Can you drop in on roller skates without sliders?

Can you drop in on roller skates without sliders? Can you stall on rollerskates without any blocks? Do you need to upgrade your roller skates before you start park skating? Can you stall on the coping or drop in on rollerskates without sliders? If you're wondering, "Do I need special equipment on my roller skates to stall?" In this video, I test it out for you FOR THE FIRST TIME by dropping in and stalling on the coping without any sliders on my roller skates!
I share a little about my roller skate set-ups as I transitioned from roller derby to skate park roller skating in this skate video. If you're interested in learning how to roller skate ramps at the skate park in roller skates (that don't have any fancy upgrades for park roller skating), watch this! I was a beginner roller skater once and I'm passing on my best tips for beginner park roller skaters concerning set-up upgrades. I answer "When should I upgrade my roller skate set-up for park skating?" AND "Is it better to upgrade your set-up for park skating?

    Thank you so much Catherine!! Proud of you, you're even braver than me when I first learned haha. If you want some super secure blocks, I'd check out the Sure-Grip blocks (amzn.to/2S4AoV9), BUT if you want ones that slide good, there are so many options. CIB's shop is down currently but I've heard they're super slidey. I've also got Wildbones sliders myself, but they're on my Moxi skates and I mostly street skate in that set-up. I'm in the market for finding new sliders too, let's let each other know what we get and how we like em haha! I am still deciding myself. I will recommend making sure your skate plate is compatible before purchasing, usually they have a chart to compare and help you decide the side you need or you can email the brand sometimes if you're unsure. Exciting!

    This was actually super helpfull as I've just been thinking of upgrading my setup with some blocks. I skate without them and I don't really have troubles dropping in (I mean sometimes I'm scared, obviously, but I can usually overcome it and do okay.) But stalls on coping....fuu that's hard and I can't quite get the hang of it so far. So I was wondering if blocks may help me...well know I know it's totally possible to stall without blocks and I just need to work harder! Also your miniramp is absolutely awesome and I may be sligthly envious. There are only a few skateparks near me and they are all rather small and not really begginer friendly, just one of them has a halfpipe and the halfpipe is HUGE and so high I can't even like reach the coping haha. Anyways I don't wanna complain, I'm very happy we have any skateparks at all and I just gotta work with what I have :)

    Ehhhhh, im so hesitant with my my nylon carbon fiber composit plates as my derby skates yet im still thrashing them and they cost me way more than a pair off moxie lollies now and i brought them 8 years ago. Their still kicking strong though but i know transition skating is going to kill them the way im progressing. They are made to be light, fast and sturdy yet really agile and not hitting the coping abd concrete with force as with aggressive park skating is really hard to back off once you get use to park skating and get some boggie on the higher stuff. Im stuck at looking after my skates to a point and not going in with my full potential. That sucks when your gear holds you back. Yeah i could put new plates and blocks on them but derby skates basicly dont have a heel and the king pins and axles are at a bigger angel for agilty to get block that will fit right. I park skate regularly already and hit the ramps 3 times a week for some time now but i have to be really mindful to keep the aggressive skate bit to a low raw as if i went in to it as hard as i really want to and am totally ready for, ill snap a plate for sure $$$ it happens. I know my derby skates are really holding me back too, block or no blocks. They are the wrong dog for the wrong job. The no heel thing is just hard work pumping as your flat footed. Everything ive looked in to to do vert, transition and bowl says you need more control on the ball of your foot and thats why you can get heel wedges as a stop gap for derby skates but its bandaids for broken legs. Its NQR. Going in with no blocks is hairy as too when your not on a mini ramp and you can slam your plates preety dam hard when you go up a transition like a 6 foot + half pipe after dropping in off the same hight and if your wheels snag , its a long way down so im saving for new skates because all the mods i was going to do will cost me a shit load and i know that they will never be good transistion and bowl skates anyways as the boot is all wrong. Im biting the bullet because of safty , useablity and price in the end as just a good set of bowl bomber 101a wheels and new bearings all round cost me near or just over $200 for park skating not that long ago just for starters as the derby wheels ive got are just hard work and too grippy. Its like you skating through mud on ramps then your wheels stick on a high carve to face plant is shitty and to then find out nothing will fit off the rack , block wise on my now $$$ purpose built to be light weight derby skates that are stable as, im looking at custom made blocks and new plates and throwing away money. Ive crunched the numbers and to convert my derby skates in to full time transition/ ramp skates , it will cost me about the same price as a pair of bont parkstars with dico blocks and grind trucks as im not going to half ass this and the bonts are made for this stuff, their looking like the winner in this. I so dont want to snap a plate, they cost heaps in the first place and you cant get the same plates i have anymore to replace them to still have them as MY custom derby skates ever again.. The set up is so diffent between park skating and derby skating that im blowing out bushings all the time now. Their great derby skates but they are definitely not vert/ ramp/ bowl skates and never will be perfect for the job. Ive gone ass up and dislocated my elbow and hit my head so hard i got whiplash with safty gear on less than a month ago because there was way to much movement between my wheels on coping only to get heaps of wheel bite trying to get my skates off in a hurry on the top coping on a preety high ramp when ive gone up fakie on a huge half pipe and some idiot snaked me. I had to move fast. You cant bank on people not being idiots because you dont have a good set up. Yeah ouch and yikes. Not advisable. Sorry i just aspied on you but hay , my ASD lets me get right to the bare bones of this " way to in depth " ... lol But this vid has her only on a mini ramp. There is no real fast and hard momentum going on there. Heck, the 3 parks i skate dosent even have a mini ramp and the smallest ive skated is a 6 footer. You cant gauge anything from such a small transition as she is doing. I jump off manny pads higher than her mini ramp to land on concrete and am amazed i still have my skates but its just a race to get the new skakes befor i kill these ones for good. Fingers crossed i get my new skates soon.

