If this helps any, since you have access to Thief’s abilities, you could steal a Reflect Ring from one of the Reflect Mages. Also, move your Ranger to the Back Row. ExDeath can be quite a wall for Solo runs.

The damage formula includes (strength x level) so leveling up DOES increase your damage. It should be an extra point of M every 2-3 levels, or in English, ~45 more damage every 2-3 levels against Exdeath. Grinding up to mastering ranger would also unlock !Rapidfire, which deals double the damage of a normal attack while also ignoring defense. That, along with the reflect ring (rare steal from a reflect mage is probably best, common from Carbuncle if you find you can win with !Rapidfire, and rare drop from Reflect Knights back in the now inaccessible Barrier Tower if you're masochistic enough to load an old save/restart) may just be enough. Your damage ranges have been showing you have the bow hidden in this castle equipped, which IS the best weapon available to you as a ranger for now. Your damage also shows you not having the Twist Headband, Power Sash, or Power Armlet equipped. I'm advising the Reflect Ring over the Power Armlet, sure, but each of those equips give +3 strength, which, at level 50, is a point of M each. (Again, ~45 per attack more per equip.) The level required may be pretty impractical, especially with how slow leveling up is if when you are already level 50, but !Rapidfire along with the equipment changes would get you a lot closer before you spend 20 hours grinding levels.

Doing this with each CRYSTAL is a little weird. You find all 4 crystals during the first half of the game, so 50% of your run is the earth crystal. Maybe you can space out the changes a little differently if you do this again?

Fun video! Love this game and know way too much so I can offer some advice. First, some things you got wrong: Level does increase damage, however it usually takes several levels depending on your stats due to the way the damage formula rounds numbers. Also, equiping the magic ability from X class also transfers the magic stat. So equiping max time magic would increase your magic to be equal to a main class time mage. Second, for Exdeath: The common strategy from a guy that has solod the game with every class(except white mage) is to equip Bone Mail and a reflect ring. Once his hp gets low enough he'll only cast magic which gets reflected back at him. So for your case, you can steal a reflect ring from the reflect mages on the second level of the tower(where the illusion gets dispelled). Then you could sit in the back row and use XFight/Rapidfire on Ranger or Time Magic to get him low as fast as possible while mostly negating his physical attacks. Additionally, if your level is divisible by 3, he will cast LVL 3 Flare which also gets reflected. That said, I only play the GBA and Mobile versions, so I don't know if PR has changed anything weird. Best of Luck!

@@azuremistkingdom Heck yeah! In particular FFV I believe has a pretty strong community still thanks to Four Job Fiesta. Lot's of places online with people addressing weird and hyper specific class interactions and strategies, even for the optional super bosses(which imo with your jobs in this run you could probably do Shinryu but not Omega, he's nuts)

I was going to do the 4 job fiesta initially, but its been done a lot, so i changed it up a bit and did this run instead. Never did a solo run before so i figured let's give it a go! Such a different playing experience. @@Nasgatemk2

honestly out of all the final fantasy games ive played, The battle on the big bridge is probably one of my favorite moments in the series. just everything from Galuf leaving the castle to solo Exdeaths castle to free the party to brute forcing through an army while accompanied by the track is just a recipe for perfection

@@azuremistkingdom that actually threw me off quite a bit actually, I legit tried to heal over then when i realized Galuf wouldn't die because determination i just went ham as a samurai. FFV is really something else, if it isn't one thing after another its memorable bosses, the mystery of the different worlds which makes sense why they're like that. FFVI has its moments but its much darker than it is epic in terms of scenes, and i will say Kefka is one of the first villians to successfully destroy the world, just amazing the partys connection with one another really makes you understand them and connect with them all throughout the game. im glad i paid $70 for the pixel remaster collection, im not glad that console got the boosts while steam didnt (so much for no gil drop challenge runs)

