Can We Disable a Security Camera With a Laser Pointer? (handheld & tripod-mounted)
Ғылым және технология
We've all seen that one movie or show where the bad guy shines a laser into the security camera to disable it. We wanted to see if this was possible, so we took a 5mW laser and pointed it directly into the camera to see the results.

"Hello, today we will be testing the effectiveness of firearms at incapacitating a human. Where we live, the most powerful gun you can buy legally is from NERF." *Shoots person with NERF gun from multiple ranges* "Upon inspection of our test subject we could only find a small red mark left by the NERF bullets. We have concluded that firearms are not lethal and are ineffective at incapacitating a human subject."
Congratulations on a great video
00:00 🔦 Testing if a laser pointer can disable security cameras like in movies or shows. 00:28 🛑 Attempting to disable the camera handheld using a high-power laser pointer. 01:19 👁 Despite direct laser exposure, the camera remained functional without significant damage or malfunction. 02:14 📡 Mounting the laser pointer on a tripod for a prolonged exposure test. 03:13 ⏱ Extended exposure did not disable the camera; image quality remained largely unaffected. 04:03 🚫 Blinding the camera temporarily was possible, but full disablement proved difficult; minimal impact on image quality observed. 04:44 🎥 It's challenging to disable security cameras using laser pointers; difficult to verify if the camera is blinded; multiple cameras increase the chance of detection.
Use infrared at night. The ir is wide like a regular flashlight and completely blinds the camera if they are on night vision. That why I like the cheap security cams that sound just like "Wise" as you can disable the ir in settings and they can basically see in color with just moonlight. I bought some cheap night vision goggles and extra infrared penlights that have an adjustable beam. The results are stunning. I initially was attempting to use a Webcam, but by the time I took the red film off the lens, messed with linking it to my cell phone/hat etc, the cheap night vision goggles was a time saver. But ya, pitch black, no moon, cant see 2 feet and that tiny penlight infrared and goggles made it like daytime, but only in B&W of course. It would make a fun vid to make your own night vision. They have cheap penlights and also larger units that mount on your regular camera.

Thanks for your suggestions! We plan to test an IR flashlight (for blinding the camera) in a future video, but we never thought about making our own night vision! I'll have to look into it and see if we can make it happen.
this is actually really lovely. You guys earned a sub!
If you were to get a 1W blue laser then it might burn the sensor damaging the camera, green lasers are strong but not enough to do damage to a camera

You're right, if a laser pointer is powerful enough to set objects on fire then it could potentially do some serious damage to the camera. In Canada, anything above 5mW is prohibited for sale, so a 1W blue laser is a definite nope for us.
Wow this a cool video. Fun and love the violin music. 👍🏽
Shining lasers on or around reflective surfaces can cause instant eye damage. Green lasers are notorious for this so please wear the appropriate safety glasses.
Styropyro has a pulsed laser that just the reflections permanently damages a camera.
So i watch nile red, which is Canadian, you are telling me you can order all those chemicals there, that we cant here in the US, but a high powered lazer is too much for the public? Canada is weird lol.
You should try it at night though..not at daytime
It's not hard to get a hold of high power handheld lasers, or at least you could make one, if you had real malicious intent it's totally possible to get a hold of one. I would like to see a test with a high power burning laser and see what that can do to a camera. I'm sure with enough power you could do some real damage, even without the tripod.

You're definitely right, if someone really wanted to get a more powerful laser into Canada they could. As tested, we know that the standard laser pointer you can buy on Amazon is not strong enough. You'd have to get something more powerful (potentially illegal) to really affect a security camera.

@ryanfang97 kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYZ50tCAoajOg7A.html&ab_channel=IPVM This is actually a video testing it using a 30 watt laser, turns out it's harder than I though. Even using the high power laser you still need a tripod and need to be fairly close, only then you can do real damage to where the camera would be unusable.
you need a laser that can pump out over 5 mw a reg pointer won't work u can get a 500 mw laser for like 90 bucks the kind that lights matches instantly or burn thru nd set paper on fire in just a second . those hand held laser would fry through any camera in mere seconds .
you should just ask styropyro! you dont look like you would be able to learn anything about lasers that he doesnt already know.
