Can The 2019 Facelifted Jaguar XE P300 Really Be a Rival For Audi's All New A4 and S4?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today in Jag week, I am looking at this - the XE. Jaguar's replacement for the unloved X-Type, the XE is now five years old. But, a facelift for 2019 means the car is now updated and ready to take on the German opposition.... or can it?

I’d have a Jag over anything German anyday. German cars litter the streets as finance makes them so accessible. They are no longer are true classy prestige anymore. They are finance fodder and just common. Its novel and a joy to see a Jag, Lexus, Volvo. Yes they don’t have the badge snobbery appeal but that’s a good thing. Who wants to follow the crowd. Shame that engine sizes are down.

I agree with you totally. I wouldn’t be seen dead in the German cars, and not because they aren’t good, but because I hate following the crowd. But Jag needs to understand what they do well. My XF is pretty, but not spectacular, nice inside but not as good as many competitors, but with the 6 cyl supercharged and well sorted suspension/chassis it is an excellent car to drive. The performance vs price trade-off is excellent (especially if you buy with a few miles on the clock). That is why I drive it and why I wouldn’t ever buy one without the bigger engine.

RichieT5 I know exactly what you mean. I don’t really care how good the cars may be from BMudi-Benz, it’s like having an identical McDonalds, Costa Coffee, KFC and Starbucks in every town centre in the world. I can’t see how any of the above brands can be considered “prestige” when they are everywhere and completely uninspiring🙁

I bought the P250 HSE rear wheel drive in June 2019, and I don't have the issues seen in this "press" car. The climate controls work perfectly and I can get over 40MPG if I take it easy however the car is such an awesome drive I usually end up in the low 30s on my 30 mile commute. The 250 has plenty of get-up-and-go and keeps accelerating - no worries about under power or "running out of puff". Handling is superb, it's flat through bends and rides smoothly over the bumpiest roads. On a recent trip with 3 people and weekend luggage in the car the average MPG was over 42 at one point but ended on 37.4 due to some over enthusiastic overtaking! Something few mention in reviews is that I can start the car from my phone while I'm getting ready for work so by the time I leave the house the windows are demisted, ice is melted and the car interior is nice and toasty. I have never owned an Audi or a BMW but would not hesitate to buy another Jaguar XE.

As has already been said, you can’t compare petrol to diesel, not just as the technology is different but mpg is not like for like. Diesel is a denser fuel contains nearly 15% more energy (and CO2) per litre. A 40mpg petrol figure is actually more efficient than 45mpg diesel! A closer comparison is grams of CO2 per km. Diesel engines are inherently more efficient than equivalent petrol but not by nearly as much as is suggested by mpg figures. The best modern high compression petrol engines are just about on a par with diesel when you factor in the weight and emissions control penalty of the diesel if you look at efficiency and not mpg!

The XE only makes sense when you have the V6 supercharged. The sound it makes is immense and the mpg is excellent. Take this away you're not left with much. Oh and you are right, having owned a Cupra 290 my XES 380bhp is a proper hooligan and just as fun.

Very well reviewed as always. Enjoy your content. As an owner of a 2018 XE v6 Super AWD with a stage 2 tune..........all I can say is whatever complaints I may have as a daily driver with some of the interior inferior plastics and steering wheel buttons, etc, the driving experience is far better than any BMW 3 or 5 series or Audi a4 or MB c class that I have owned in the past. This car eats up American roads like no other car. The throttle mapping response and absolute inspiring exhaust note mixed with the supercharger whine is tremendously satisfying. It is a visceral driving experience as a saloon car that I look forward to every day. It is a car that regularly causes me to reflect on how much I enjoyed my ride home through all the traffic and city chaos when I walk into the house at the end of a long day. And with the 20 inch r-sport tires, it is a rare looking car amongst the thousands of German cars which was a factor in why I bought it in the first place.

The exterior is absolutely beautiful imo, if there’s one thing jaguar always gets on point, it’s the exterior designs. The only reason jaguar doesn’t sell as many cars as the Germans is because they’ve developed a bad reputation because of their reliability issues, which makes jags depreciate in value like crazy and that’s why people end up choosing the fancy German competitors. This a great car, way better than the a4 imo. Jaguar will always be the enthusiasts’ choice, and after all, IT’S A JAG.

