Man...this run feels a *lot* more juxtaposed with Donovan's Blade & the Scythe. I mean, it could also be a "Can You Beat Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment without using your Weapon", cause...the reasonings behind it feel...weak. I'm not trying to like a jerk, but as someone who watched the other two runs (You even hearted my comments on those two), I felt this one didn't...fully convince me.

This run feels more like the megaman pacifist runs: how much are you required to use the scythe to beat spectre of torment. Because of the final boss requiring rail grinding, the most strict definition of no scythe is definitely impossible. You just have to decide if you're willing to be lenient or want to write it off as a no.

I mean, there are 2 options here. Either accept the technicality, or don't. This was made to show if it was possible to go without the scythe and I believe this answers it either way. You accept that it "isn't a scythe", and the run is possible. Or not. No one honestly wanted this video to be cut short because of rails.

There's actually a code that gives you the Rail Mail from the start and makes you start grinding anytime you land on something. It also gives you super speed when you grind. It's pure insanity and I love it.

@@Volcanic_Rave It's not a normal run though, he didn't succeed in beating it with out using the scythe, but he did succeed in beating it with out hurting any enemies with the scythe That is impressive. However to be fair, he should have called it 'With out hurting enemies with the scythe' or 'How many times do you have to use the scythe' but that would break the theme of the three videos, seeing as the other two videos where fully successful with not using the other two's primary forms of attacking

I would say its not possible, and instead call it "what is the least scythe usage needed", to me, the Donovan set is just an excuse, as it works exactly like the default scythe.

Fair argument. I think there are some surprising differences in the visual design to distinguish the two - but ultimately by comes down to preference. I’m amazed so much of the game is beatable without it in the first place - maybe the amiibo will prove it all possible, without technicalities

Or without opening your inventory at all... (It's possible, the Dye Shop make it easy to change clothes and even without you can get enough weapon power to beat all the ganons. Just make sure you break your bow before DBG, or it's game over)

No. No it isn't. You need bomb arrows to beat Vah Medow and Vah Naboris, something that isn't bombs to beat Vah Ruta, and the light bow to beat Ganon.

I think using donavan armor as an excuse isn't exactly fair, since by that logic just going through all of the game with it technically counts as beating a challenge without a scythe.

Actually, Dark Reize is completely possible without slashing your weapon. All you have to do is use the lantern barrier curio (or whatever it's called). I think it's even possible to take him out before the long jump, but I'm not sure. Edit: I haven't tried that in the normal mode, I did it in New Game+, not sure if the rest of the game is possible in this mode.

Happy 2 year anniversary! Shovel Knight is definitely and always will be one of my favorite games of all time!❤️

This series is why i got shovel knight, and which is also how i discovered hollow knight, so thank you for helping me discover my 2 favourite games of all time

I was waiting for this for so long

so it's basically pointless then. If you say the donovan set doesn't count as using the scythe then there's literally no challenge to the run, you can just do literally the entire game as normal and say you never used it then. It completely removes any aspect of a 'challenge run' from the concept. I think what would've been better and more satisfying is if you went through and calculated the minimum number of times you have to use the scythe in the run and tried to get that number as low as possible. not every one of these challenges that have become popular lately is 100% successful, but it's still cool to see a game beaten with the minimum number of something instead. So I would've liked it more if you admitted defeat and tried to minimize scythe usage. But instead this just amounts to "can you beat the game by playing it completely normally, but with a slightly different sprite set?"

You said you had trouble with the fish in treasure knight's stage? Use 2 claw attacks to kill it. It gives a lot of gold, too, which is always a plus.

I love the chaotic approach to the "rules" on this one, addressing the challenge with the "spirit of the law" and not necessarily the "letter of the law". I used to think these sorts of challenges were a bit silly, but here I am actually intrigued. ;D

Now this is awesome 3 videos of shovel knight treasure trove and the characters without using their main weapon.

Why are you not counting the flashbacks as a part of the challenge because of what he's wearing but still count it as a scythe when your wearing the same outfit in normal levels? I get that the flashbacks are impossible without scythe but it felt like you were giving a poor exuse

Because he literally doesn’t have a scythe back then - the later cutscenes show him get it later. In the play, we can talk about it being a reskin despite some animations shifts or what have you - but he’s not specter at that point and doesn’t get the scythe until the enchantress

You should have used the raiment of risk more. Once you break a checkpoint, you are given infinite magic regeneration, which I'm certain would have made most levels much easier.

Jumpless is possible. No dashing normally (I am pretty sure) is impossible No dashing in New game plus is insane.

Fun thing about NG+ mode, certain curios can continue to be used even when your darkness is reduced to 1, like my personal favorite, the DREAD TALON.

The Donovan armor technicality is the equivalent of playing tag and being like “I touched your shirt so that counts”

You absolute madman you did it

When the enchantress is below the stage you can use the spider scythe in the corner to get good damage on her

"And got plenty frustrated with this stupid unkillable fish." The "unkillable fish" can bbe killed with 2 dread tallon strikes.

New game plus could actually make this run significantly _easier,_ in a way. Your darkness/will slowly drains, however, it will never fall below one. At this point, the Judgement Rush, Hover plume, and Chronos Coin become unusable, but every other curio can be used free of charge, as much as you like. As long as you don't take any damage...

You can actually use precise damage boosts to skips some of the trickier sections (like the book room). And the judgement rush can be used to renew your wall run, if no enemies are onscreen.

While I think the run should have ended on the technicality it was still a good video as always, can't wait to see what challenge runs you do in the future

Huh, for my purposes I guess the answer is no, but that’s another intense run. You reminded me that I need to mess around with the risk suit. And I’m sure you got a lot of flak for the Donovan suit but I appreciate that you used it minimally and still made it a curio dependent run

I loved this DLC when I played it, with the fast paced gameplay. If I could choose another knight to play as, I would choose the gyroscopic jester himself, propeller knight.

Next challenge: Can you beat king of cards without being a selfish jerk.

Just a tip, the claw can kill that huge fish in Treasure's stage. It takes two hits and a hefty amount of darkness, though, and make one wrong move and it respawns, so use at your discretion.

Bruv, I get you were worried about breaking the rules, but you could have pulled the curtains over my head and started the video with "Donovan set, yo! let's knife these lanterns!" And I wouldn't have felt cheated. The fact that despite being forced the use that particular technicality on occasion, you still managed to beat it with such a limited pool of darkness and tools. That speaks magnitude to your skill and commitment to the original challenge. WELL MET STT! WELL MET!

Even though there's an Asterisk in the final conclusion at least you show us which parts you /have/ to use the scythe/knife , interesting to see how much you CAN do without slashing or swinging or grinding. Grinding with the scythe was one of my favourite game mechanics but I often found myself sailing straight towards a pit...

Fun fact about the big fish in Treasure Knight's stage, you actually *can* kill it. And no I dont mean with the anchors. The talon curio actually is able to do damage, though it's around 3 hits to bring it down.

Fun fact: Most curios can be used infinitely in NG+, costing no darkness if you have none left. ...Unfortunately, two of the three exceptions to to this are the judgement rush and the hover plume. PS.: a relatively simple way would be to just use the raiment of risk and spam the will skull as soon as you get even a scrape. You just have to not die too.
