Private Kowalski could have won the entire war by himself yet he just stays at the war memorial, perhaps having his brother die showed him the human element of war and thus stopped him.

If he has explosives tagged, that implies he's be trained to use them. To me, that means that it would be okay to use explosives in the run.

I think the random door sound was from the other Kowalski going through one of the gates in Freeside. From my experience, the game doesn’t have distance scaling on the volume of that sound effect.
