The 1915s one is made to bring out the higher notes, while the 2018 one is made to make the notes more even. Likely has to do with what kinds of songs people were playing on piano back then.

I love it, the 2018 piano has a much clearer sound which creates an elegant crispness but the 1915 piano has so much character with each metallic clang. Absolutely lovely

@@the_monstah6378 it's the wood, since old pianos have a wooden interior, the wood shrinks or extends depending on temperature, meaning that the hammers get worn out quicker when they are played

I definitely prefer the 1915 piano: more clearly, it has more accented treble and overall sounds more exciting. 2018s is a typical, contemporary, dark-sounding piano.

I think the 1915 isn't subdued enough IMO, it would be hard to play anything where you have to let a melody shine through while keeping other parts subtle (like a lot of Chopin or Debussy).

2018's piano sounds better, but for ragtime the 1915's piano is the best, it really seems to enter in an old saloon

Ragtime is a style of music from the late1800's and early 1900's, invented by black musicians in America. Kind of a precursor to Jazz music, but played almost exclusively on piano. The most famous Ragtime composer was Scott Joplin. Since the style was from the beginning of the last century, and old piano sounds like it fits better that Ragtime style.

1915 piano has a narrow, tin like sound, which is great for ragtime, but not great for most other styles of music. The new piano has a much deeper, more full sound, which allows it to add more emotion to pretty much every musical style other than ragtime.

I feel like it wouldn't have enough control to play a lot of pieces though. Getting something like, say Clair De Lune or Ondine from Gaspard de la Nuit to sound on this piano would not be easy, since it has a really brash tone that can't really be subdued easily. It would also be a lot harder to distinguish between melody and harmony. TBH all I hear in the 1915 piano is a massive pain to play anything with that requires any bit of subtlety.

I have a 1950s (1951 to be exact Baldwin Acrosonic upright and it sounds AMAZING, it has been used so little that it's still in tune when it hasn't been tuned for decades, and I even have the original bench with vintage and/or antique music sheets and books in it and a few modern ones here and there that we put there, both the piano and the bench are in VERY VERY good condition, especially when you consider the fact that it's a little over 70 YEARS OLD, it's 71 years old and still sounds amazing, sure there are a few companies that make amazing pianos, but antique pianos and/or very high end modern pianos sound way better than most modern pianos.

2018 is best with bass, but the 1915 sounds better with treble and ragtime

It sounds sooooo much like my piano teacher’s ancient instrument. I only got to see it a few times when I was 4 and just started taking lessons, the white keys were all yellowish and had little metal studs at the ends.

the wood isn't sound treated, the 2018 piano is shipped out with sound-absorbing materials, so sounds get muted pretty fast, this trend started because in 1915 not that many people had the money for a home piano, in the 40's and 50s this changed so manufacturers started to ship pianos with sound-absorbing materials to better fit a home. in 1915 Pianos like that were mainly found in social clubs, bars, or concert halls, so the sound really didn't matter in those settings

Not as full of a sound, much higher amount of treble or pitch. Some songs and styles just need that classic old sound, but the new one is more pleasant

@@pianotechlife It was just an unfortunate choice of words. It's the clunky sound of the hammer hitting the metal string inside the piano; I can hear it too.

Tbh the sound of the 1915 piano is kinda fragile. It's like the sound of playing only one note on the guitar while the 2018 piano has consistency and feels like it's alive.

1915 is more classic and 2018 more blues

I think the 2018 piano sounded like a MIDI recording. It doesn't have the same character as the 1915 piano.

The notes has much higher treble and less bass due to the aging hardware. While the 2018 one is more smooth, warm and has a comforting surround to it They do sound very different, but deciding which one is the better one is a hard one