I still remembered the first time i played ff5 in 1998 using a snes emulator with a translated ff5 rom. Played it on a intel celeron 333 mhz and 64mb or ram. 😅

My advice for Exdeath: As others said, grab a wall ring. Normally this is done in the tower with Atmos, the reflect knights drop it, but since you can steal you van grab em' from reflect mages, too. It's critical for the second phase of Exdeath, so use it. After that, master your ranger. His final ability skyrockets your damage potential, so with some elixir usage you should be able to muscle through the first phase eventually. Oh, and Cure Rabbits drop elixirs, if you need to grind for more of them. Good luck, I hope you can make it through the Exdeath wall, he's a real challenge for solo FF5 runs!

Sad to see that you couldn't get to the end, but I love this idea for a challenge and am going to try it myself. Maybe not solo but there are classes I never use that might be better than I thought.

I think a challenge of you must use each class once before the game is over. Mime included Also after awhile ranger isn't good for most bosses. Unless you get the bows from the third world

I see a lot of comments are already inputting things for Exdeath, so I don't feel the need to add much more to it. I admire your attempt and getting as far as you did. This is not an easy game for solo challenges. But if you'd like to have specific strategies, tips, or ideas, I have quite a bit of knowledge for FF5 specifically - although the Pixel Remaster does have quite a few differences to the SNES/GBA versions I may not be entirely familiar with. Plus, the ATB in this game not stopping for when you get your turn is my biggest pet peeve about that version in particular. It makes enemies get 2-3 turns instead of 1 while you're inputting your own commands sometimes FF5 is particularly heavy on knowledge with a variety of classes. It's one of those games, where I think it's a lot more interesting to know what all the abilities and jobs can do, as well as what the bosses in particular do, and then build strategies around it. But - that may just be me Beastmaster can be one of the most powerful jobs, if you know how to use it well. Ranger has by far the highest single target damage output, and Thief allows you to acquire a variety of helpful items along the way via stealing (again, if you know where to look) The easiest, although maybe not fastest way to beat Exdeath would be: - In the underwater cave where you found the turtle that gave you the branch to enter the forest of Moore, there are Metamorpha enemies. They have a 1/16 chance to drop a Staff of Light, which you can break as a Time Mage to cast Holy for about 4000+ damage, depending on your level. If you'd like to stay as a Hunter, you could master Time Mage and get the "Equip Rod" ability as the final one, which allows the Hunter to equip Rods AND staves (Although, at a severely reduced damage potential, since it does not transfer Magic Power). Also - your rules read "No using rods" - it's technically a staff, which is a different category of items :) Speaking of transferring stats: If you attach the various magic job like !White/!Black/!Blue/!Time/!Red to a character, they will gain a portion of the magic power from the magic casting class. So, you would in fact have a lot of magic power even as a Hunter... Although, that would not help you with the Comet or Meteor spells, since they have a fixed damage range, and don't scale with magic power or levels Alright... I'm going to stop typing... I already meant to just congratulate you on getting as far as you did, and I just couldn't stop myself from typing up the rest anyways Have a nice day :)

