Can’t two best bros just be best bros?

Not a martial arts related video. 21 years ago, I flew down to Buenos Aires, Argentina to be an LDS missionary. Within a day of walking the streets of this southern South American country, I had been kissed by dozens of men- and two years later, I had been kissed by more men than I could count- for in Argentina, a kiss is a traditional greeting. Being raised in the USA, this shocked me and turned my world view upside down. How could an entire culture not only be 100% okay with heterosexual men kissing each other, but strongly encourage it as a social norm? Fast forward a decade or so, and I found myself in mainland China. No, heterosexual Chinese men did not kiss each other like their Argentina counterparts, but they acted in many other ways that would simply not be accepted in my home country as heterosexual behavior.
So I put this on the back-burner of my mind as a cultural oddity until the new Star Wars movies came out and people started talking about Poe & Finn as closeted gay men. How strange, I thought. Just because they act like best bros doesn't mean they're romantically in love. Hut to the people of the internet, this is exactly what it meant: heterosexual men can no longer be friends with each other. I came to the realization that this is a new type of fear mongering to control and subvert the positive power that men of all sexual orientations and all cultures have to foster meaningful friendships. Why? Because when people get on the same page, they get organized, they get stuff done, and change happens- and the powers that be loath change.
Topics: Star Wars, the American hegemony, art influencing culture, Federico García Lorca, Jesus and Buddha- how heterosexual masculine intimacy between two best bros gets demonized by Hollywood and makes us all worse for it.

That’s basic evolution. We are looking for validation from potential sexual partners, so we can know our place in the social hierarchy. That’s why you see different social norms in different places. You are more likely to be progressive, if the society you are trying to fit into is more progressive. It makes sense from an evolutionary perspective.

Crocky Bird >>> If you ask me women don´t love men allthough they are good at pretending like they do. They want power over men nothing more. All these things they complain over that men are doing they do themselves. They want themselves to have the right to do whatever they want and men to have no right to do anything at all. That´s their idea of equality. And they don´t understand why men become like them in order to undermine all their actions and make them see what it is they´re doing to both themselves and men. Today we hear men complain about that the only reason they stay with their woman and don´t get a divorce is because of the kids. We also hear women finding it funny to play on a man´s feeling of jalouxy and frustration allthough they have no reason to and he´s not at all unfaithful. In fact they´ve got all they want and yet that´s neither enough or good enough for a woman. They speak about equality for both genders, and feminism to have a leading role in society. Yet they behave like drunken, vile and rude vikings to whom not even their conquered land mean a damn thing. Because they think they have to act like men to be something in the world despite they preach feminism. I wonder what kind of feminism that is. There was a time when women were the ones who could speak to both a man´s feelings and common sense when he was irrational. That kind of women should return. But today that kind of feminism is trampled down. Oh what a pity...

Thank you for your words about stories. I'm a writer who needed to hear this today. I recently discovered your videos as part of researching combat-related stuff for my books. Trying to break into publishing is difficult and trying to write a great book that will be of real worth to the world is even more difficult. I struggle with disillusionment as a voice in the back of my head says, "Just stop. How important can writing a story be, anyway?" But today you reminded me of the power of a story, how much a story can expand someone's world--or crush it. I guess I can't quit.

Poe and Flynn are just that, bros that saved each other’s asses escaping death and punishment. People will look for ghosts that are not there in anything they want. In other words they’re just looking for their own political or societal agendas in anything and everything. There’s a special place in my heart for the guys from my platoon, but it’s not like I’m in any way sexually attracted to them. If seems like the only people who complained/asserted they were gay, were the same ones who thought that one guy in, Beauty and the Beast, was gay; all because he danced for 5 seconds, in passing, with a guy at a party.

