I am 73 and have had multiples forever. I never had many litter boxes and I've never had a problem. I just make sure they are cleaned properly.

@Maggie George I have multiples & it's not an issue. I use "the world's best cat litter" & it's easy to scoop & clean. Prior, I used whatever was going & a system with plastic bags. This works so much better!!! Four cats & two litter boxes. I clean immediately.

For many years, more than one cat has lived with me at a time. I've not ever had more than two litter boxes at a time and that was at times that there were more than two cats in the household. There were no incidents of any cat urinating or defecating outside their litter boxes. I think that it's a matter of making sure they are kept clean.

I do hope my kittens are cool with sharing a single litter box, because there is literally no place in my small studio for a second one lmao.

no problems if automatic litter box…

We had 5 cats & 2 extra large litter boxes. They all used the same litter box until it was “full” then they would move to the other box. Since we kept the litter boxes scooped often we rarely had to clean the second box.

We have 2 cats from the same litter and they've always used the same box. We have ONE in our small home, and it's never been a problem for them.

I went with two litter boxes for two cats as I live in a small 700 sq ft home and couldn’t really fit another one in. Both ended up using the one box almost exclusively so I just downsized and make sure to keep it really clean with multiple daily scoopings and litter refills and monthly scrub downs and refresh. It’s also an extra large box with plenty of room to turn around and dig, so I think that helps.

Adopted a second cat a month ago. And even if the litter boxes are in different rooms, both cats appear to be fine both boxes and would go to which ever box was closest to them.

I have two cats. Brothers from the same litter. They've been together their entire life, and with me just about 2 years. I have 270 square feet and about 70 of that is walkable for me or the cats. They have 2 boxes. BUT I empty them every 24-36 hours, MAX... because my desk is 3 feet from the bathroom door... LOL

I am so glad you commented! I live in a 350sqft studio & am about to get brothers from the same litter as well. This gives me so much hope.

Simple answer is yes. Just clean regularly.

We have a big male cat and a dainty little girl cat (not related). They share one big box fine, as long as I use Pretty Kitty litter and keep it cleaned out.

Yes. I have 5 cats and 5 boxes, they all just use which ever box they feel like at the time.

I have 2 Cats and 3 litter trays. One cat doesn't like using tray when the other cat has been but the other uses every one!!

For now I own 2 kittens, their currently still training to use the litter got them one for a small bathroom in the living room and so far both are using it equally and doesn’t bother each other, but as soon I see problem between the 2 I will buy them a new one

I really just think it's how you clean them. I have two cats and I check their litter boxes every time I get home or every time I hear them digging in it. We have the breeze system so I only need to scoop their poop but they only use the bedroom litter box at night if the door is closed and they can't get to the one in the living room. Otherwise they will litterally wait their turn to use the living room box. They have never used the dinning room box 😂😭.
