Can We Hold A Pro's Wheel On The Toughest Cobbles?
Спорт
What does it take to keep up with a pro on the toughest cobbled sections of the famous Paris-Roubaix course? We sent Conor and Hank to find out! And we didn't just find any pro, they're taking on Belgian Lawrence Naesen - who has been a World Tour pro for over 6 years with the likes of AG2R and the now named Lotto DSTNY, and practically grew up on the cobbles...

a ride with Tomeke on the flanders cobbles!
Geez didn't expect a pro racer to be so different. Look at his form. Hardly looks tucked in and calm as doing 600w dropping poor conor after minutes into the ride. Looked like a leisurely sunday ride for him.

I read your comment before watching the video and... Wow! You weren't kidding. He looked like the T-1000 while the Hank and Conor looked like they had a massive headwind, while they were actually drafting behind him. What a beast!

Also genetics filter out people. Just because people can ride a bike for 7 hours a day doesnt mean that they can develop anywhere near the FTP or VO2 of the best professionals

Both Connor and Hank are ex pros, very good amateurs I'd say. But yes, even more amazing that they're comparing guys that used to be able to race like that and have had a bit of time out of pro peloton.

Great to hear you enjoyed it! We love making content like this 🙌 Anything else we should film?
"My body's deserted me!" I know that feeling. My body deserted me years ago and still hasn't come back.
Doing that in the wet and cold in the middle of a big bunch must be terrifying
we are always so impressed by how fast pros ride all this race. and how hard it is ... far more impressed I am guessing how the riders in the early 20th century did this, how they SURVIVE this... I love cobble races to watch but I HATE ride them even for just 500 meters... do that race on a bike from 1909 😂
Love it, when he said, " where did they go!!!" Great video.
Amazing how effortless it looked for him as opposed to Hank and Connor looking all in.

What struck me even more in We Ride Flanders is how the average Belgie descents on cobbles. They are different. On the flats and uphill, yes it‘s hard, 380W just to keep moving at times but on the descents nobody seems to care that wet cobbles are slippery and hard.
@jacksonmah90

Gentlemen, you are real troopers. Great job on the tarmac and especially the pave!
Great Video series Hank and Connor on Roubaix!!!
Good effort guys.
Top notch on pro rider, beauty of the sport how humble athletes can be
4:03 I can't get over the size of the head tube on connors bike. 😂
Great content, always like to see what the pros can do
Enjoyed the smiles
Great effort guys! Ya did old GCN proud!😁
Cool video, it would have been nice to see the speed next to the power.
Love this one...That is why we watch the pro's...unbelievable.
Connor gets almost no drafting benefit from sitting behind these guys. What a monster. He’d be everyone’s favorite in a group ride. The human armchair. Respect to them for doing this.
@morosis82

