Not exactly brilliant, that's how you find true TDC when setting up your degree wheel. Use a stop take note of the degree, rotate engine other way to stop take note of degree add two numbers together divide by two. Rotate engine to that degree loosen degree wheel set to 0*.

@Milner62

@@billsmith5166, same way I used it to find TDC to setup my degree wheel when I degreed my cam. They make piston stops for with head installed and with head removed. Use the piston stops rotate engine till it stops write degree from wheel down. Rotate engine other way till stop write degree down. Add two together divide by 2. That degree is true TDC. Rotate to that degree then loose up wheel and set to 0°. Example, piston stops has engine stopping at 278° and 282°, 278 + 282 = 560 / 2 = 280°. Rotate engine to 280° then loosen degree wheel and set to 0° you just found true TDC

@@ThunderHead289, first off I'm talking in general how one finds true TDC they make a tool for with head on and with head off. Secondly while you can't use it on this engine with the head on you can use the head off version. To say you can't use a piston stop on any Ford flat head engine is wrong and over generalizing as the one I have will work on your engine as it is used with the head off.

The Sherman units I'm familiar with were three speed units: over, direct and under drive. With the unit in neutral, try sliding the shift lever out, away from the trans housing. If it comes out about half an inch it is the three speed. After pulling the lever out, shift it forward or back (I forget which) for direct drive (if I remember) then push the lever back in for under and over drive.
@michaeljennings714610 ай бұрын
Those Sherman units are highly prized. As I think you said in the first video, first gear is pretty tall on these. Must have been nice for plow work. For PTO work if you need to maintain rpm’s I can only figure you would have to throttle up negating the lower ground speed achieved with the underdrive. Brush hogging mixed woods and brush with my 4 speed 601 “641” can best be described as “exciting’.

Super interesting video Luke! An uncle of mine had a compressor like that which he ran off his old Allis tractor. I recall about 50 years ago my dad had a low tire and compressor. My uncle filled his tractor tire right there on the field and I was so impressed! Never seen one used again

My uncle had the same device to air up his Ford8N tires and his old Chevy pickup tires--of course, they weren't that old way back then.

My grandpa had a simple single piston air pump that fit onto the tractor pto shaft. It had a short length of chain that was used to prevent it from rotating.

Man I love these kind of videos 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love these tractor videos. Old sturdy mechanicals. Very interesting and educational. Old guys like me who grew up with mechanical vs. digital systems appreciate what you’re doing.
Everything is a hammer, and screwdrivers are multipurpose tools. Great to see the old boy running, great job!
This was so fun and cool to see the ol N9 back in the field. 😮
That was a pretty cool trick to find TDC. I never would have thought of that one.
Feeling sentimental about those plugs just feels right
with the deck chained up like that the tractor is basically a nice BUSH HOG. it probably wouldnt hurt to give the blades a little love.
That ancient tire inflator is such a great find
I love the Gremlin in the back ground!
I am 50 years old and have been wrenching on things my entire life well maybe not the first 5 years but most of it anyway and I am always learning new tips and tricks and I am always impressed in how I learn things from you Luke!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!!