Had 2 of these, the tech works better if you don't frantically turn the dials and press the buttons. Can be a little slow but it's quick enough. They upgraded the interior materials for the 2019 model, and to me it doesn't feel cheap at all, always mystifies me a little when journalists say that and then point to the bottom of the door cards that you basically never see or touch at all. Just like it mystifies me when they say the exterior design is bland. The proportions of the XE are perfect. I've been fortunate enough to look at these things a lot, and there are so many little understated design cues that maintain the Jaguar look but in a modern, compact appearance. On 20 inch wheels particularly, I think it's a handsome little car. I do agree though that the 20 inch wheels make the ride a little bumpy at slow speeds, but when you get on it the car comes alive. It is awesome to drive, so engaging and dynamic, and just fun - like a Jag should be! I'm disappointed they stopped the V6 but it just means I'll need to save up for a Project 8, but overall I think the XE is a very underrated car, which can basically be said for the entire Jaguar range right now.

I’ve had the P250 version for a few months now and I must say the XE makes much more sense at the lower end of the scale. My car was £38k list price, and it’s still a 250ps engine, and with the R-dynamic package and it’s RWD with sports suspension and it has all the tech as in the video apart from the camera rear view mirror. I would agree about the handling, I had also been told how good it was but wasn’t prepared for just how good it actually is, it doesn’t feel like anything else I’ve driven. I’ve used the car everyday since I’ve had it and all the tech has performed perfectly - I was worried about that before I got the car as you hear things about JLR electronics but actually everything is fantastic. I actually really like the heater and heated seat controls - on the road you can reach over, push the dial and then move the dial round a notch or two and it will always adjust the heated seat accordingly, if you just twist the dial back and forth as in the video you won’t have a good experience at all! If I had to criticise my P250 model I would say the engine lacks character, there is enough power there certainly but the delivery is very linear and totally without drama, maybe that’s what people want these days? Anyway overall I couldn’t have got a similar BMW or Alfa at that list price so I’m very happy with my choice, it looks great, the tech really adds to the driving experience, it handles brilliantly, is a really comfortable cruiser and I’ve averaged 38.5mpg since I’ve owned it which is good enough for me. I definitely wouldn’t spend £55k on one though!

Looks to me like a computer boot up issue, if you watch again it’s when first switched on, first with the main screen after the jag logo, then the heater control immediately after starting the engine. Once up and running I don’t think there’s any delay. I suspect the sequence of switching on and attempting to use was deliberate to show this. This could be avoided if all these microcontrollers (little computers) booted up as soon as the car was unlocked and stayed running a fixed period after the ignition was turned off (in case of a short stop. This might minimise the effect but increase battery load. I assume rivals do it this way.

This much improved facelifted XE ( looks best in light blue or grey ! ) is now more competitive against its rivals & like myself many would choose the Jag just because it is different & they don't want to follow the herd buying German cars which are no longer rare & exclusive & are on every street in the country along with concerns about maintenance after the warranty runs out & used values of hundreds of thousands of Audi's BMW's & Mercedes that will struggle to sell on the 2nd hand market , means those attractive finance rates for the German trio can't last forever !.

I spent a week with a Mercedes E400d last September and took it to Scotland. I liked it quite a lot. Great engine, gearbox, headlights and it was a nice place to be. However, l didn't once check the quality of the door casings or dashboard. I think it might have had HUD but I didn't notice it. What bugged me was the "tech". It had built in sat nav but l knew where l was going so didn't use it. I couldn't work out how the sat nav worked because once I had it l touched one of the controls on the wheel and lost it. But with time you will get used to it, which will be the same as the Jag. What made it look a bit special was the black paintwork and big AMG wheels. Without those it would have just looked like an E220 with big wheels. In 6 or 7 years it will be picking up drunks outside nightclubs and taking people to airports. In 10 years it will be parked up outside Nairobi Airport waiting for business. I think there's a lot of rubbish spoken about trim you'll almost never touch. If you join the 3-Series club you'll see plenty of them. Including 318s made to look like M3s and plenty of M3 owners who will be annoyed by that. Maybe we should stop being annoyed by trivial details and just drive the damn thing.

The old 3.0L s/c "S" was 194 g/km vs the new P300 which emits 167 g/km of CO2 (Parkers website). Ironically the later cars are regarded to be quite good, although the move to becoming pretend-Jaguar, in combination with Jaguar releasing both the S-Type and X-Type, was a big, final, mistake. I can't help but think BMW bought Rover for Mini and Land Rover.

hard to get passionate about this in a deeply 'want one' kind of way. it just does everything in such a flat kind of way. if you don't want standard German then the Giulia seems a far better left field position...this seems to hedge its bets without being one thing or the other and misses on all. JLR already made a mess of its engine ranges when so many are diesels without (non hyper) petrol options ( look at the estates) and now dropping v6's here and in the f type shows some odd thinking. As you note it is not clear why you would choose this...