I have just discovered, at the age of 32, that I am not straight. All your videos have always inspired me, but this one maybe most of all, because of the vulnerable state of mind I’m in. I’m a martial arts practitioner, and I train at an MMA gym run by a former UFC fighter. Since my recent self-discovery, I’ve been a man living in fear about my place within life in general, but particularly within the gym I train at. “What would they think?” “Should I tell anyone?” “What if they see me elsewhere and discover my secret?” You have inspired me to just be me and let people think what they think and do what they do. I choose to walk my path in life and deal with the consequences of it with courage. I may struggle, people may try to break me, but it’s my decision to either tap out or find a way to keep fighting. Thank you for your story.

Honestly I wish that were different, I wish I could be different in that way and connect with my emotions and people in general on a deeper level. However purely for Star Wars’ sake I feel like it would’ve been a much more compelling relationship than the token female characters that they added so we would know that they’re not gay. Not to say that those characters were purely added for that, but it felt a little like that. Anyways amazing video, amazing points as always. You know, this might sound weird, but close physical, 'intimate' (but not sexual) contact with other humans, both men and women, is one of my main reasons to practice martial arts. I also think it's something people in Western culture can learn from doing martial arts: getting used (again) to being physically close to another human, moving them around and be moved around. Learn and experience it's ok to be close.

@@cjwrench07 it's star wars, people would show up for it regardless of how poorly written it gets. And to the film's credit, it can be entertaining on a first viewing. That doesn't change the fact that the film was a complete mess that destroyed a lot of interesting aspects of the series while also killing almost all of the interesting story arcs the previous movie left it with, despite being heavily flawed itself. The upcoming film will have to perform a miracle in order to create a conflict or resolution that people will actually care about, let alone meaningfully develop the characters after the previous film pretty much abandoned any intended resolution of character arcs. Abrams is good, but I don't know if he's that good. Also don't even get me started on that fight choreography, it's some of the worst I've ever seen in a film with a professional budget. Even so, I still want to see the series succeed, and I hope Abrams can pull it off. As a side note critics' ratings are really not a dependable benchmark sometimes. It also always irks me how childish fans of the film get when talking about people who didn't like it, calling them incels or manbabies for pointing out legitimate and often significant flaws in the writing.

You've heard the phrase cloak and dagger before, yes? It is literal. Slashing through loose fabric is actually fairly difficult, so you can use the cloak as a sort of shield. And actually you don't need a 'cloak' per-se. Any kind of decent loose cloth. Towels, jackets, shirts, whatever. You put the "Cloak" between you and your attacker, and you can utilize it to bind the weapon and/or the attacker themself, or hide your own movements or weapons. Knowing something about fighting is still going to matter a lot. It's not magic, but it can be helpful. Ramsay has a video that shows a little bit of this technique somewhere in the videos where he tears down the "women's self defense" scam videos.

Yeah, bring back cloaks as fashion! :) As for further interest in how to use cloaks for Defense there are systems based on it; Notably instead of rapier and dagger you use a rapier and cloak. Just like you can trap your opponents rapier (or clear the centreline), before you engage with the rapier, you can also do this with a cloak. (A rapier is a one handed sword of the 15th century onwards, with a very long blade, optimised for the thrust, though they can still cut to varying degrees) Ofcourse, as mentioned, any cloth of a certain size can be used against any bladed weapon, but if you want the earliest teachings of how to do it, and how to use it in concert with your own sword there are treatises on this.

Disney is not Art. Art is creating from genuine inner felt passion. Disney is a few people sitting around a table and starting to analyze how every turn of the story may OFFEND this or that party, this or that ethnic group etc. And this is how they develop their “creativity”. And you may say, how kind, not to want to OFFEND? No, it’s not kindness, it is coming from the fear of reducing Profits.