I'll add points as I watch but I am def curious to see how this goes. If there is a VOD I haven't watched it so any comments will purely be on what is shown in this vid and only as I watch through it, even if it is later contradicted. 1. I noticed early on an issue that could've made your life easier would've been if you had gone for the Elven Mantle in Castle Walse. Because damage avoided, is damaged that never has to be healed. While sure I can understand the difficulty of getting it, your first job was starting off as a thief after all, and that meant faster speed to get through and easier ability to run. I know you said you had trouble but honestly that's just more an RNG thing, and even if you waited/grinded, it still could've made other stuff easier up until now tbh. You also missed out on the Speed spell from the same place. 2. On a similar note, getting Time Mage as your second option is a great thing in a limited job run like this. Time Magic has spells that almost entirely ignore your stats when calculating them. A couple might, but for the most part, you can slap Time on any physical job and be *just* as effective as you would be 'as' a Time Mage. ESPECIALLY for Comet and Meteor later on. But also Slow and Old (if you can get em to hit) kinda go along with what I said before: Damage avoided (via the enemy not taking an action and/or having their stats reduced) is damage that doesn't need to be healed. 3. I do feel like something that also could've helped would be if you either mastered or nearly mastered each job before unlocking the next, simply due to the fact of how useful the stat boosts when attaching abilities to other jobs as secondary skills, can be. Unless I am somehow misunderstanding your ruleset that is. 4. Surprisingly, despite it's rather low outright offense, Beastmaster can be an insanely good job in the right hands, downright busted in some cases. There's too many examples to list, but the sheer amount of abilities you can get or use off of captured monsters can be bonkers. It does require looking at a guide tbh, but you can turn SO many bosses into a one-hit kill or make em insanely easy in the right circumstances if you get a good monster to unleash on em beforehand, doubly so once you get the Kornago's Gourd to make it easier to capture. Hell even just controlling a monster in normal battles is helpful to simply turn the enemies against each other. Also if memory serves, Whip weapons have a chance to paralyze. 5. Yes, the Sandworm's attack also inflicts Sap, but you killed it so fast it didn't really matter. 6. Soul Cannon's Launchers just attack with missiles, they aren't the same as the Rocket Launcher enemy. It also helped for you to have the Angel Ring and the Blitz Whip, you were basically immune to everything it could do that was actually any real danger. 7. Honestly getting Ranger as your fourth job was one of the better options (though tbh all of them had their positives). Biggest thing to remember is that it's a long-ranged job, so keeping it in backrow is the best. But it's abilities are all useful, even the Animals command simply because it can offer you a variety of attacks AND heals for no real cost to you, including the insanely useful Unicorn at high levels. But most of all, X-fight/Rapid Fire is insanely good skill which has you attack 4 times at the cost of half damage (which evens out to being two attacks at double damage, essentially) but more importantly four chances at any extra effects a weapon might have too. 8. My thought process on when games force you to "break" a challenge is that the *spirit* of the challenge is still there. Everyone understands that the game's design forces you to break your own rules, but the foundation is still there. You'd have to either restart and use Galuf instead, or mod the game. So I get your feelings but I think it's fine, you aren't bending your own rules because you are trying to make it easier, you're breaking them because otherwise the run ends there. 9. For fighting Exdeath there's a few things can help: Flame Ring, Aegis or Ice shield (if you could use em though your job options didn't allow it), and casting Float. Those couple things alone can help mitigate a lot. Toss on Regen to counter his Sap as well. 10. Another option would be to steal a Judgment Staff from another monster in the castle and equipped it to yourself as a Time Mage while using Rapid Fire. It's Holy elemental, which ExDeath is vulnerable to, and that would cause tons of damage a hit for only a single round of attacks. IMO this is probably the most likely way you could beat him. 11. You also could've just simply grinded to a high level in the basement of Bal Castle by farming the statue enemies down there. They come in pairs or groups of 5. They can be insta-killed with Soft/Gold Needle. And they give excellent gil, EXP, and AP for this point in the game. Eventually through sheer grind you probably could get enough HP to tank him long enough to finish him off. 12. IMO I feel your rules were a bit *too* constraining. In most limited job runs I see (including ones I've done) they allow you to switch jobs, but only between the ones chosen, including solo runs. So I feel like if you were a bit more open on that and grinding out more abilities for the others, you could've definitely had this in the bag. Still it was a good go of it I'd say, you just needed a bit more oomph/options but I feel it *is* doable otherwise. Edit: Also how would you have Meteor at this point in the game? Do you mean Comet? Cuz like stated Comet (and most Time Mage abilities) don't use your stats for calculation. So Comet (and Meteor later on) deal damage purely based on RNG and the enemy's stats, yours do not play into it at all.

