If the emperor has indeed become a true god of the warp in the past 10k years, then he may be able to wrench lost human souls from the chaos gods. In fact, I theorise that that would be the true meaning of ‘the emperor protects’. Then what is a miserable life of servitude in a hive, to an eternity in the bliss of the emperors light protected from the horrors of the warp?

Perhaps. Remember, by this point in the timeline, probably most Chaos Marines are not from the HH era - they were made from children captured, or even bred, by the traitor Legion/Chapter/Warband they are part of. They never personally *turned away* from the Emperor's Light, as it were, they never had a chance to be in it. I think they might be redeemed if they turned away from Chaos, actually *seeking* the Emperor's Light and service to the Imperium.

Actually no, the chaos legions/chapters cannot replenish their forces by recruiting/capturing kids, their domain is the warp and the only reinforcements they have are chaos demons. Chaos space marine legions are slowly shrinking , not every Chaos marine gets brought back after they die, their chaos gods send their souls to eternal punishment simply because they failed to live and slay their enemies.

Jon, They totally replenish their ranks with gene seed. There are plenty of planets they can shake down for children, or populations of slaves on their vessels to recruit from. @accywacky2699

    4 жыл бұрын

@@JabberwockOclock What this guy said, while making new marines from scratch is difficult, a raid that obtains viable geneseeds from a loyalist chapter certainly can be used to create new chaos marines who will, naturally, be given training and armed as per their chaos force's inclinations. Some will also draft/recruit renegade marines that enter the eye as squads or whole chapters that have gone rogue as long as they hit that sweet spot of "competent enough that we want them but not so competent that we'd have to kill them for trying to take over the recruiter's rank in the legion before we can get proper use out of them". Another way is to conscript from other legions... Abaddon's black legion is rather known for doing this and most of the "cult marines" serving in his legion are indeed draftees taken by making warbands of said cult-marines swear allegiance to Abby (or suffer a very painful and unmercyful end). A notable exception to the above would be the thousand sons, but those can be re-forged, its just a question of how much of the original enchanted suit and/or dust you have to work with vs how many souls you'll have to sacrifice to get a shiny new dust-bucket.

He never rejoined the imperium of man he merely accepted that though he'd never be among his brothers again he could at least help them from behind enemy lines. His only companion being a lay priestess he saved from slavers with a severely damaged psyke. They travel doing small things to give hope to people born within the territories of chaos. I know it sounds way too positive for 40k but hey it was fanfiction and I had fun with the idea :) Redeemable or not I like the idea that maybe a little hope can still save them

Its a nice hint in Dark Imperium novel, where it says how the Scythe of Mortarion is still untaintes, uncorrupted by chaos.the steel is still pure, still shiny.basicaly its the last piece of Mortarion belongings, what still contains his humanity, and its a remainder for him of his life before the heresy. I think deep inside mortarion seeks redemption, he hates nurgle and he hates that he is a pawn of a chaos god. If the Emperor would awake one day, and if they would talk, i see a chance for redemption for Mortarion. Same for Magnus, who never wanted to be a traitor, but was forced to flee into the eye of terror. Angron has every right to hate his father. The only way to save Angron, is to ressurect somehow his fallen comrades lost in the last battle on Nuceria, and tell him personally that he is sorry about it. Then and only then is a little chance to redeem Angron. Lorgar though is a treacharous piece of shit, and deserves no redemption. The night hauntera are simple maniacs, psychopats. And Fullgrim was lost when he killed Ferrus.

Yeah the Emperor has been a dick to him but that doesn't mean he has to do the same to his sons. Saying he hates politician like in Nuceria because of what they did to him when he is just repeating what they done to him now to his own sons and imagine if the Emperor didn't beam him and somehow he manages to survive, An entire populace of Nuceria equipped or forcefully, surgically attached with the FUCKING NAILS and his own tactic of throwing his sons in the battlefield like replaceable Automatons is fucked up.