GIFT1FROM1THE1GODZ , you state that “literally every form of art is profit driven”. This totally wrong. True artist PRIMARY intent is their creative passion, materializing a dream. Only THEN comes a sober financial strategy and hopefully profit. The difference: a feel, a contagious spark that moves the masses. This creations are NOT filtered by a few dicks, they are purely as the Artist dreams them, no clean version. Like Jim Jarmush, Jodorowsky or David Lynch to name a few. If “literally all art was profit driven” then everything would be full of placement. Let’s see what one of the world’s greatest artists think about product placement: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGirysGmk5vOgqg.html. Disney may spend millions on engaging quality craftsmen but high craftsmanship is one thing, pure, untampered by censura artist’s creativity is another. There is one certain communist-like feel in those “all family friendly”, politically correct creations that come from Disney and the such. There is completely different feeling coming from Pink Floyd’s The Wall that was forbidden in UK when it came out. The latter smells like freedom, it is pure, uncompromising artist expression.

Love the video man. Like to add my two cents on this: we’re talking about fictional characters in a fictional story. Different people are gonna read things into the story based on their own perspectives. As a straight man I see Fin and Poe’s relationship as an intimate plutonic friendship whereas gay men and some others may also identify with those characters in a different way. Maybe they see something of their own relationship with their partner in Poe and Fin and I think that’s great. The fact of their (Fin and Poe’s) sexual orientation is pretty irrelevant. I think that a lot of LGBTQ folks want to see more of themselves represented in mainstream film and fiction because their love is real and normal too. I don’t think the characters were intentionally written to be closeted gay men but I think it is a valid subjective take. I also think that homophobia is damaging to straight people as well as LGBTQ folks. Homophobia is not just the fear/hate of LGBTQ but also the fear of being labeled as such because of the social stigma that like you said, in our American culture men shouldn’t be physically or emotionally intimate with one another in a sexual way or otherwise.

All I have to say is - as long as a person travels around the world and experience the difference in culture - he will easily understand what are you talking about. Cultural appropriate things differ from region to region and even if something is frowned upon or even in some cases illegal in some places can be the 'norm' in another. The problem with Hollywood movies is that the directors and script writers are usually very inexperienced or illiterate in a lot of things and aside from market value don't understand a lot of things, especially foreigners. I'm big fan of the cinema as of whole, despite not liking the majority of the movies, I still watch them, just to get in the head of the producers and to analyze their views and motives. It's really nice to watch some Indian movie and some US blockbuster ... they are so much alike it can't be even described with words, then you have Spanish, German, Belgian and Turkish cinema which are ... completely different, from the European films I would say that French are the most to my liking, and from Asia - Korean, while other producer have only a good movies here and there. US despite being one of the biggest movie producers in the world have very little (percentage wise) quality movies. A-a-and, a lot of producers have their own agenda. When you were speaking about the Spanish author - I'm very familiar with Russian literature from the Soviet Union, most of it is 'science fiction', just because everything else (even those) were checked for 'anti-communist propaganda' and if anything even remotely similar was found - the book was censured and never get to a publisher. So it's fun to see how any book, which in some sort had relation to the planet Earth and the human civilization as we know it is always 'there was a world peace - utopia, and all were happy with the communist rules' or anything of that sort.

I've got my best bros. I hug my friends and tell 'em that I love 'em because they're like brothers to me. Some people might see that as gay, but I don't give a shit. I love my friends and I tell them as much, because who knows if I'll live to see tomorrow. An interesting trend I've noticed is that the more aggressively and vocally anti-gay someone is, the more likely they are to be actual closet gays. Their homophobia is like a red herring to distract you from the fact that they're gay as hell. lol.

A lot of times. However some people are 100% not gay and 100% anti-gay. Some people are OK with people being gay. Behind closed doors. Some people just don’t want to watch people be gay and definitely don’t want to be hit on by someone gay. There are some “gay” things you can do & certain clothing you can wear. That would certainly come across as “gay”. However there are certain clothing that neither men nor women should wear! An example would be in see-through leggings especially while upside down & in a handstand position!! Not only would that be considered gay. I don’t believe it’s truly appropriate for men or women!! Because it shows too much shape & even worse it shows too much bear skin! Especially when the persons yes & genitals are up in the air! There’s nowhere where extremely tight pants need to be see through!

The exceptions are the soldiers who also train for the sport of mixed martial arts.