Thanks for all the info. I would consider myself novice knowledge level on FF V. For challenge runs I like to try and to them blind, and ill only try to look up stuff if i get stuck/walled. With FF5 the community has been overwhelmingly positive on how to try and get past Exdeath, its been a real treat. I'll return to this in the future to see if I can down this bozo.

@@azuremistkingdom Sounds good there. Like I said I feel the Judgment Staff + Rapid Fire might be your best option. I don't have the rough idea of what kinda damage it'd do and don't have the time atm to reinstall the game and play through to that point to find out. If this was a regular Four Job Fiesta/chaos run and you got Beastmaster I would tell you to just capture four Shield Dragons, but that's not really an option for a solo run.

Actually Rapid fire works on ALL weapons BUT the Staff/Rod based ones it also doesn't work for the Twin Lance's 2x hits so you won't get 8 hits out of that weapon.

Fun video! Though I think there' more that could be done. Level in FF5, because the stats are static per character and class Level plays a large role in determining damage dealt. For many physical attacks like Swords and Axes the multiplier is WeaponAttack*(Level*Strength/128+2), meaning with the right set up and a few more levels the difference in damage is quite stark.

I believe you can finish it. Might want a reflect ring which can be stolen in the tower. Probably need to level up some (a lot of solos need in the mid 40's to 50 for Castle Ex Death also need to pray he doesn't hit you with condemn when his script resets I believe every 10th turn.) Solo runs are typically pray to the rng for good rolls.)

According to a Solo Class Challenge guide I found, not only is there a bow in Exdeath's Castle that can give you a chance to use Rapidfire (Ranger's final ability that does four attacks at half power), but Rapidfire itself ignores defense. Also you need a Reflect Ring equipped while in the back row.

Ffx2 is in my top 3, the combat system is incredible, same with the music ❤️

don't forget the power of grinding erlier classes to mastery, since they carry over to new class! You just need to be "ready perfectly" and there's a lot you can do, judging by other chads comments! and by levelling up your hp increases to a point where regen can heal by lots and all you really need to pay attention to would be the %damage, curable with a elixir! You can do it man, don't give up!

When youu pick a secondary class the stat bonuses follow you over no matter the class so the ranger with meteor will actually be viable but not sure if enough to beat exdeath sadly

It's not viable. You can't get meteor until World 3.

So I know from speedruns that he was susceptible to Old. Old is a Time Magic spell which you can buy in Moore. Thing is the Wiki specifically says he can be inflicted by the Blue Mage version in the text, however does not list it as resistant. If that worked, you could possibly just outlast him until he does piddly damage. Incidentally since you're playing on the PR version there's no Advanced jobs anyway. Also I think your method of rolling Bard and Ranger in with the other four was....not what I would consider (I would have rolled all five and just waited if you got one of those two....still it's your challenge). As for Galuf, as usual it's fine to get through however you needed, since that you're playing a Bartz solo.

Unfortunately he can *only* be hit with the Blue Mage version of old, since Lv. 2 Old penetrates any resistance to it (blue magic is busted like that). Exdeath is immune to the time magic version of it.

Siren (both forms) has the 'heavy' tag so an elixir on her undead form would have done nothing. Also, NO ONE is imune to slow. Status can be resisted through level and Magic evasion, but if you inflict slow, it holds until form change. The rocket launchers can't be lost to if you mastered Time Mage. With Equip Rod and a healing staff, neither they nor you can kill yourself. Carbuncle alternates between shielded and unshielded. When unshielded, you can one shot him with the Killer bow. He uses 3 spells on himself when shielded, then changes form to unshielded, then uses cura on himself, then changes back to shielded and loops back to the start. Wait until you see cura and hit him with your bow.

I'm not a challenge runner of any kind but I see the fun in most of them. Single character challenge runs though seem like a special flavor of pain.

Facts

x-fight can do about 2800 a round to ExDeath at least if your level is in the 40s or so. Each X-fight strike does 1/2 damage but each attack hits through armor which means high def foes like ExDeath still take good damage from it.

