I think this "Loose Ends" series needs a name, and, a little note at the start of every episode to encourage everyone at home who's been letting a project sit for too long, to get off of the couch and make progress tying up one loose end themselves. A little self-help series.

I had to chuckle when you mentioned the front of the truck lifting with the engine. Most of us who've spent time in a garage knows the front suspension is going to unload quite a bit when the weight of the engine is lifted off. Of course, we also know the primary unintended use of a cherry picker is to test the tensile strength of any wire, cable, hose, line, or linkage you neglected to discinnect prior to attempting to lift the engine. Nice tutorial gents.

Kevin, I rebuilt a lot of engines in my career, including 2.3 litre Fords , 6.5 litre Chevrolet turbo diesels , FE series Fords and 2 stroke Detroit Diesels. My assembly lube was black moly grease. It doesn't harden, dissipates quickly in motor oil on start-up -( unless you simply went Bozo the clown with it.), and is not expensive. On piston rings I used oil, of course, but for almost everything else, including the cam bearings, lobes and bottom of lifters, black moly got the job done. Yes, lifters were soaked in engine oil, only the bottoms got the grease, but it's a good extreme pressure lube and I never experienced any cam failures when proper run-in was followed. It did not clog any oil filters, like a lot of "expert" mechanics swore it would. Take it from a guy who was there, it is probably better assembly lube than they sell at the parts house.

Realistically when pulling engines with friends, one should be on top yanking those parts, and the other should be doing all the underneath stuff (with music and cold snacks of course) but always hilarious watching your stuff! But you should also consider investing in a cyclopse work light if you dont have some already, theyre the bees knees, compact three brightness settings, and magnetize to almost everything with rust crusties!

Hey Kevin here's an Awesome tip -- my Grandpa showed me many many years ago -- get 2 bolts 3 or 4 inches long and cut the heads off and hand thread them into block on each side then it's Super easy to line everything up and when you get it seated and put a bolt in each side you can unscrew the alignment bolts by hand. I would also round off the end of bolt and cut a slot in them for a screwdriver -- works Great and keep those bolts in your toolbox Forever-- Really makes life Easier😊😊

I put the bolts through on the frame and the engine mounts that way you can line it up and eyeball it into place and get the bolts in 1 by 1 and after you have them all in you can tighten them all in at the same time and make any adjustments on the fly with the connections and exhaust and sensors. it works really well!

40:53 Been there, done that. Critical tip: do not force the trans to the engine. I had a 1972 VW Type 3 with the pancake motor and the automatic transmission by borg warner. I had no idea how a torque converter worked, I didn't even know what one was when I took the motor out so the torque converter fell out onto the ground. I was 16. I put it back up into place, and then I proceeded to earn enough money at $3.35 an hour to finally rebuild the motor. Every single part had to be replaced all that was saved was the case after line boring and case savers and the crank after having it turned. When I finally saved up enough money to buy all the parts. (Months later) to put the motor back together to get it to run and bolted it up to the transmission I crushed all the interior gears because the torque converter was not all the way seated in and I used the bolts to force it all together.

One thing I have learned about mating the FE engine to an automatic is leave the engine mounts off the block until after you get the engine hooked up to the transmission fully, then you can lift the engine up just enough to slide the engine mounts in and bolt them to the block and to the vehicle. The studs on the mounts hitting the perches make mating the engine to the trans a nightmare. I've done it three times with three different vehicles. Tried it with the mounts removed on the third one and no problemo.

I remember pulling a 460 and C6 out of a F250 Supercab, in some sandy area with a new hoist. Bolted head to head with chains. *I would never trust the carb pull plate* So the actual fail point was the brand new chain of the hoist, between the arm and the hook. Well I heard, what sounded like metal whizzing past my head. Imediatly the 460 and trans slammed to back down, no damage, no hurt. After awhile, I double chained the engine, and hoist-Pulled out the 460. Still have the 460.

I predict you'll be replacing the trans next. Ask me how I know Talking about cam break in's; Back in the 80s we had spent all day Sunday changing the cam in my 67 Mustang, we got it fired at 22:00 not wanting to make the neighbors upset, we set the idle up and I took a road trip, towards the next town so I wouldn't have to stop. With one eye on the road the other on the gauges, I wasn't paying attention to the speedometer, then the car I had just met threw a uturn, knowing what was about to happen I pulled off and was sitting on the trunk with my paperwork in hand, engine still rumbling through the 2.5 glass packs as the Texas state officer in his Mustang pulled up behind me. He gets out and walks up and asked me what was going on, the only clean thing on me was my hands. So I told him he unshiips his flashlight and starts towards the front asking What have you done to the old girl, I opened the hood and started pointing out the headers I met up with him again but that is a whole nother story involving a drag strip

There are youtubers that talk too much, and nothing important actually gets said. And then there is Junkyard Digs, so much gets said, and it's so informative, while being entertaining. This is a well oiled machine that I truly hope lasts forever!