You'd be surprised, I'm 6'6" and can get a decent amount behind someone a lot shorter. Not as much obviously but still a decent amount.
Watching you all and seeing cillian do the same. Cobbles must be a very rough, ride. Good show fun to watch.
You’re awesome - super inspiring, you should be proud!!! More videos by Cilian please 🙏 🎉😊
That Scott bike is lovely would love that myself
that was fun but also excellent content - getting an inside look at what it takes to be competitive in a modern peloton on the pavé was very instructive. The power output was ridiculous - Lawrence apparently has a ham stuffed down each leg of his cycling tights. Fair play to Hank and Conor, as ever. Also, it was quite hilarious when Conor was advising to shut up and ride when he was the only one talking. Inner monologue out loud, presumably.
Smashed to bits! 😂
If you found a sector with cobbles and also a continuous smooth dirt section next to it, I'd have liked to see if he could drop you if he was on the cobbles and you guys in the "smooth" dirt. Cool video to see the best making it look easy.
Laurence looks awesome.. 🚴
Would be cool to see some footage from y’all’s old racing days
I love how we are made to believe Hank and Connor are two total noobs and not ex pros themselves. Shows the difference for us mere mortals
Video idea! How many people does it take a beginner cyclist to draft behind a pro?
I live in a cobble stone area and driving a road bike is a literal pain in the bottom. Its also brutal for your bike and computer.
They put out power numbers I can only dream of. 60kmh? I don’t get that going downhill.
@stevenhowes530
Ай бұрын
my top speed (back in the 80s) was 77Kph, steep downhill in a group drafting each other. I don't think I could hold 30Kph for very long.
beautiful
the Top riders always seem to win in the end so not sure how much "luck" there is - amongst the Top 10 it can come down to opportunities won or lost - untimely crash - flat - missing an attack - in general though you always see the hard riders come to the fore and win - "the harder I ride the luckier I get" motto seems more apropos to describe Paris-Roubaix - Connor needs to train more - he is getting too old far too fast - Hammering Hank - absorbing MORE punishment - GCN masochist rises to the top
wait so if suspension is good on cobbles and no suspension is good on road then wouldn't front suspension with lockout feature be good for race like this?
@WerdnaLiten
Ай бұрын
Go and watch Peak Torque's show about this.........
had to google hard to find those wheels on yer man's Scott - Lightweight Fernweg EVOs if the inscrutable legend is anything to go by.
And that’s why Conti, Pirelli, and Schwalbe make 35mm racing slicks
At 1:38 I think you'll get your arses handed to to you on a plate. Lawrence didn't the tired after getting back to the end of the last cobble section. After going to a café to get as espresso and back to the meeting plase before Hank and Conor got there.
GCN v Pro = GCN toast! Me? I'll stick to watching from the kitchen table. Don't give up the day job lads, you do make brilliant videos 🎉😊
So - do the rules forbid any form of suspension? Surely they would go faster? (Or at least be less bruised afterwards)
Would you recommend to ride that course with a road or gravel bike? I would imagine all those vibrations are not doing any good to the carbon frames and components
Having ridden the cobbles in the Flandrien Challenge you just have to switch off the part of the brain that says what if.
And now imagine how MVDP would drop this pro....
it's amazing how strong the elite pro's actually are, imagine 100 other pro's racing at the same time on this course.?.
"Wow, what a captivating video! Watching you tackle those cobbles is truly mesmerizing. I could never handle them like that, so living vicariously through your adventures is the next best thing. Your skill is absolutely stunning, and it's been a while since I've seen anything quite like it. "Hold that wheel, Hank! You both absolutely nailed it and should be proud of yourselves." "Hank, I have to admit, I was expecting even more from you." "Wait, so if suspension works well on cobbles and no suspension is ideal for the road, wouldn't a front suspension with a lockout feature be perfect for a race like this?" "The level of analysis in this discussion is unparalleled. It feels like being part of a masterclass in critical thinking."
Did the cobbles start to smooth out as you got faster, a bit like skipping across the tops of them, or was it always just beating on everything harder?
“Where did they go?” lol
How does he make 650W look so easyyyyyyy 😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨

And to think that MvDP does this to the rest of the pro field!!!
The secret to riding cobbles is to float on top of them. It’s easy to maintain high speeds similar to pros when you understand this.

😂😂 fair enough! I had my fun though and did the hard miles, just enjoying riding my bike for kicks these days for the heck of it... At a much slower pace 😅👌 thanks for watching!
And then imagine this on race day with many more riders and the chances of clipping each other , at least the GCN boys were in a line behind him and NOT much chance of an accident to happen !
Where did they go? 😂🎉❤
Still would have got dropped, but I can’t help thinking Connor wasn’t benefitting from all the draft sitting being Hank 😂

I hope Lawrence's mechanical watch survived the cobblestone rattle.
Not fair to Conner at all. Hank is by far the smallest rider of the three. Conner, the tallest, presenting a much bigger CDA, especially with the floppy jacket. Order should have been: Naesen/Conner/Hank. Edit: Vest with floppy long sleeve jersey. :)

bruh i can't even hold 600w for 30s on smooth tarmac
“I was almost winning” 😂
Does anyone have a wrist check on the guy?
Guy looked like he was out for a light zone 2 ride
Scooter needed a gopro too, way too shaky on those cobbles.
Let’s be honest, Conner wasn’t getting much of a draft behind Hank 🤣
Cries in 200w
Pro wasn’t even breathing…..😂 great watch
I'm prepared to put money down that I *could not* do better. :D
🤔🤔👏👏👍👍
Why does his bike seem far too small for him
Pro rider with mustache... you know you are going to get dropped in the first minutes.
What were you guys thinking? Of course he's going to drop you.
That phrase looks pro is right there and its not Hank or Conor.
No gloves?
600w on cobblestone and not even breaking a sweat? How is he even human lol
Lawrence was doing 600+ watts and breathing with his mouth closed
gcn shouldve used bigger tires and suspension, they wouldve dropped the pro
I stopped the video when Conner said let us know how we will do. With all due respect I think you are going to get your ass handed to on a platter. LOL
4 pedal strokes and I'd be dropped
wow that was impressive. just SMH.
Not much of a surprise there. You should start renaming these videos "We were unable to hold a pro's wheel.....again"
On cobbles all you need is enough power and narrow high pressure tires. That’s how elite pro cyclists ride.
