+Peter Caulton Why recommend what is very difficult or impossible for people to do, when the risk being avoided is very negligible? I have never seen water in glass containers in the at stores where I live. While I haven't went shopping for any, I assume glass containers are expressive to buy and expensive to ship. More likely that not a plastic product is use to seal the jug or jar. Stored water for emergencies is hopefully for a short time use, and is essential, I feel it unreasonable to focus any hazards from plastic.

  • @dangoddess

+waswestkan Really? I collect my drinking water from a natural spring and store it in empty wine bottles that have screw top lids. If you care about your health you can do that too. Glass is reusable and eco friendly. Tell your supermarket that you will no longer buy water in plastic bottles and call your local water authority and tell them to supply you with healthy drinkable water from your house supply or you will lower your contributions to their supply.

What happens, say, if you open a 16 ounce bottle of water, take a swig and then close it? What would be the shelf life in that scenario? Also, I guess you would have to take in consideration if the bottle was left out afterwards or put immediately into the refrigerator? Thank you!

  • @BrainStuffShow

Hey hey! Once you've put your mouth on a water bottle, there's going to be some saliva and bacteria in there. Even if you close it back up, the bacteria can start multiplying. Putting it in the fridge would help prevent them from growing. You probably wouldn't need to worry too much about drinking from this kind of thing either way -- it proooobably wouldn't make you sick. But it definitely wouldn't be as clean as a sealed bottle of water.

Since water sort of absorbs chemicals from plastics, how possible is it to absorb similar chemicals from the metal pipes in our water systems? In which case, which is more harmful, water stored in plastic bottles or water stored in metal pipes? Sidenote: Here in India, we have a tradition of storing water in Copper utensils overnight (at least) before consuming it (They say it is good for your body). When my mom came to know about it, she god a bunch of copper cans to drink water from.

Few people die from water dispensers in the millions of offices. We breathe contamination all the time. Fumes, spores, pollen, chemicals, dust, viruses and bacteria and dead cells. It's not that we shouldn't drink container water because of health, our bodies have defence mechanisms it is just the psychological ewww factor you talk about.

2 problems. 1 I think they should mention that if water is left in a plastic bottle in a hot car in the summer it tastes super strongly of leeching plastic, and say how and why that happens. and 2 he says and figure out how to get the plastic out of your body later... I've never ever heard of anyone telling people how to get rid of plastic in one's body out of said body. Or if that's even possible, b/c certain toxins NEVER leave the body.

Very true, though it would be great to go a bit more into detail. Water doesn't go bad because whenever you think of things "going bad" you generally picture an apple or some leftovers getting moldy and gross. When organic material like that "goes bad" it's because it's being consumed by bacteria, yeast, and other teeny tiny things, which are actually breaking it down bit-by-bit and changing it on a microscopic level-- like yeast chewing up all the tiny sugars that make up the structure of that organic material. Water on the other hand, H2O, doesn't get consumed by microbes in this way. It's not comprised of organic matter, it's just a Hydrogen and 2 Oxygen atoms. It only SEEMS to "go bad" from our macroscopic perspective because what we see is a change in the entirety of the stuff in our container; observable changes like those that are happening thanks to dust flecks and hairs getting stuck to the surface, and the algae, mosquito larvae, etc. mentioned in this video. However, the actual individual microscopic bits of H2O doesn't get consumed and changed by bacteria, yeast, etc. as we see with organic compounds like sugars, proteins, starches, etc. which is how it differs. It helps to examine and understand what's going on when something "goes bad" in accordance with common parlance. ;) I was kinda hoping you guys would have explained it from this perspective, but great video nonetheless! I really hope you revisit this some day and give a more granular supplemental recap. :D

Because it was a previously used bottle it had bacteria in it, and the bacteria had multiplied and thrived in the water inside the bottle, making her sick when she drank it.