Player named Sulla did a bunch of final fantasy 5 solo class runs. You should look him up to get some strategies

18:26 Wait...the Chocobo wants KFC? Does that count as cannibalism? 24:25 I guess they changed the way that attack works in the Pixel Remaster, since normally it's just 50% of your current HP + Confuse.

By the way, there's a few ways you could definitely get through World 2 Exdeath - I can almost guarantee you can dish out plenty of damage with Rapid Fire if you're willing to go that route, and a Reflect or Flame Ring could provide protection during the second phase if you have either of those. If you don't...well, considering you have time magic, you can still have the speed advantage. Just saying, this should definitely be doable. If there's other stuff you need to know, I could probably help further?

@NovemberJoy appreciate the advice. I've tried the rapid fire, and it's about 630dmg per arrow, but if I use that then I can't have time mage secondary for haste. It was suggested that I can try to use old age on ex death and I'll have to give that a try when I pick this back up. I would need to buy the flame ring if I can get out of the castle.

@@azuremistkingdom Being able to deal like 2500+ damage per round is more than enough firepower for World 2 Exdeath with a little luck, I've found that out from others. Sadly, I don't think you can actually inflict Old on him without Level 2 Old, which is a Blue Magic spell. I would definitely recommend a Flame Ring, that much is certain. If you're concerned about the elixir count, you can farm them in world 2 off of "Cure Beast" encounters. I'd like to see you return to this and get that hard-fought win!

As others has correctly stated, reflect ring is the key to winning that battle. Having a thief, you can just walk outside the room and grab one. Then you just have to chop some 9000ish hp, release the dragon and then heal and defend until ExDeath kills himself. That battle is a pain in many solo class challenges. Unless you are one of those super classes, like Blue Mage. Than you can just troll the guy

Maybe in the future should you decide to revisit this particular challenge you could change job's after every boss instead of just every crystal

That would certainly open up the avenues for the abilities i would have access too and help prevent some possible boss walls.

I would try using time wizard with quick + meteor. That might have the dps you need to beat him. Good luck!

That can work BUT Shinryu/Omega pretty much take CRAP for damage against ANY spells Meteor included that and its a world 3 only spell same with Quick.

I don't think your time mage idea would work, since you still wouldn't have access to Meteor. You can only get that spell in world 3, after beating Exdeath here. The other comments' idea of rapid fire with a reflect ring sound a lot more feasible.

"Final Fantasy V is the game that I would consider the precursor to one of my favourite Final Fantasies, Final Fantasy 10-2" is probably the sexiest sentence known to mankind

If you were to redo this challenge, maybe make Galuf your one dude? Then whenever the game makes you play as him, it won't leave you with a level 1 character

Max out the ranger class and get x-fight (quad attack) it would certainly help

Tough break on this one. I'm sure you'll come back and try again with the reflect ring that everyone's suggested. I do have a question for you, though. Your last few runs, you've had a "No Mods" rule, which I get for a lot of cases. The exp boost option in the pixel remasters, which it looks like you're playing, would make that offscreen grinding a lot faster for you. Why not use it?

Not a bad idea at all.

You wouldn't be able to use Meteor anyway, it's a world 3 spell.

To bad you couldnt use the monk with rapid fire and kaiser knuckles.

THAT would depend on the JOB used for a Solo run but while LV 5 death can work on some world 1 to 3 bosses on a SOLO run its a impossible to LEARN spells but Solo Berserker is nearly impossible.

Also X death first form END game has a instant kill attack + it Petrifies you game over if that happens Neo X death can use Grand Cross and like FF9s final boss when Neo X death uses GC it can cause practically ever status ailment in game and it still works WITH a Free Lancer/Dancer with a Ribbon equipped so theirs really no way to prevent Grand Cross other then ENDING the Neo X death battle before its used. Omega/Shinryu are hard enough to kill with a FULL party so Solo their nearly impossible.
