I've been using this ap for quite a while now and it can really shock you at first how 'off' we can be (especially on the high note palm keys in my case....quite sharp). I've found It's important to blow long notes for a good while before attempting to fine tune; as the saxophone goes through a series of subtle tuning changes as the the metal of the crook and upper part of the instrument warm up more quickly than the rest of it ( I'm assuming this is more of an issue on the larger instruments because I don't play soprano or alto).

i've noticed that a few sax players start a note by just blowing into the mouthpiece.. I was taught to say tah.. meaning using the tongue.

For long tones, whether you tongue the note or not doesn't really matter, since your main focus is fine tuning your embouchure.

The tuner is tuned to concert pitch (like a piano). He is playing a tenor sax which is a transposing instrument and is tuned to Bb. So when he plays a C on his sax the app, by default set to concert pitch which most instruments are tuned to, will hear a Bb. Unless one plays a transposing instrument, they generally won’t know this. For demonstration purposes, Dan should have set this tuner to tenor saxophone and when he says, F the tuner will also register an F instead of an E. It is truly an amazing app.

He’s playing a transposed instrument. Whenever he sees a C in his music, the actual pitch is a Bb. His instrument is transposed a whole step up.

True, but I play more than one sax, (and other instruments too) so keeping it a concert pitch is more than helpful, I then do the transposition in my head.

Watching the real time sound wave drives me crazy on that app. For me, the + or - numbers are easier to concentrate on for getting it in tune. Trying to keep it as close to 0 as possible.

Great app. Thanks for pointing it out. A question I've always had: If I play a note and it's flat or sharp, how do I know if it is off because of the position of the mouthpiece on the neck or if it is off because of a problem with my embouchure?

+Cass Stevens great question - I’ll need to answer it on the next Q&A vlog, but in short tune to a concert A by adjusting the mouthpiece on the neck & the rest should be embouchure

Hang on just a minute there. Wow. Slow it all down. Stop. I came here because my app clearly is not set for my Yamaha YAS280 ALTO. Yep ALTO. So how do I change it for this sax. Thanks to all and special thanks to the person that can answer my question.

When being in ´sound´, you can click ´transpose´ at the bottom. It´s also in ´analysis´ in the left corner
