can you learn korean without living in korea? | absolute beginner korean tips

Before I moved to Korea I was really reluctant to start studying Korean because I was afraid of learning bad habits for my pronunciation. But guess what? All that happened was that when I moved I could't speak to anybody in my town and I STILL learned bad habits while studying.
Here are some tips for absolute beginners that are worried about not having good pronunciation because they don't have a lot of access to native speakers. You can totally do it! 화이팅~

    these are great tips! i truly believe in the power of native content as a learner. yeah its def harder, but also its extremely real and prepares our brains/ears for whats to come. not everyone is going to talk to us like a beginner friendly video! :') and yesss ive been doing that lately with korean, taking my newly learned grammar points and using new vocab to create sentences! its def helpful bc idk how else to study vocab atp djdjskd

    I think trying to use the vocab I learn in my own sentences is the best way to remember vocab for me... if I study flashcards it feels like I'm learning really quickly, but I won't recognize the vocabulary when it's used in context so it doesn't end up being that useful in the long run😅 if you find a better way to study vocab please let me know, it's my biggest weakness right now and I have SO MANY words to remember ㅠㅠ

    I was intending to study English, but the algorithm guided me to Korean study videos instead. Ironically, it turned out to be very beneficial

    I'm glad my video was useful to you! Maybe some of the tips can apply to studying English while in Korea (and if nothing else, you can use it for listening practice lol)

    As soon as I started learning Korean I wanted to move to Korea but due to the lack of money and research only now (3+ years later) I have finally saved up enough to move to Korea in July. Although I am sad that I didn’t get to move then I am happy that the wait did give me time to learn Korean and now when I move there it won’t be as hard to communicate and make friends.

    Congratulations on finally being able to move! I think needing to wait a few years to save money is a common experience for people wanting to move abroad. I think I waited about 2.5 years after I decided I wanted to move here before I was actually able to come to Korea

    I’ll keep watching the video as I’m curious about your personal experience but I can answer this one for anyone watching. The sooner you start studying the better. Nobody moving to Korea thought “If only I didn’t start studying before I came here!” That said I didn’t get serious about studying a foreign language until I actually left the US and spent some significant time abroad. Motivation is everything and you may not find the motivation until you get to Korea. Some people don’t get motivated even after they go abroad. But start before you go and do whatever you can.

    Lol I know, it's so obvious, right? Of course you should study as much as you can before you go to Korea. I think I was just scared of making mistakes so I made up excuses to procrastinate studying ^^;

    Oh resources… I like the Korean Grammar in Use series the most I think. I’ve purchased lots of books but Korean Grammar in Use for Beginners and the 2nd book for Intermediate are the only ones I’ve consistently used. The others just collect dust. You might think they’re brand new even but they’re really several years old.

    I actually don't have Korean Grammar in Use but I've heard about it a lot. Maybe I should pick it up!

    @@strawberrykimcheekorean The beginner book is just excellent. The intermediate one is good too but they clearly decided to increase the level of the examples using longer sentences with more vocabulary etc. I’ve had the book for years and I’m ok with the increased level now but I think it would have been nice if they gave simpler examples… and then below more detailed examples for students that are more ambitious or advanced. But I really like the pictures they give with the examples.

    Even though I’m a veteran language learner… I have a trip coming up and I want to prepare but speaking is such a hassle. I was telling myself.. don’t worry. You can just practice speaking when you get to Korea 😂. Just read and watch KZread instead (why I’m watching this video). Ugh. I wonder if I can blackmail myself into practicing speaking. I did do a small group speaking lesson for beginners on iTalki today and I can say I need lots of practice 😂

    That's a valid point! However, in my experience, even kid's shows have too high of a level in Korean for beginner learners. If you want to meet your language level, a better listening activity could be a graded listening practice video (these are specifically made for language learners with different language abilities in mind). However, a lot of these videos can be a bit boring ^^; so that's why I chose to watch something that I know is interesting to me, even if it is above my current level ^^
