Can This Tiny Fan STOP the Sony ZV-E1 From Overheating?!

My Sony ZV-E1 has been overheating on me so I bought the Ulanzi fan to try and keep it cool. Does it work?
In this video I share my thoughts as to whether or not this fan does a good job and if it makes me want to keep my Sony ZV-E1.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
If you want to support the channel more than just a like/sub/comment you could buy me a coffee (though I might buy a beer instead!): www.buymeacoffee.com/sahdlife I really appreciate it. Thanks 👊

First, thank you for addressing the fan issue I didn’t even think about it till this video popped up. If you’re interested, to answer your questions, overheating seems to be a common issue with most cameras shooting 4K 60. So my advice so far is by a smart phone, in the last two years by a camera with a fan, built-in, or look into BlackMagic, Linux, or Nikon. Those cameras have seemly cracked the non-overheating issue. As for Sony cameras that are inexpensive that don’t seem to overheat the VVE 10 seems immune to overheating, miraculously and it’s not as expensive as the other non-overheating cameras Sony makes. Thanks!

Cool take! I will keep that in mind 👊 To be honest I haven't had much issues with overheating when I DON'T use the Creator app. I just got a little excited about it once I realized I could use it... then disappointed by it when I realized I couldn't use it for long lol. Now I just use it at the start of my shoot and I'm happy with the workflow. I HAVE gone back to 30fps but we'll see, I might try 60 again and see what happens.

Cool test, SAHD! If you hadn't bought the fan, you wouldn't know if it would increase the overheating time. Now you know (and so do we ☺) that it doesn't help much ! The thing is: FX30 or Fx3 are the solutions for 4k/60 but in general people only use 4k 60p for slow motion b-rolls. That´s something to consider 😀!

I found there is no camera that can match ALL the features in the E1 no matter how much money you throw at it - until now. The A9 III has ALL the features of the E1 and does not over heat - at 3 times the price lol. Now is when the compromises verses price thought patterns come in. I don't really care about the global shutter so the feature set and overheating issues are what I find appealing. If was flush with money I wouldn't even give it a thought. Until then I have to work with the E1 or hope the same set of features arrive in a camera without the global shutter and pricing of the A93. Nice video, thumbs up 👍👍👍

Thanks! I almost feel like I need to do a final video talking about the ZV-E1 because perhaps my last few videos make it seem that I don't love this camera. I do love it. And now that I've gone back to a workflow that the camera can handle it still seems like it's in a league of its own, especially at the price. The A9iii... jeez eh? What a camera. I remember seeing the video when they were hyping it and it looked incredible. Then I saw the price and haven't looked at it again. I'm right there with you. Though I saw your video on the FX-30 and that one has me thinking a bit. Nice channel! And thanks for the comment 👊

@@thesahdstudio I have an FX30 here (not mine) and it is exactly what the E1 should be . . . without the slick features the E1 has. I was ready to change to it, but no dice lol. I am enjoying the E1 with the 11mm Sony lens. The lens is a crop lens, but one unique feature the E1 has, it will not automatically drop to a crop sensor mode. When I use that lens, I use Dynamic Active stabilization and it brings it in perfect. The special thing the E1 does that NO other camera will do, is it will not "double crop" when in apsc view. To compare, my Panasonic full frame frame S52 with s full frame. Put a crop form lens on it and it switches to 1.5 crop mode. Turn on stabilization and it again crops in further. The E1 doesn't do that double crop. Canon, Nikon, all OTHER Sony cameras all double crop :)

I haven't looked hard enough.. Nikon Z8 is alot better (as it should be, since it's more expensive), and it doesn't overheat. On top of that it offers internal RAW, ProRES, 8k up to 60fps without a crop, plus all the 4K modes as well, not to mention it's build better, and doubles as an amazing photography camera, and offers dual card slots for back up recording.

Which is why the zv-e1 is such a steal of a deal for making KZread videos.

The camera is so small that everything you plug into it makes the other features LESS usable you know? The mic input is already in a bad spot and covers the top of the flippy screen. Having another input in front of the screen would be annoying as sometimes you use the touch features on the screen. It would be fine I'm sure though and having a nice BIG monitor would be just so nice to have... and like you are implying, it probably wouldn't drain the battery like bluetooth does from the Creator app. Too bad I sold all my monitors recently lol! I wonder how much of a difference it would make with an external monitor connected instead of using the Creators App on the iPad. Maybe the problem could be solved if Sony would release a software update which would enable an optional setting for a higher video streaming compression rate ( lower quality ) and therefor stream less data over WIFI. My guess is that compressing the video in realtime requires lot of power in any case though.

@@thesahdstudio yes just emailed Ulanzi. I bought just when it was first released, think it was only $18 but it’s knackered. I shoot 24/30 depending if in PAL / NTSC country (live in the UK but travel to States a lot) and do a lot at 120, never tend to use 60. My ZVE1 is back with Sony at the moment as I get a lot of hot pixels appearing (only seen in very dark environs at high ISO but they can suddenly just appear after 15 mins even when I’ve just run pixel mapping). Hot pixel issue seems to be triggered by heat on sensor. No reviewers of ZVE1 report this, albeit someone else told me they had same issue. Just been to Walt Disney World and had to either cut in or not use some of my dark footage due to 3 white hot pixels, which did then disappear (when it ran pixel mapping no doubt) but others then appear.

@@thesahdstudio no they are on the sensor. You know how pixel mapping runs regularly on start up? That is capturing the pixels and mapping them out. Try a test. Do the pixel mapping. Then run the camera as normal let it heat up. Maybe do a bit of 120fps so it gets quite hot if you want to speed the process. Then go in a very dark room and film with high ISO. Then go watch that footage on a monitor. You may be surprised to see in the dark footage at high ISO, white hot, but sometimes blue or red pixels. They come on this camera all the time. I’ve sent mine back for evaluation.

Why not just flip the screen on the camera or use the hdmi out and connect a small monitor/TV? That should definitely generate less heat. Also 24fps doesn’t look good on most monitors/phones as they’re in 60 hz refresh rate. It drops frames ...

Oh I always use the fllippy screen but it's too small to make sure my desk is level or something isn't right in the shot. Now that I'm only using the iPad at the beginning and not letting it run the camera is just fine. I considered plugging in an external monitor but I like keeping it small and efficient.

I don't know, I think the image quality it gets for the price is almost unrivalled. It comes at a HUGE tradeoff though like you are saying... limited shooting modes, it overheats if you shoot for too long etc. But in the right circumstances, like I use 99% of the time, it's the best camera there is for the price/size.

First of all why would you do Talking Head videos in 4K-60? Do them in 4K-24 or 4K-30. There’s no point in shooting a talking head vid in 60 frames. In fact if you do want to do 60 fps then do 1080. It will save memory space and mitigate overheating. But again 60 Frames is for action videos Second the whole point of the ZV-E1 is to strip the body down from the FX3/A7s3 body and maintain the sensor. If you want to use it for long video go buy the A7S3 or FX3 or even the FX30. Even the A7iv doesn’t overheat like the ZV-E1

  • @thesahdstudio

Yeah I mean if you know Sooner cameras than you know that about the sensor... But when you just buy it based on their marketing you might have different expectations like I did.