Now I want a story about a Chaos Space Marine chapter going to war against their own patron god, either out of spite, a misguided sense that they can somehow "beat" their chaos god, or a genuine, unexpected change of heart. They'd be doomed to fail and face unholy punishment from their chaos god, but the battle leading to that grim end would be extraordinary.

I know that people don't like me bringing AoS lore into 40k but the nature of souls and Chaos are the same in both universes so its relevant. There is actually a well documented case of a soul that is corrupted by Chaos being redeemed in the story of Tornus the Redeemed. Apologies in advance for such a long comment. Tornus was a proud warrior and follower of Sigmar who's tribe fell victim to a Nurgle invasion where he was unfortunately taken alive, tortured for months, and eventually turned to the worship of Nurgle out sheer desperation. He was renamed Torglug the Despised and would rise up the ranks of his war band till he was one of the most powerful Nurgle's Chaos Lords in the realm and spread havoc for centuries in the name of Chaos. Torglug would experience a sort of crisis of faith when Sigmar's forces eventually reclaimed the realm and Torglug himself was struck down by Sigmar's avatar, the Celestant Prime. However, instead of going to the realm of Chaos like all other champions who failed the Dark Gods, Torglug found himself before Sigmar who saw his doubts and the disgust he felt deep down and deemed him worthy of absolution. Sigmar then purified Torglug's soul back into Tornus using powerful magic and resurrected him as a Stormcast Eternal (demigod) in order to fight for redemption. So in conclusion, I would say that a Chaos Marine could be redeemed in both body, mind, and soul but it would require both the marine to want to be redeemed AND a god-tier amount of power to break their connection to the Dark Gods and repair their corrupted bodies.

I don't think it is a matter of if they can be redeemed, but more of how could they be. Like what would they have to do, undergo, or endure to be redeemed. This would make it that some of the chapters that were not as corrupted might have to do something pretty understandable, but than others that were vastly more corrupted an turned from the emperor would have to do/undergo things nearly impossible. Imagine what they would have to do to reclaim their soul, fighting to a place in the warp that might hold their soul an reclaim it for instance.

It ultimately depends upon whether you are querying if they can truly be "redeemed" of their taint (as in re-enter the protection which had they'd previously known under the Emperor's light gleaming upon their Body & Soul (Almost, universally answered in the negative) or if they can merely come to an accepting of something nearing remorse or at the very least regret, and decide merely to find a form of "Name Redemption" a cleansing upon their tarnished legacy, or honor (but, lacking the possibility of ever purifying their bodies or soul of it's inabsolvable taint) purchased only through atonement by acting against their patrons with honest contrition. Defying their dread host for the Emperor although, knowing it's in spite of their souls remaining forever forfeit regardless. (This, although very much possible... it's a choice that's extremely unlikely to be made... and even more an unquestionably daunting road to set down upon even for an Adeptus/Legionnaires Astartes.) Compound this further, most Astartes who have followed the eight-fold path far enough to be declared excommunicate traitorous have like fallen far beyond caring about their legacy or perceived honor within Imperial Archives or by remembrancers let alone even considering or more laughably succumbing to something they'd consider as universally hindering as remorse...

Another example of a chaos marine fully devoted to one of the chaos god being able to find some form of redemption, was in the short story "The Ancient Awaits" When a Thousand Sons sorcerer (sorry, can't remember his name now) and his Raptorae found Ancient Rylanor from the Emperor's Children legion on Istvaan 3 10k years after the Istvaan Atrocity. Rylanor sent a beacon to lure Fulgrim so he could slay him by detonating a virus bomb, which had been contained by the sorcerer. Rylanor would be ripped from his sarcophagus by Fulgrim, who tried to convince the dreadnought to join hil. Rylanor's words of loyalty to the Emperor and his hatred toward his primarch had somehow inspired the sorcerer to let the virus bomb detonate, stating that Rylanor deserved better than any of them

There is a finite line between the renegade, and the heretic. Not every renegade is a heretic, but most heretics turned renegade prior to their heresies. The Bedab War and Siege of Vraks are both good examples of once (mostly) altruistic resistances with home of changing the systems that the Imperium was forced to work with, only to sour with the dark powers that first suggested these things. And more often than not, when a smaller force realizes the full breath of danger they must face against with the combined Imperium, the Ruinous powers becomes that much more appealing, and thus more likely to lead to damnation with no remorse.

