At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.
So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

I've driven my (performance blue) i30n almost daily for the last year, and it STILL puts a smile on my face. You can change the car's feel and response drastically (depending on your mood) with a push of a button, so it's VERY hard to get bored with this tactile beast.... In my opinion, it's still the best value for money hot hatch out there.

Top tip with tyres. When the factory Pirelliss need to be replaced. Don't fit the Pirelli's again. Move to Michilin PS4s. Better dry grip, 1000x times better wet and cold grip, and will easily last 45k with spirited driving, where as the Pirelli's offer nothing after 5k, bald by 15k, and feel like slicks on grass in cold and wet weather.

3:25 ... And We ( the viewers ), generally find, that you guys are doing a good job staying as objective as possible, pointing out strengths, weaknesses and when personal bias comes in you explicitly mention it as well. I understand why there's so many review sources for new cars and so few for used ones... so much more detail and info to cover/go over and mention. New car is easy; at best you cover depreciation and "expected reliability" that's it. When a performance oriented car gets a "I had to go deep and still couldn't find anything wrong with them"- level or reliability from a mechanic, that's an applause and admiration deserved by me.

I'm an ex I30N owner, and the ONLY issues I had with it, were the stereo isn't that great, but you can turn that off completely and just enjoy the noise! Only other issue was I have a habit of resting my elbow on the drivers door arm rest, and after a very short period of time, an indent formed where my elbow would go, and it wouldn't return to it's original shape. Other than that, probably a top 3 best car of all the cars I've owned, and to be honest, I'm now wishing it was still parked on my driveway.

I have a related car in France the Kia Cee'd with 7sp DSG. From the same factory as the i30N. It has the same body shell as the i30N. Issues that cross over to the i30N include the satnav which failed just out of it's 3 year warranty. So we drive with a blank screen which is annoying and we lost the rear camera. Cost of replacement is too high. The windscreen pillars are wide and it takes some care to see around them at intersections and roundabouts. No other issues. I am thinking of an i30N when I return to Oz in June. If the hatch is still available? I don't mind that it is at the end of it's model life. The last ones may be the best.

Owned a fastback for 2 years. Had a weird issue with the programmable electric seat selector which malfunctions from time to time. Biggest negatives on the car 1) Soft paint which gets chipped easily. 2) turning circle is abysmal and means doing multi point turns in supermarkets. 3) reversing camera gets covered with road grime making reversing in those supermarkets extremely difficult with the very limited view. One of the big advantages of the Fast Back model is the enormous boot, easily fits 3 suitcases and more. It’s a missile when I want to play on the back roads and I can easily get carried away as it is so competent and fantastic fun.

  • @dingbat159

I can't really comment on point 1, but I can definitely confirm point 2. I tried driving my 2021 i30 N in the supermarket and found it very difficult to get past the fresh produce and into the meats section. Going down the aisles was a nightmare! These big supermarket chains really just haven't set up their stores to allow cars to drive in them, which is very disappointing. I don't think the staff and other customers minded me driving around in there, but I couldn't really hear them over the pops and bangs from the exhaust. As for point 3, I think a bit of watermelon juice may have become smeared over my reversing camera, which made it a bit tricky to reverse through the dairy section. I had to look in my rear view mirrors, and as someone who likes to go fast in my N, I just hate looking back. Otherwise, no complaints. Great car!

I’ve got a big, boring, C5 now and I can’t say I’m missing the Hyundai. C5 is lazy driving, very comfortable and can be driven onto verges without me worrying over damaging the wheels or spoiler. Less stressful overall, but clearly not ‘fun’.