Classic tinkering using common sense and ingenuity. Love it.
That was a first for me, never saw or knew there was a tool made to air up a tire utilizing the engine. Pretty neat stuff, thanks for sharing.
Still- a terrific mower!! Great job Uncle Luke!!😂😂😎😎
Great Job getting the dord 2N tractor running great. sounds great.. great looking Horse's..
Love this revival!!!...TH289...please give that thing a bath...I know it will open up a can of worms...but watching you deal with them will be good content ..
Summer tractor and winter tractor! Now you are spoiled! lol
Thank you thunderhead289 always enjoy watching you videos.
Freekin automotive mad scientist! I really enjoyed all this
Nice job.👍
We had one of those tyre pumps o the farm when I was a kid!! 55 years ago!
Dang that was interesting! Thanks for another great video! Ive seen people make compressors from a whole V8. Mount it on a trailer, hook it to the PTO. Lol, i had forgotten it till now...
Thanks for the video Luke. You always have some interesting new gadgets.
Excellent video Luke :) on time engine on old tractor also funny part that Air Compressor on Spark Plugs work excellent on 2 , 3 , 4 , 6 , V8 motor if want know my late Dad , his brother (my Uncle) pump up tires on old Gas Tractor 1950 Cockshutt COOP 40 with Buta Motor 6 cylinder 43 hp with 60 torque on front tires, back had Calcium Flurioda with air plus Gas motor 202 Cubic Inches 4 cylinder motor of a 1968 McCormick International 105C combine , 1968 International 624 A Desiel motor tires , 1978 International 724 B loader Desiel fuel motor tractor tires plus machinery like seed drill , wagons , disk cultivator , pick up truck, stake trucks , cars , you name only thing didn't have was gauge on hose just modern people use ! Also think weird even pump tire on there 1990 Chevrolet Cheyenne 2500 (3/4 ton) pick had 305 V8 TBI fuel injection motor pump tires fine ! My other uncle Roy had farm below one I grew up to south farm he ran old 1937 Ford Model A Cele Trac (car tractor) also Ford Model 8N and 9N plus loader tractor gas for over 50 years & 1992 when past away his tractor at farm Auction went for nice $ and plus old 1955 Fargo 1 ton pick truck also been restoration to like new ! So not only use old things from years back and have lots farmers in my area still running old tractor to machinery to ! Even horse power stuff too and it wild for sure!
Luke, life is a lot better when your hair goes back and under the hat. Just sharing as mine runs about just passed midway of my back.

If Kevin (JYD) still has his Gremlin X, maybe y'all can build your Gremlins together... Not a competition, but a "Team Effort" project episode.
I have restored two Fords, an 8N and a 2N. The 2 N was stuck, I got it freed up but smoked bad. Pulled the front end, pan, and head, honed the cylinders, replaced the rings and rod bearings for 120 bucks. Ran perfect Did you know Ford used the V8 Flathead as an air compressor? 4 cylinders to run the engine and the other 4 to compress air. I have seen a couple of them. Love the old Fords!
That’s awesome! Gotta life old iron !
Man that old vintage ford Tractor Just eating up them tall weeds and brush in the field mower deck works great Luke 31:39 love the video @ThunderHead289
Sparkplug air pump saved many of us old boomers many times😎
Sherman Overdrive i belive was back in the old days when Most farmers drove there tractors to stores and everything i belive that's why ford made these old Tractors fast especially being faster then most old Ford Model A's

@@ThunderHead289 yah, true! You did a great job explaining the piston stop. Thanks for that.
Interesting tid-bits... Definitely some early engineering, lol, tips to get them to run. Knew lots of folks that had the cylinder pumps, took a while, especially on big tires. Former concrete buddy had one for wheelbarrows. Told a story when he was a kid, trying to flat tow a couple of cars to the junk yard, that the valve messed up & filled the tire with fumes. Low leaker tire got hot & ignited it off the bead... Had to hurry, so towed it on the rim... Thanx !
Awesome tractor! Excellent job Sir! 😎
Couple of comments…I find it hard to believe that hauling that scythe thing 30 miles is the sketchiest thing you have ever done after watching your act. I want this tractor! It is my favorite vehicle in your fleet. She deserves a name for sure. I suggest ‘Lightning’. Paint a lightning bolt on the hood! The reason it goes so fast is to run from the cops? Or you could go to town for a 6 pack after mowing?
Hard to kill those old machines.
Mower deck is giving some awesome stripes in that field what a great ild ford tractor 32:15 @Thunderhead289
Ah yeah, more tractor vids! You treat us too kind Uncle Luke! Also, I have no idea what you said while your horses were in the background, all I could think about was "I wanna pet that horse-nose."
Really enjoyed this. The way you found TDC was brilliant.
@Milner62
10 ай бұрын
Not exactly brilliant, that's how you find true TDC when setting up your degree wheel. Use a stop take note of the degree, rotate engine other way to stop take note of degree add two numbers together divide by two. Rotate engine to that degree loosen degree wheel set to 0*.
@billsmith5166