I was going to make the argument that a person of devout enough faith, such as a living saint, could purge the taint of chaos from a corrupted marine if they were truly repentant. But if a fully corrupted individual's soul belongs to their patron god, it sounds like the ONLY person that could truly free them would be the Emperor Himself. Maybe if the Emperor would be to regain more of His consciousness and power, He could barter with/battle the gods for His faithful's souls, much like Chegorach does with Slaanesh.

Chaos used the traitors to do the majority of damage to the imperium, but if none of the primarchs and legions betrayed the emperor, would they have had the power to defeat chaos? The emperor wouldn’t have been mortally wounded, all primarchs would be fighting for humanity, Malcador would still live, and the amount of marines and titans would be greater the after the heresy.

I would say based on your actions against the Imperium. But it would also be depending on who's deciding who deserves that chance, so if you had lets say Dorn judging every traitor astartes coming through, he would most likely put them all into the ground and use the remains as a platform for a new fortress. Girlyman on the other hand MIGHT give them a chance if he sees they are actually worthy of it redemption but would also be just as reluctant to crush their skull like Asmodai in a room full of people who know the secrets of the Dark Angels.

Assuming it was more than a last minute thing on their death bed they could have years to kill enemies of mankind, destroy fellow chaos worshipers and aliens like the Tyranids. It's a matter of balance I suppose. How many worlds must you save to make up for those you destroyed? Can it ever be enough and does it even matter if your eternal soul is still damned in the end? Or does it take actually killing a chaos god some how and freeing your soul to really count?

The greatest example is cptn. Vandred of the NL. Or better known as the Exaulted. In his last moments he gave a big fat FU to the demon that possessed him. But it is a fascinating theory that traitors very well might be continuing to worship chaos bc they know that they are screwed for eternity if they turn against their gods.

I do enjoy your work. You are now a legend in the imperium that true, but even legend are not safe from the dark power of the immaterium it seems. The only fact of bringing a question like this to the mind of the weak could mean only one thing and one thing only. HERESY !!! And how we deal with heresy ? Us the true son of the emperor 40k theories? WITH FIRE !!! You maybe have forgotten so , when you have commit the ultimate sin of heresy trying to trade heresy with power but WE HAVE NOT.

Just going to say, most of the rank and file Astartes didn't really "choose" to become chaos. And 95% of them are dead at this point. So the only ones really left are the named ones who did choose.. so no one to really "save"

since the warp seems to work on belief i'd assume the problem of "eternal damnation" is more to do with a corrupted marine that came to his senses believing he's not worthy of absolution than actually being damned... but then again...the chaos gods are the embodiment of a specific trait so as long as they maintain that belief/trait i'd assume they could not be free.

I would believe so personally. Anyone can have a change of heart and redeem themselves if they so wished. However when it comes to those blessed by chaos it seems unlikely their malicious patrons can be rebuffed save by the Emperor's power.

When the Emperor's life casket fails, the very heart of the Imperium will fall to Chaos. So, unless they find another alternative/contingency against the ruinous powers, they are effectively screwed. And then the Tau can move in and mop up, lol!

My own space marine chapter are renegades due their opposition to the inquisition and the way they treated the celestial lions chapter. They also disapprove of the way the imperium is run. While being renegades they still protect humanity. They will go to great lengths to protect civilian life and the people they believe the imperium walks all over. I've written them a sort of proper knights and good guys, sort of like the salamanders and space wolfs