    When skating in skateparks, whats the durometer of wheels you use? And for the plates, do you advise having metal than plastic? I have the chaya vintage with 78A wheels, so thinking if it's safe to use that model on skateparks or can changing the wheels be the first step?

  • @Carla-ou2yb

    @Carla-ou2yb

    Softer wheels should be safe but you probably won't get a lot of speed and will get tired easily. I think you should just try it out and then consider upgrading to harder wheels. Softer wheels will give you more grip and less speed so you'll probably feel more secure with softer wheels for now

    Do you have a preference for sliders?

  • @simon_slays55

    @simon_slays55

    4 жыл бұрын

    Good question! I think I used to prefer sliders, now I think you can totally do just as good with or without them, it doesn’t matter much as for if I have them on my skates for just stalls and ramps. I think I’m definitely more used to just my usual set-up more than anything. Here’s a short overview of the blocks/sliders I’ve tried on my rollerskates so far! >>> I've really only had the Sure-Grip Skate Park Grind Blocks (amzn.to/2S4AoV9) the past 1-2 years park skating, and I really loved them because they're so secure and lock on the coping. They are also easy to install and inexpensive. Sure-Grip grind blocks are different than sliders in that they are more BLOCKS than sliders. They are not self-lubricated- meaning if you wanted to slide, you'd have to wax the coping first. I think they're great for beginners/park skaters who are starting out and don't want to slide when they're just trying to stall. I like how they really lock on the coping. >>> I was given a pair of Wildbones Sliders from their logo design contest, I wear like a size 8/8.5 boot (9.5-10 in women’s) so sliders are always super wide because they are larger the larger size you wear. So, when I first tried them after wearing the Sure-Grip blocks, I will say they’re good, but I didn’t feel as secure on them- they are flat across and don’t lock on the coping the same, which takes a little more skill to balance just right as you drop in and stall. But, you can get some slide with them. If you ever do decide to try these too, I did a video on how to install them you can watch here! > “How To Install Wildbones Sliders” (Video Tutorial): bit.ly/2UyOIGX I'd say now that my skill level has reached slides and more difficult tricks/stalls, I do prefer having sliders on my park rollerskates, but I definately enjoyed skating ramps without them. I’m actually in the market for upgrading to a different brand of sliders as I want to slide but can’t really in my Sure-Grip blocks without waxing which I don't want to do and sometimes can be rude to do at public parks. I’m open / researching what sliders I want to try next. I’ll let you know if I get another kind and review them for sure! So we'll see which I try out next! That's my honest experience so far!

    Folx really seem to like big foot sliders as they’re more concave shaped instead of an arch and also slide well. They are custom made to fit the plate and are easier to install/remove than say CIB sliders. I have CIB and like them for versatility but are a bit heavy IMO.