Thank you for your candor on this interesting topic. The notion of masculinity here in the US has been challenged for years. In (at least) the large urban centers (NYC, SF, LA, CHI, ATL, HOU) there is much less social stigma attached to expressing one's sexuality (LGBT) than in previous generations. For example national marriage equality law for same-sex marriages, removal of gender-specific signage for public bathrooms, etc... For combat sports, there doesn't seem to be open and institutionalized discrimination against gay fighters, .well, except for the controversy about transgender fighters who want to fight in the female fighting circuit after gender reassignment surgery. Other than that, I am not aware of professional fighters that are directly a product of the LGBT community. In any case, the fact that sexuality in America has generally/guardedly speaking, never been more open in its history is a good thing. It's good to get an international perspective on these types of issues and I am pleased that you do use your channel to speak on these things. This expands the scope of your subject matter, and I think, in the end makes for a more informed, empathetic fanbase for your channel. Keep up the good work, bro. I hope JX fight club opens soon.

When the PMRC hearings in the US senate were going on, Twisted Sister's singer Dee Snider, when questioned about the implied sexual meanings of their songs, replied something along the lines of: "We often project what we have in ourselves or want to find in the art that we see or watch. So if I'm talking about my struggles with life, someone else may think I'm talking about sexual bondage. I can't help what others think of my songs". And I think this is more or less what's going on when there's shipping in media. Some people see Poe and Finn being closeted gay men because they just can't conceive of having a close friendship with others that isn't simply that, friendship. Oh, and by the way Ramsey. Your Spanish pronunciation is very good. Greetings from Spain!

Depends on the punch. For punches that need to have power, here's a tip, do a sharp exhale as you punch, that'll naturally tighten and engage the core. In traditional martial arts, this'll usually be done with a yell.

The asians especially the Sri Lanka's, Indian, thai and Chinese, have always seen them 5-6 men laying on a single bed together, which by some cultures would be deemed as homosexual but they were all heterosexual. We lie on each others laps, we hug and make little piles and do a lot of things, outside training, that could be seen as less heterosexual and it's all good. It has nothing to do with sexual orientation. It's just us liking eachother and already having exchanged more bodily fluids, in training, than most romantic couples do in a lifetime.

I was completely certain that nobody could ruin the new Star Wars movies more than Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy, but I think you just managed it Ramsey! An interesting take on Poe and Finn that I never even thought about myself. I always figured they were both a bit interested in Rey. But I wouldn´t be surprised if Kennedy was pushing a subtle gay agenda along with all the other agendas. And agendas are fine as long as they don´t come at the expense of the quality of the movie. But the most successful movies are the ones that focus on the story and not why the story needs to be told.

Here’s an example I know China will recognize “Rush Hour” w Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. Now I’m Italian American and we hug all the time. My father , cousin etc. as an adult, I’ve never had an urge to rest my head in their lap or giggle. But a good belly laugh a hug when you meet or part or a boys night out watching sports or arguing politics or other activity is normal. I believe the perceived lack of male intimacy is overstated. Or it may be I’m too old in a culture where seduction has been boiled down to swiping right on your phone so you never have to risk personal rejection or expose your own personality to the scrutiny of others.

One of the big reasons male physical intimacy is considered "gay" behavior is do to early psychologists constructing homosexuality as a static state of being with it's set of stereotypes. This leads to a constant pressure on men to prove their straightness. The process lead to a rapid atrophying of male physical and emotional intimacy, which became most pronounced in the post world war two era. So in short, we can blame the medicalization of homosexuality for all the flaws of modern masculinity.

The problem is American has a thousand different categories and you'd best stay in the box you choose. So if you are gay you are okay (sort of) but you need to act in expected ways. If the gay is good looking from a female perspective and doesn't act stereotypically, he may find himself in a bit of trouble. If a guy is heterosexual and likes some type of fashion/music that might be considered gay, he will be in trouble. America's supposed acceptance of gays has done more harm than good in my opinion. Any skinny kid who kind of keeps to himself is bullied and called gay nowadays.