I own the MY20 model N Luxury pack, and I can tell you with certainty that it does not have Adaptive Cruise Control, I have put 24,000Kms on it so far and love driving it everyday. When I first purchased it I done a trip to Melbourne from NSW, and my first day driving around Melbourne I had a FPV Turbo falcon wanting to race me, so the next set of lights we went for it and I left him for a good 3-4 car lengths, funny how he did not want to come near me at the next set of lights I was absolutely LMAO. Then a few days later I had a Commodore SSV 6.0 litre wagon try to give me a go and same thing left him behind me for the first 3 gears, then I slowed down as I knew there was a speed camera ahead under a overpass, the tripper in the SS just kept going I swear he must have been doing around 170-190kms when he went past the Speed Camera poor bugger that would have been a nice fine coming his way not to mention the suspension of his license for a good 3 months or more. I must admit I had a few bugs with mine from brand new but 99% of them were fixed under warranty. The only problem I still have is that the rev matching does not always work when going down from 2nd to 1st no biggie I just bleep the throttle anyway even with rev match on in the lower gears. Must admit with N mode on if you drive on a crappy road your kidney's will let you know as well as your back if you suffer from back pain as I do. All in all its beaut little zippy as street car, if you want to look after the engine make sure to do an oil + filter change every 5,000kms instead of the 10,000 your supposed to do. I had a VL turbo prior to buying the N and changed oil every 5 thousand and never had a problem, even after 260,000kms the turbo had no play what so ever.

Damm you're lucky. Mine is almost made of new parts in two years and 20000km. 1. Wind noise from sunroof. Dealer tried to adjust but eventually changed the entire assembly. Problem still persisted albeit on higher speed. 2. Roof lining started rattling. Got replaced. 3. Noise from the front suspension when steering. Everything that was attached to the suspension got replaced. Rattling still there but less. 4. Roof rattling again, this time they used more adhesive. Finally solved. 5. Windnoise from sunroof got louder again. They tried to adjust and eventually replaced all seals after i asked them to try that instead of ordering another sunroof. 6. Noises from the front suspension again...seems they have found the culprit this time and will change the entire e-LSD assembly when they get the parts. 7. I also have rattling from the clutch when i am in neutral and let the pedal go. Noise goes away when i step on the pedal. I smelled clutch when i maneuvered onto a lift to get my wheels changed.....yet another problem.

But this is illegal from what i gathered. They tried to pull this one on me too but i got in touch with the Austrian Importer who then told me i had the same warranty as a German buyer. I managed to get a half decent price too, as I paid $44,500 AUD for the Luxury pack. I simply told the dealer I am offering $44,500 take it or I walk, to my delight they agreed. I even got the right hand front guard aligned correctly under warranty as they all stick out about 4-5mm from the drivers door. Then about 6 months later I had a Kangaroo jump out in front of me at 100kms an hour in the rain n dark which totaled the front guard and right side of nose cone, I was spewing so bad, but luckily I found a top notch panel beater who I got the insurance company to agree to pay to do the repair work. It’s probably for a cooling reason where they need a larger radiator or something and they couldn’t get the sensor to fit behind the Hyundai badge where they’d normally have it.

Here's a video idea: a general buyer's guide for used cars? (i.e avoid cars with sunroof, all technical service done at dealer, avoid certain "early" automatic gearbox types ect). What "features" to avoid (& why), which features to only go for only if we really want it (& why they're bad, i.e earlier prototype adaptive dampers), & what features are generally reliable if they're fitted (reversing camera, cruise control and such?) - most of this the regular buyer might know but the reasoning and especially how this tech ages is maybe interesting? I remember, especially back when I was first buying a car, I had spent a lot of time looking into and making a list of what was important (for me) and what I could ignore and what I straight up avoided.

I purchased a 2016 i30 Active CRDI which is one of the best cars I have purchased, the fuel economy is unbelievable on long trips I get 4.6 liters per 100kms pretty much runs on a smelly rag. The reversing camera is super clear day or night, and the sound system pumps so hard it amazed me. So then I bought the N model with Luxury Pack which they say has the premium sound system yeah sure, the standard i30 sound system is almost twice as loud as the N's so called premium system, even the speakers used in the standard model use a Neodymium magnet, where as in the N they use the old style magnets inferior if you ask me. Then the reversing camera in the N is total crap compared to the standard i30. The N was twice the price of the standard i30 yet comes with crappy sound system n reversing camera I was pretty pissed off about this.

My exhauast valve fell apart a it would cost like 2000€ if it wasn t under warranty. You can tell that buy hearing a rattling noise while reving that car, so watchout for that.

