Yes, I think it was a street-smart budget. Easy too see where he saves money, he eats street food, and doesn't go to more expensive restaurants, and he "only" goes out 2 times a week to a bar. Here in Norway, renting an apartment would have cost far more than his entire budget.

Seems like biggest expense is Nightlife, or getting drunk, your better off buying a bottle of Beer or Vodka at the Big C and relaxing at home rather then going to a bar, big savings right off, or simply not drinking. Majority of expenses are standard costs and it varies person to person, you could cook at home and cut some costs or else eat out at pricey restaurants and increase costs, depends on your budget. Great video Denis.

Hey there, how are you? Agreed, The most expensive part of life here is the nightlife. Nightlife is just something special in Bangkok, so it's easy to get caught up in clubbing every night. I went through that in my first year. Now, I'm lucky enough not to drink, and I'm happy to say Bangkok is affordable, haha.

Hey Denis, thank you so much this is very insightful & eye opening! Just a few questions: 1) Instead of renting a whole apartment can we rent a single room only? 2) When you are an employee in Thailand, are you provided medical/health insurance coverage? 3) MRT/BTS/Bus system - how much do they cost a month / is there a card & are they easily accessible? 4) If there's no gym facility or if we want to go for other fitness/sports activities like yoga, tennis, boxing - are they more pricy? I think the rent was what that surprised me the most. The cost of cocktails are almost the same where I am(luckily I am not a frequent drinker😅)

Hey Sam, happy to hear from you and looking forward to answering you as best as I can. I've never heard about renting a single room, even though I lived like that back in Europe. I would suggest renting a whole condo; you can find much cheaper places in different localities. You can easily find a studio for 4000-5000 baht, but not in the center of Bangkok. Yes, when I was an employee, I had medical/health insurance. You can find all kinds of sports here; for example, I have yoga, Zumba, and pilates included in my gym membership. Thailand is pretty affordable if you're not a drinker, haha. If you have any questions, let me know in a message on my Instagram; I'm happy to help you out with anything.

All the numbers below are in Thai Bhat. to convert to USD, divide by 35. 1) yes but generally, you will end up paying about 10k/mo for reasonable studio. You can find older studios, for 5-8K/mo but they go really fast. 2) depends on the employer. Generally reputable companies do provide health insurance to age 65. Some smaller companies/schools do not. 3) I spend about about 500-1000/mo on the BTS system for a 4km commute. I walk it sometimes just for a change.

If you are younger than 50 you need to figure out the way to get a long stay visa. It can vary from being less expensive but not quite legal (student visas, for example, they may check your regular attendance and if you are not attending classes regularly then you may get into a trouble) to quite expensive options like Thai Elite Visa (it requires a serious lump sum investment). Visa related stuff can seriously affect your budget.

  • @denis.thailand

Interesting point of view. I would suggest visiting Thailand to see your own spending; it's hard to tell. With my own lifestyle, I wouldn't even be able to spend 3k USD a month, even if I wanted to. With 3k USD, which is 100k baht a month, you can live a really good life here, but it still depends on the person. For some people, 3k USD is not enough due to the standard of living, while for others, it's an amount they can't spend. From my 5 years living here, I've learned that the most expensive part of life is alcohol and nightlife, and it's easy to fall into this addiction.

25,840baht for a 'good' life in Bangkok? You must be joking. I rented in Bangkok for 14 years at different apartments/neighborhoods, and I am NOT a drinker. I lived in very modest Thai apartments with reasonable access to BTS/MRT in 35sqm studio apartments. A REALISTIC income for having a 'good' life in Bangkok is 55,000baht minimum. People who like to party can easily blow through 10,000baht EASILY in a single weekend - I saw it all the time. You are going to be very unhappy if you try to live on 25-30K baht a month in Bangkok - chok dee!

Many people lose all their savings when they become addicted to attention. Ladies and nightclubs are everywhere, and I know from my own experiences; I've been struggling with this for a few months. But you have my 100% support in making this decision; it's worth it! I've been blessed enough to have had this opportunity earlier, and I regret not trying to get here sooner.
