Can we fix this Schumacher Li-po Jump Starter?

Ғылым және технология

In this video we look inside this Schumacher Jump pack and see why it is not charging. This video is much longer than I intended, but I wanted to show as much as possible about the Lithium cells and how they can lose capacity and not function as intended. In the end I had to wait a couple weeks on a new battery to truly get this booster pack back in tip top shape. I believe this booster pack is handy enough to justify $20 to save if only for the device power bank charging capabilities alone. Hope you find this video helpful and thanks for Watching!
* Update 4-2021:
The one I ordered now shows unavailable, this is the closest I can find now without buying more than one at this time. Be sure to check for your dimension needs.

    Incredible details on both the video and the links. Way beyond the average youtube video. I salute you and your great knowledge and attention to detail. I am having a problem with my Schumacher SL 1315. It suddenly stopped working when I was using it to boost my battery in my 1955 Ford Crown. ( converted to 12 volt, its not 6 volt) The Lithium cell is swollen so much I can not snap the case back on. back in my past career I worked in Lithium Ion as an EE. I got back into it as an to build a S4 Lithium 230 AH set up for my motorhome. Its a learning and relearning and your video is pretty cool. thanks

    Just realized you said trickle charger and not a booster pack you were asking about. I am not sure about those, I do not have a schumacher version of a trickle charger to say for sure. Do they just stop working all together? One of the most common issues I have had with any charger is a bad connection. To save money, companies use cheap clips/clamps and the connection is not even soldered alot of the time. Where the wire connects to the clip it is sometimes just crimped and subject to issues. The inside board with components can also corrode with these as alot of these are left in garages and shops. Hard to say other than these issues, it could be a circuit board issue.

    I recently bought a Schumacher SL1596. It’s a bigger looking one than the one in the video. It is 2500 amps apparently. Paid $330 for it, hoping it is a decent quality and will not let me down in times of need. I hope I haven’t wasted my money on it because I would have paid more for a better one if I knew this one was not great. It’s difficult to know what to buy these days with so much inferior stuff around. I’m supposed to charge it every month even if not used. I might never need to actually use it but I was thinking it’s good to know I have it onboard just in case.

    Sir, first I would like to congratulate you as well as thank you for your video, excellent work. I have been using Lipo Jump starters for a few years now and I would say that they have worked well when I needed them to, but the main problem is that most starters never last for more than a year or with luck, year and a half at most. I usually buy 2 starters, one for each car in my house, and I can honestly say that this experience has been a constant. After careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that the biggest issue has to do with fully charging the Lipos and then putting leaving them inside your car for a few months or until you need to use them. It is a fact that Lipos don't hold up well when you put them on storage fully charged, that is why they recommend storing a lipo at 80 to 85% of the capacity, actually most lipo chargers have a Lipo storage charge option that does this automatically. I currently have my last 2 Jump starters, both have dead Lipos of course, but instead of throwing them away and thanks to your video, I'm going to try replacing the Lipo battery packs to see if I can save them and also, instead of giving them a full charge, I'm going to give them a storage charge to see if I can get them to last longer. At 85% of their capacity they should be able to jump start a vehicle easily. Again, thanks for the vid, superb.

    Appreciate the video! Quick question.. anyone know what happens if your load test an Li-Po using a traditional lead -acid auto battery resistance load tester?

  • @ThriftyToolShed

    @ThriftyToolShed

    2 жыл бұрын

    To be honest it would almost certainly damage the cells. Li-Po are being used to help boost a weak battery but under heavy loads these cells will fail! Lead acid does much better with very heavy loads as well as pulling voltage to low level. Li-Po are unfortunately finiky about over current and over and under voltage. So I use them to boost a week vehicle, but I would not expect them to hold up with much abuse. They are great for emergency use and are very light weight and convenient though. I would not put them under undue stress, that's just my opinion.

    If not a real temp issue then I would check the NTC thermistor for the pack. It could be faulty or wire damage. That's all I would know to check if showing temp issue. Most (not all) NTC thermistors read around 10k ohms at room temp. If device is truly getting warm it is most likely a shorted cell issue. Best of luck to ya!

    The displays on these jumpstarts are typically not great. I would check across the cells to see how balanced the cells are. The main failure point is usually the pack itself. If the pack test good, it must be an issue with the board itself.

I have had up to 7 years of use from these with no issues (example link below). You just have to charge them every 6-8 months or so. I could not wait until the lithium style packs finally came out, they would hold charge a lot longer in between uses and so much lighter weight.... Man they have been a huge disappointment. I have a Booster Pac in my truck right now. It has been excellent for over 5 years now. The one before that lasted over 7 years. amzn.to/3PuLpd2

    It is possible that they put on a 4S pack instead of a 3S pack I guess? First of all most packs you can look and tell how many cells are in the pack if not clear wrapped so you can count the cells in pack, you may have to carefully cut open the heat shrink around them to look. The other way to tell is if you carefully cut back covering over the connections, you can tell where the cell connections go. It might even be that the extra wire you have is simply done differently. In other words it's possible if it's a 3S pack still, that there could be a extra small wire added to the BMS instead of using the heavy gauge black and red for the monitoring. I would simply see where they connected them to cells. They must have changed board revision at some point.

    Hi, I personally have learned electrical and basic electronics over 25 years ago at Technical college. I also have almost 25 years experience in industrial automation as a technician. Electronics is really more of a hobby. I have always loved learning how things work, how they look inside and learning how we might repair without schematics these days on most tools and electronics sold have none. I guess I am still learning and trying to share with the community as we learn. So I actually do not have a degree. I would think any EE (Electronics Engineer) with a degree could also help with your desire to show here. If you can not find anyone available I could possibly atleast share a video that could be as helpful as I could possibly make it, however it may not be in time for this Christmas at this point.

    @@drummerdoingstuff5020 Hi, It is an electronic load. I sometimes refer to it as my capacity tester since it can log the current throughout the test and give us accurate test data. I do like this older model ok, but it is a real pain to adjust the current up/dn on with the one button design. I now have the newer model and it's so much easier to set and the display is amazing! amzn.to/3DzKaqd

    If it's just like this one, the only thing really is to solder on another one on to the board. If it's just the plastic that is broken and the switch works then you can carefully still actuate the switch possibly with small plastic tip of something. A screwdriver could cause damage.

    Well, the one I have and the ones I have seen the connector goes straight to the battery pack itself so it's very possible. It's better to have the balance leads connected to a hobby charger of course for better charge monitoring of each individual cell. In a tight it can be charged with a constant current supply. Like the one on my bench that I use often.

    It will do suprising well if maintained fully charged. I chose this pack because it is alot more capacity than many of the small jump packs on the market. The smaller schumacher jump packs etc. are only around 4000mah or so. I wanted to use this much larger pack. They make some even larger, but they do get expensive. The only draw back to this set-up is you have to make sure you have polarity correct, which is a big deal anyway Even with jumper cables of course that's a big deal! The smaller jump packs do have the reverse polarity protection built in. You could actually buy those small protected leads as well if desired. I have seen those for sale on eBay. I should have mentioned that in video.

    @@pearlrival3124 Just make sure it is a 3S you have in your model. I had a 3S for sure, some viewers mentioned they had a 4S in theirs. Of course dimensions need to be matched unless you have extra room and the higher rating is usually fine. The higher C rating and capacity is better in the long run.

Most things are electronic to some degree, crazy...