@@Milner62 How would you have found TDC? How would you have used a stop?
@Milner62
10 ай бұрын

@Milner62 cant use a piston stop on a flathead engine where the valves are directly below the spark plug, not the piston. Method the same, the means are different in this case.
@Milner62

"If you're gonna have junk, you might as well have junk that runs good." - ThunderHead289 T-shirt that shit and I'll buy one.
Great deal on a belly mower with a free tractor
Both videos were great! Very cool stuff.
I would love to come there and cut the fields with it just for the experience. I can't wait to see it when you finish the whole revival. A working museum piece.
Amazing recycling project there.
Excellent analysis on the bypass spring. Frankly, I find that fascinating. So the two different viscosities made the bypass suspect as a form of science "control." Well done Sir. I like the science. Keep it up.
My grandfathers and uncles all had the tire inflator set ups in their pickup trucks. They did work in a pinch out in the fields.
Luke that was awesome, you always bring some killer stuff to the table that's why I love your videos 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅
You definitely have that will do can do and get it done spirit. Have a couple of Ford tractors but my world war 2 tractor is my favorite. That your all's my attention to this tractor 🚜.

I still say you should clean it up and rewire it and throw a paint job on it. do a full 12v conversion on it and put an alternator on it and make the electrical system neat. Maybe even name it, Mowerhead 289. 😄😄😄

Thought about painting "to boldly mow where no one has mowered before" on the side of the hood 😄 I'll definitely clean it up a little now that it has proved its usefulness
I used one of those tire fill devices when I was a teenager on the farm. It worked great 👍 on my chore truck. It had an inline 6 engine.
Time for paint now👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video , love the air pump setup at the end
Absolute genius! love your style and explanation.
Lol. That thing is 80 years old now and it will probably outlast us all. I had one that my cousin kept borrowing so I sold it to him, I think it was a 47, I don't think you can kill them, not unless you really try and that's cheating!
Pretty neat tractor. I've been around a few of them an they all seem to run really good. You got a great deal 🤠. Thanks 👍 for sharing.
Well that was very cool 😎
Nice timing for my lunch break!
Never been this early!! you got a heckuva a deal, Luke!
I just recently pulled my distributer on my early model 8n, and the weights were gummed up and only had about 2mm of travel. So my 2 cents is that if you pull the distributor, go ahead and disassemble it all the way, and get everything a good clean, only takes a few min, and I'm sure she wont complain.
Ford for the win! ❤
Them old things run good on 8psi no problem. Would be interested is seeing you get the old headlights and everything working again in a possible other video. You'd get a kick out of my 1936 Farmall F-20. For its overdrive you put the main transmission in neutral, then there's a axillary gear you engage in a second gearbox to do around 16mph instead of the normal 4moh.
Was great to watch ! Thanks
All the old tractors and vehicles with an oil bath air cleaner really appreciate a good cleaning to get all the crud out of the wire mesh.
@ThunderHead289
10 ай бұрын
I didn't show it because I figured it would be boring but I had to HEAVILY clean out the filter, took the mesh out and literally cut a 1/4 inch off the bottom because I couldn't get it clean. Looked like it hadn't been serviced in at least 30 years
The Sherman units I'm familiar with were three speed units: over, direct and under drive. With the unit in neutral, try sliding the shift lever out, away from the trans housing. If it comes out about half an inch it is the three speed. After pulling the lever out, shift it forward or back (I forget which) for direct drive (if I remember) then push the lever back in for under and over drive.
I think the horse approved. the work also.
On the 2N and 9N Fords you can plumb in an external hydraulic pump into the three point giving you live three point. I saw this years ago on Yesterdays Tractor forum. It looked like a power steering pump that was used but one of the front mount pumps would work also.
This guy is a genius. And uses a screwdriver and pipe wrench the mark TDC. Got to love it. Luke is the man

I used to carry one of those chuffer pumps on my motorcycle - they work quite well.
I bought a kit from a company that specialized in motorcycle products that aired up the tires using that method. It worked great on a GPZ 1100 Kawasaki.