Great review. But too much unjustified grievance. I took delivery of my brand new 2024 P300 two weeks ago, and with a very tight engine, I am consistently hitting 37-38 mpg on motorway drives. Also, I find the sound system to be acceptable - not great. For reference my previous car was another great: a 2020 M340i which I greatly enjoyed but don’t really miss now having the XE.

A great review on the jag this car was on my list and I took one out in the summer I did like it on the hole however I did think the engine was a bit of a let down. it wasn't slow by any means but not that quick ether and when u consider how much it is I could get an s5 or 440 for the same money and they r better cars the jag doesn't really make much sense I think the stinger is more of a rival then the German cars and that is 15k less and has a much better engine and audio system

Yeah, the console freeze. It's like when you want to disconnect the battery. You should wait 5 to 10 mins after switching off the engine, in order to let all the control units fully shut down. So you have to wait for that same kind of time frame before getting the display back after a freeze.

Lease rates for the A4 start around CAD 500 + taxes, in Montreal, Canada. All models have quattro, start with the 2.0 turbo engine, auto gearbox and are reasonable well equipped in the basic form. With almost no down payment. Looks elegant, drives well and has great space and boot. It's a no brainer if you look for that type of car. Other brands including Jaguar seem to demand a hefty down payment.

I heard that the new 395hp straight 6 engine in the Range Rover was so long that they couldn't fit that it the latest facelift F types (and I'm guessing also the XE too). I also heard rumours that Jaguar were going to get the 4.4 litre V8 from BMW to replace their supercharged 5.0, so perhaps Jaguar could look into using the B58 straight 6 too - although I guess that would be a bit too similar to the 3 series, and the F type would be too similar to the Supra (but just heavier).

Honestly, all these low end exec cars are a little lacking for the money, although this particular one less so. However, if you want a car of this sort of trim level, you are better off with a top of the range Ford Mondeo or Skoda Octavia, even if they do have slightly less power, because of how much cheaper they are for a similar trim. Edit: Or, as I just found out, Volvo have the S60 which is amazing in this category.

But I’d still buy a 3 series if I wanted a sports saloon as the bmw is still the benchmark. Shame they’re all automatics though. The 5 series is a good looking machine too. The only jag I’d consider buying is the xj220. But at 500k i wouldn’t buy one, for that money id buy a 93 twin supercharged Aston Martin vantage, beautiful car.!!

The comments on the fuel consumption are basically true. On a run of 170 miles up to just north of Aberdeen, most of the route on dual carriageway with average speed cameras so cruise control set at 73mph it did 35mpg on the way up and 33mpg on the way down in my P300 XE, traffic a little heavier on way back, light on way up. Roundabouts and Dundee do cause a bit of stop start. Go to 80mph and mpg drops like a stone. However a trip to Glasgow of 20 odd miles taking it easy at 62mph on the 70 stretch of motorway (only about 6 miles, the rest is limited to 50 or 60 ) and speed limit on country roads in Ecco mode and I got 39mpg and that included driving round Glasgow at 20mph max in heavy traffic and having to go to two different car parks as the first was full. Sounds boring but driving like a maniac gets me to town only 5mins quicker, busy country roads and 3 lanes if traffic on motorway with little chance if cruising at 70 let alone 80. Average on normal short runs is 29mpg. Yet my old S Type 2.5l V6 did 35mpg flying across France and Germany, allowing for 90mph on autobahn, 85mph across all France and 3hrs of gridlock on autobahn near Munich so at speed it is likely closer to 40mpg. On the way home we did 1250miles in just under 24hrs as we got bad news so headed back over the Glockglochner at 5am and hit 125mph on autobahn and 100 thru France and still got 30mpg. But at home it averaged 24 or 25 mpg the rest of the year. It all boils down to what gives best year round mpgs. If you do motorways then modern 2l turbo is worse than a normally aspirated V6, if you do a lot of town or country roads then the turb is better. Jag, like all other manufacture has to get emissions down on average over its whole range or be hit by EU penalties so they are all going 4 pot with dirty great turbo. Power when you need it, but bloody thirsty if you use it ......and the jag xe turbo cuts in at around 1500rpm which is about 60mph in 8th gear......that is life for a 21st century petrolhead boy
