Can The Land Plane Save Us From Buying More Rock?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The driveway at Tractor Time with Tim's family farm needed a lot of work. This road gets a lot of heavy use from big tractors and semi trucks causing the road to become hard packed. Tim offered to bring the Tufline Land plane to see if we could fix the driveway without buying more rock.

This is still one of my favorite videos of yours Tim. Soon I will be doing the same thing to my 900’ gravel drive for the first time. I have a 1025R and 5’ planer and stopped by to review this video again. I have 75 acres of woods but all around me are large farms. Now that I’m more familiar with the area, I have much more appreciation for the size of your dad’s operation. It’s fantastic!

I just love the way a land plane cleans up a gravel driveway. I'd love to have one but really can't justify the price, especially considering I already have a box blade that, when operated with some finesse, will put a good finish on my gravel driveway too. Great video as usual, Tim.

That landplane is the cat's meow. My blade, even when angled, leaves ridges of stone by the edge of the grass that requires extra passes to get rid of. It also brings up dirt that churns with the stone because it doesn't ride across the stone on flanges like the landplane has. It was wonderful to see your daddy out and about Tim. May God Bless and watch over him, all of your family, and all of us TTWT Channel viewers during these troubling times. You and your family rock Tim. 🙂👍🙋‍♂️

I just got a 6’ land plane without rippers Monday. I’ve found to level and equalize gravel from one end of the road to the other is to level the implement and to make strait passes back and forth. Depending on how uneven your road is you might have to spend all day, but when you are finished it will look great.

I applaud your keeping the grader flat! Most of the videos on KZread of this type of implement typically have the back of the grader not even touching the ground. I typically do like you did and put a little pressure on the back blade. I think with the scarifiers digging it would be a good idea to have the blades not touching the ground?

No, Dad was never a "disciplinarian". We had rules, of course! He had and still has high expectations for us. However, something about his "way" makes us all WANT to do our best to live in such a way to please him. Severe discipline wasn't required much. Just a "frown" or visual displeasure from Dad was sufficient to cut me to the heart. Hard to explain this in a few words, and to folks who haven't experienced such a wonderful father.

Works well if you have a good base of graded rock. Where I live its all natural rock, and thus its mixed large and small and packed for millions of years, so this will either bounce or get hung on a bolder and either ruin it or stop the tractor. I use a grader and then a landscape rake to move the boulders off the road and then again to finish it. What I don't like about these is the rock goes over the top of the blade, that isn't what you want to do, you want to roll it right then back left and feather it off on the second blade to crown the road

I have a land plane with scarifiers. The 3320 doesn't have enough traction to pull a land plane with scarifiers in hard packed dirt/gravel. While you can't stall the motor, the land plane with the scarifiers down will bring the tractor to a complete stop with all four wheels turning - even with all of the tires loaded with liquid. I end up using the hydraulic top link to tilt the land plane forward, and then set the 3-point hitch height so that only the scarifiers are engaged and slowly break up the hard packed ground until I can tilt the land plane back level and use the blades to work the surface.

I don’t have a driveway. I have a roller coaster track from all the washboarding. 😬 First on my to-do list as soon as it stops raining is to go at it with the backhoe, pull all the rocks that have come to the surface, and backfill with dirt. Then we’re going to need about $500 worth of gravel delivered. Can’t complain too much though - the last time it’s had attention was in 1986 when it was installed by the contractor who built the house.

Backing up, like your dad did at the concrete pad, works well. He has the touch with that 3 point lever. On our road, Linda and I team up with the 3046R and the Gator 620i to do what we call "Pot hole" patrol. First, I use the box blade with scarifiers down one notch tilted a little forward to rough up the area around the potholes (we have between 1.5 to 3 miles to do depending on weather and neighbors work schedules). Once the potholes are roughed up and leveled a little bit (with the box blade leveled first, then tilted up in front) we go get gravel with the loader and put it in the gator. Linda drops it on the areas where the road is a little thin, and makes sure to cover the areas where there were potholes. Then I use the front end loader and the Blade to scatter the piles. Then I use the blade on the edges of the road (tilting it to the right a bit) to pull gravel out of the "ditches" and put it up on the road. Takes about 3 - 5 passes to move the gravel from the ditches to the center from each side. Then I hook up the land plane and do what you did on your dads place. With the top and tilt hydraulics, I can tune the front and rear weighting to pull (front down) or spread (front up) as required. Gathering a load and dropping it works sometimes to fill in a little low spot. Like at the fuel tanks...leave a few piles in the road then back over them to push up to the tank. Great job...great camera work too. That thing is one of the right tools. Works best the day after it has rained to soften things up. If really dry, no amount of passes will fill potholes.

the big mistake people make is not digging out the subsoil, you have to do it like you are building a highway for heavy traffic, clay will rise through the gravel when wet as the gravel is compressed through the soft stuff under load thus clay on top gravel on the bottom, Me and others gave this advice to a shipping container re-seller, he never took heed, his yard is a complete basket case and no matter what he does the slush continues to happen, when a dump truck with 13 tonnes of gravel drove over my yard it never made any impression.

Keep dumping rock on it. It will eventually firm up. For the first few years, it takes a new coat every year. After that, it doesn't take much.

@@TractorTimewithTim i am doing a part of my yard, i have done other sections before which turned out all weather perfect, i have reactive clay, gets rock hard when it dries and soft as when its wet, i remove it because I don't want it coming up through the gravel, using rocks are useful in some situations, container guy used rocks, he never listened, far better for him to remove the subsoil clay as his yard is slush when its wet, he has dumped many many loads onto it, gravel from the crusher not cheap when its by the truck load.

I think I’m gonna build a land plane. I can get the cutting edges through a local steel supply. Looks simple enough to do

I’m going to make a similar device that attaches to my box blade; with the cutting edge of the box blade being set a little above the plane cutting edges.

@@darkwinter6028 I made a box blade similar to this but instead of a straight blade I used Scarifier blade. Looks similar to a comb . Added wheel like system to the rear. With hydraulic top link you can adjust on the fly. To either dig or lay out dirt. Works great for loam or driveways.

Tim, would happen to know where I can get one of them remote top link adjusters? Smiling broadly! Would you say that a landplane is worth getting if you already own a boxblade?

Ha! The top link adjuster employed here is VERY high maintenance! If you can afford, yes I think the land plane is an incredible driveway tool.

Ok. Now I want one. But the war dept isn't going to go with the cost of it for just our driveway. Have you tried it out leveling a field or anything? I'd like to be able to tell her what else I could use it for.

I'd love one of these for my 1/2 mile gravel road but they cost a fortune! You can buy 3 box blades for the price of one land plane. It's nuts.

@@TractorTimewithTim The least expensive one I can find under 72" is $1,149 at Rural King. The one you feature in your videos appears to be well above that in price. At that point I'm literally 3X the cost of the box blade we bought from Tractor Supply Co. a few years ago.

Side note: After shopping around some more, I get the idea that prices have gone up substantially on these attachments, perhaps due to COVID and supply and demand issues? The box blade we have is now $799 and it was significantly less money just a couple of years ago.

@@4-LOW First, I'm not sure you need a 72"...unless you have a larger tractor than me. Second, I suspect you should look at the price of box blades again. Remember that steel prices have gone up dramatically recently.
