Can you drive without a front drive shaft? - Removing 4wd front drive shaft - Yukon / Tahoe
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Paging Doctor Hackinslash. Paging Doctor Hackinslash. Your patient is ready in Operating Room 2.
In this video I explore some loud rattle and clank noises under my Yukon. I know the transfer case is broken and the 4 wheel drive is out. So, I wonder if removing the front drive shaft will stop some of the noises and help the truck drive better? Going over bumps occasionally "jolts" the trucks drive train. I show you how I (surgically) remove the drive shaft, take the truck for a spin and give you my impressions of how the truck drives. Do the noises go away?

I just bought a 99 subburban with the 246 and that tranfer case chain had completely ate thru the casing. I had no other choice to by another tranfer case . Chain hanging but still ran. Found another tranfer case for 100bucks now i just need to change my electric motor to the one i just got and put rear and front boots and its ready to roll.

Awesome vid - glad this showed in my feed. I am getting a rebuilt transmission in the FailBlazer!! I promise to stay under 5000 rpm from now on since I have researched the weaknesses of the 3-4 clutch of the 4l60e versus the TB's mighty torque. hahahaha. Maybe I should order another FailBlazer shirt...My first one did not last long - it faded pretty fast and got worn out...
Just did this on my '71 GMC Jimmy K/1500 350V8/SM465/NP205/D44 Front/12-Bolt 3.73 Rear. [My truck would be your truck's ancestor.] Front Prop Shaft has 1 u-joint after D44, then 2 u-joints [Double-Cardan] before the Xfer Case. Had a klunking, noticable during decelleration. I found one clip holding the u-joint bearing cap on the 2nd one had got lost, allowing the cap to open up off the uni and spill bearings. I thought it was a simple u-joint replacement, until I got it loose and found damage inside the Double-Cardan. The hard part was pulling the 4 capscrews [5/16-24 --2''] out of the back of the DC at the transfer case. The boltheads were trapped behind the Xfer Case mount. A hammerhandle thru the open u-joint holes held the DC from spinning. I could get a 1/2'' box end on it and turn the bolt 1/6th turn each time. Took me about 4 hours over 2 days. Afterward I secured the trapped bolt ends with 4 5/16-24 torque nuts, so they would not beat themselves to death while loose. New Prop Shaft is $650 at Jegs or $280 rebuilt from RockAuto. Without the front prop shaft, the Jimmy drives fine in 2WD. Just need the rig to get to work until I can afford to fix it.
@The Daninator if you want to completely eliminate the front differential, take each CV shaft out, take the wheel end boot off and separate the CV shaft knuckle. Take that end and reinstall it into the wheel bearing. Once you have done this to both sides you have fully eliminated the front differential and the noise will completely be gone, assuming your wheel bearings are not bad. Good luck and God Bless.

Thank you for posting this video. My 98 Yukon has a noise coming from the front drive shaft. I believe it's the U-Joint. Unfortunately the U-Joint is very difficult to replace from what I was hearing. I think it's easier to replace the front shaft and call it a day.
The video is good to explain a transfer case and make one on that and I think that will solve your issue
Great intro new sub
You have the NP246 transfer case, they are notorious for pump rub wearing a hole in the case. They also have a bearing in the case for both front and rear driveshafts, the bearings have a plastic retainer that comes apart. Yours probably did and that's what your clicking is. Yes the TC needs worked over, but removing the yoke from it, allows fluid to run out and it will eventually lock up. That hangup was probably the chain not meshing with sprockets. Jeep guys can remove theirs because they have fixed yokes on both ends, not slide ins.

I have an 04 dodge 2500. My transfer case ran dry because of a bad seal and started making noise. In a panic added oil to it and removed my front drive shaft (has a fixed yolk so no fluid leakage there) and the noise has completely went away. Want to get fixed eventually but don’t have the funds lol. My question is do you think it’ll be okay for the time being?
@chubbysumo2230

Can't tell you for sure because those transfer cases do have some issues but it could of been your front diff too. Just see if you can find ways to diagnose the problem. Me personally I would start the easy stuff like taking apart the front diff for a good inspiration and if nothing is there obviously is the transfer case.

The transfer case has a chain drive what you are hearing is the chain slapping eventually the bearings will go bad because there are clutches inside the transfer case had the same thing happen to mind did not drive very long after it lockdown taking the front drive shaft will keep it from locking the front wheels but eventually it is the same gear that drives the back if the chain breaks and is out of the way you will be okay if it gets locked into the drive gear you will be stuck
funny man subscribed!
4 years old now this video I doubt u still have the truck but for all those with this issue ..pull the front cv axles out of the diff as well as the front drive shafts and that is how u truly by pass and transform it from 4 wheel to permanent 2wd
Also you will need to disconnect the front dif completely

By the way you can pick one up from Pull-A-Part for 70 bucks $10 for the back seal and about six bucks for the front gasket doesn't have to be perfect if you're not going to use for a drive just make sure it doesn't have leaks through the casing which is why they go bad the pump there's a hole in the bottom of the case

Well, on my 2003 gmc 2500 diesel Duramax and she’s been rode hard and put away wet man! 350,000 miles and there’s one hell of a clunking And clicking going on as well. Except when I climbed underneath I discovered that the gears in my transfer case have eaten all the way through the outer case itself 😱 I figured I didn’t need that front driveshaft but what I’m wondering is do I even need to transfer case at all??
mine had went out not to long ago, the planetary gear blew apart in it and just destroyed the rest of the transfer case. most of the time all this is caused my lack of lubrication!
Interesting video I had a 1986 VW Syncro [all wheel drive] Vanagon. [2,200 cc water-cooled flat four] Came time to replace the 4 half shafts. Driving only with the rears wheels turning corners was a bear. The Vanagon did not want to complete any turn right or left. It was hard to keep it out of the roadside ditch. Driving only with the front wheels, control was about normal. Driving with all 4 CV shafts the Synco system was fine.
First guys keep your differential filled with 75-90 synthetic you might have to replace a seal or two

Would this work on a full-time 4 wheel drive jeep grand Cherokee with a bad front diff.?
Of course you can drive without a front drive shaft. My transfer case had a hole and all the fluid leaked out. Since there was no fluid in the transfer case, it started to make a whining noise. Didn't know there was a hole until it was inspected. Remove front drive shaft. Still runs without problems.

Yep and you can remove the rear drive shaft and drive with only the front one, you have to be in 4hi and of course you shouldn’t do this unless you don’t care about the truck, I bought a 02 suburban for 400 because the rear differential somehow got a hole in it when the previous owner was 4 wheeling in mud, he said I’d have to tow it, I got the keys from him hopped in, started it, put in 4hi and drove off, transmission had issues too, only went in 1st and 2nd and rarely 3rd, after a couple months of driving it like that just around town the rear differential started making a horrible noise, removed rear drive shaft and problem was solved, kept driving it another few months until I moved out of state and let my brother have it to do whatever with, he left it sitting for awhile and it got towed but that thing would’ve kept driving like that for a long time, pretty crazy, nice work Chevy

Pulling the front driveshaft will not fix a messed up case. The transfer case itself still spins, it's just not engaged in 4wd. It would work if it were an electric 4wd and the motor or switch was bad. But not if the case itself was clanging and banging.

nope, single chain, only for the front. These transfer cases have the rear wheels always powered, and the input shaft from the trans goes straight thru the tcase to the output shaft for the rear axle. If it has a low range, it has a floating output shaft, a collar, and a set of spider gears to change the range for both front and rear at the same time. If it has no low range, then the input shaft is solid straight thru to the rear axle output. there are numerous breakdowns of these on YT.
