 Ridge RTL-E at beginning was doing 28 mpg to 31, than the honda dealership in florida replaced the fuel pump and fuel line and the mpg start going down and now after 2 years its doing 17/18 mpg hwy at max speed of 75mph, and 11/12 mpg city+hwy, i call Honda USA right after i noticed the mpg going down, so they told me go to a dealership twice and so far they can’t find anything wrong….always had a K&N filter since i got it. I can’t smell any gas from a leak, but im doing a record of the mileage with receipts from Costco…Honda even told me to change the brand of gas, but its the same…any one has an idea what should i do next ? By the way, i was always driving very easy on the gas pedal and a month ago i start pressure a little more and the mpg went up to 14/15 mpg…looks like i should hammer down from now on…

    Having owned two G2 Ridgelines, I'd say you had some gas pump cutoff issues with the regular air box. Very rarely is the trip computer that close (you will always be 2.4 mpg or more high on the computer for hwy miles). I suspect if you did it again, hit the same pump on the same day, the AEM Performance airtake would be slightly HIGHER. I'd guess/assume you got a different pump at Costco and the pressure switch was off.

    Nice thorough vid. Was there a change in wind speed or wind direction between both trips? Air temp too? Also you would have the use the exact same pump nozzle installed the exact same depth and angle for this to be more accurate. I'm guessing the AEM had small gains actually. I have a 2018 Honda Ridgeline LTR-E AWD I get a little less than 23 mpg highway actual and 14 mpg city. I have a hard time believing that mileage you stated unless it is a 2WD. I have had 4 Honda Ridgelines 2 G1 and 2 G2, one G2 not AWD 17 city and maybe 25 highway. I keep records every fill up. I had the dealership recalibrate the crank using software but that didn't help. If you change anything other than what came with the Ridgeline it voids the warranty. The G2 AWD sucks for gas mileage . I love the ride and power and the convivence of a small truck and SUV and ride of a car. There are some issues with the 2017-2019 Ridgelines and Pilots and Odyssey with the injectors. Honda has extended the warranty to 10 years or 150,000 miles on the injectors for original owners and other owners.

    I know where your coming from because I heard rumors of these kind of numbers and I never believed it either until I moved to the south. The video literally shows my distance traveled between fill ups and shows exactly how many gallons are poured into the tank for this exact purpose so that if a viewer disagrees they can do the math themselves to double check. The truck is though only freeway miles on cruise control so that the test can be repeated as closely as possible. Yes in real world with city driving you will not get over 23-25mpg but in this specific test yes you will. I have done this similar test maybe 30 times and not based off trip computer but off calculation based off miles/gallons, I can get between 28-30 mpg with ease and consistently. So hopefully that answers your question but again these numbers are just for testing in as controlled environment as possible to be able to determine which products are the most efficient.

And again this test is strictly from pump to freeway and back to pump so almost no city driving or heavy acceleration that could potentially affect your fuel economy. In ECO mode, my 2019 Ridgeline RTL-T has gauged 34 MPG on the local freeway (GA 400/US 19) between Cumming and Alpharetta, when window shopping North Point Mall. I now own a 2020 Ridgeline RTL-E, and went on vacation to the Smokies (US 19 to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN) and briefly hit 27 MPG around Andrews, NC which is in a flat valley. But the ZF9 run 70 MPH under 2k RPM in 9th speed. We have a new CR-V Hybrid which comfortably hits upper 30’ to 40’s, so we haven’t utilized the 2020 Ridgeline very much to see how it performs on long freeway runs. The MPG interface operates differently on the 2020 infotainment as compared to my 2019 infotainment. The 2020 infotainment seems more critical in how it calculates MPG.