I am really interested in the i30nline premium and wondered if you could do a similar review as i was thinking of going dealer ex demo to avoid bastard owners as you call them lol. Huge fan of these things! Great fun and look great. My mate bought a performance blue one second hand with 19k on it. Love the colour and the car. He was kind enough to let me drive it on a couple Hyundai N owners day. Had a blast. Great engine, torqueeee and sounds good. The suspension is great, nice gear box, practical, and looks great imo, not too over the top. I'd take it over a GTI and prefer the looks to a type r, but... Everytime I was in it, despite the joy I was feeling, a significant part of me was wishing I was in my 86 instead.

Working on Hyundai's in America we don't have I30 N's but Veloster N's have the same powertrain when the tech mentioned the failure of the high pressure pumps, as they fail they over pressurize the fuel rail and the car will bog down past a certain rpm. I've seen it twice.

I have a 2020 fastback here in the UK and so far the only major issue I've had was water getting into the spoiler on the boot. It went into the service center and was repaired under warranty. They had to consult Hyundai Technical for advice and was told there were only 2 cars with this issue... mine was number 2!! I would suggest that if it's a used vehicle and it doesn't have the awful Pirelli P Zero tires and has either Micheline Pilot Sport 4 or 4S's or Good Year Eagle f1's, then the owner knows their stuff and has loved and looked after the car.

I habe one or better had. Buyed it as a used var. Was absolutely happy, got it foiled, had sole upgrades. Pretty much the best car for bringing emotions. Loved it everyday. There were nearly no Problems. Had one Problem with the window, got it fixed in one day with good help from Hyundai Center, but in the end it got crashed totally. Lost it yesterday. It's just destroyed with no chance to repbuild it. I had tear drops in my eyes because of how much I love this car. Definitely recommend this car to anyone who loves drive experience, good sound, doesn't need the highest interior uprgrades and just loves cars. Performance is great, is pretty fast and even is nice for long drives. Did over 1000km and in the end I felt good.

I owned the 1.6T (MY2018, sold/purchased 2019) as a first owner of the car. Let me tell you the list of things that went wrong, all covered under warranty: Exterior: - Plastic trim on the rear door faded - Clear coat peeled on driver's side door handle Mechanical: - the dual-clutch transmission failed and put the car into limp mode at around 20,000km. It was recalled under Hyundai and I had it replaced. - the actuator for the front driver's side e-brake failed and locked on (at around 50,000km) Interior: - When Hyundai installed my dash cam front, they broke the A pillar plastic on the driver's side - replaced after much toing and froing - When Hyundai updated the infotainment system, the new "auto-dim" when night time feature is really terrible... it blinds you at night time. I manually change it at night time. Much better before they updated it. Now let me tell you all the good things: It is a very comfortable seating position (6'1, 100kg) and the leather is still in great condition, 5 years later. It handles very well. It is pretty quick for a 1.6T, though I wish the 2.0T was out when I bought the car (though, the current i20 N have the 1.6T and it is lighter) the infotainment system is amazing, reliable and is very responsive. When I test drove all other hot-hatches, the infotainment systems SUCKED. The car basically drives itself with lane assist, adaptive cruise, auto-braking, brake hold etc. I am selling the car in 2 weeks to a dealership at 105,000km (serviced every 10,000km, or 6 months, whichever was sooner) and they are giving me $17,000.00 for it, which is a pretty decent resell value, for a car I really enjoyed. But, alas, I want to buy a BRZ and drive that around for the next 10 years or so.

Speaking as a first gen ex owner interior is functional and perfect. Seats not so great for long drives if you are tall. Infotainment was better than the same age Audi S3, I owned one after my Hyundai and regret selling mt Hyundai. High pressure fuel pump failures where common in earlier cars like mine and 6th bear sometimes stiff when car was cold but Hyundai sort of recall fixed it but you ad to report it. Hyundai Pirelli P Zero tyres last 7000 miles ish if driven moderately hard. The car makes a standard Golf GTI look like a much older car and is so much better to drive. Wheel hop is a major problem as the car tries to put down the power but you can fit coil overs and better tyres. Ride is quite firm in all settings. Road noise a bit loud at higher speeds. Exhaust on 2017 car epic. ALWAYS use Shell oil and genuine parts and every 5 years expect all fluids to need changing. Don't bother tuning unless its for track use a lot. Forge motorsport parts do bugger all to improve the car so don't waste your money.