It's important to me that I tell you and I hope you get, it's absolutely not against social norms to be gay in this country. I live in the Deep South and if you don't know it is very......not progressive but even where I live there are openly gay men and they aren't chastised or treated like a pariah. As a matter of fact if you're a homophobe that will pretty much limit your friends and limit the circles you can move in. These activist are fighting a fight that has already been won because they get social strokes by making themselves out the victims. This is a big deal right now because it is one part of a cult of identity that is tearing this country apart. Please don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

I think it has two reasons, first lazy writing of friendships that are written like romances in movies and secondly, that hollywood di use queercoiding so long that you expect those characters to be gay unless you go through the trouble to write a convincing close friendship. Dont blame people who got that massage in media, blame the industry that still uses the romantic formula or close friends while using it to portrait gay character you have to search to find them. Many movies write friendships and romance the same way. And series. Show semi realistic gay characters openly in media on a regular basis and no one will question male intimicy anymore. No one gay or not should be ashamed for their natural emotions be they agressive or vunerable. In every field. Hollywood would get back a lot of fans i they would be willing to reform their culture. Be willing to be more risky. Those sellouts. There are many awesome stories, i like myths. Stories really have power like the epos of gilgamesh that shaped storytelling, and has a presumely bisexual male main character, it is way too homoerotic and doesnt say that it isnt. Would be an interesting movie, if you would agnowledge that fact because its the epos that is the basis ogf all eposes..

yeah I'm Argentinian from the u.s. and I kiss my dad and all my family members on the cheek its just what you do. seems like just a normal sign of affection to me. We share this with Italians, Spaniards and other Latinos. Also I think theres 2 camps implying Fin and Po had romantic undertones to their relationship, theres the people who think its funny and are playing it as a joke, because I think this homophobia instills a fear of being too close with your male friends. and then theres people who saw it as a possibly unintentional portrayal of how 2 masculine men in a context where they're doing a lot of manly action stuff might develop affection or romantic feelings towards each other and that that would be a positive thing because too often we get portrayals of gay romance that are very 2 dimensional and largely based on straight people's idea of what a gay relationship has to be. which is of course very limiting and serves to keep straight people thinking "gays are like this, they are different than us". like if you had 99% of straight relations portrayed on screen written by gay people, featuring characters that are what a gay man thinks stereotypical straight people are, you'd look at that and say, hold up, that doesnt really accurately represent me or my marriage, this is kind of misleading. So while the 7th star wars movie wasnt my jam, I'm much more a fan of rogue one, I think fin and po had a cool dynamic and obviously if people want to ship them, go right ahead. its fan fiction. if people can infer that jar jar binx is actually a sith lord pulling all the strings behind the fall of the republic while acting like a cartoonish bafoon to fool the jedi, then why not infer Fin and Po have the hots for each other? it adds a dimension of intrigue to an otherwise sub-par star wars movie imo. and thank you Ramsey for pointing out that people of all sexual orientations can have strong platonic bonds. PSA if one of your bro's tells you he's gay or bi it doesnt mean he wants to have sex with you. he just thought you were decent enough of a person to trust and probably is attracted to a totally different kind of guy than you.

I never felt that Fn and Po were closeted. I mean, I didn't feel that they were sure themselves if their intimate feelings are not strictly platonic. My impression is that they are intimately engaged as platonic friends and *could* be romantic, but that they have more pressing worries than just teenaged will they won't they stuff. I would really like to see Disney take that route because it's a well written romance as much as it's a well written friendship. It's good to see healthy relationships regardless of if the relationship is romantic or platonic. But I totally feel you, because of my position as a woman. Imagine my deep feelings of vindication and amazement to see the end of Pacific Rim and the leads weren't arbitrary forced together in a world where women can't exist in a not sexual/romantic sphere. In at least one movie, there is two well developed leads, with a healthy well developed friendship, who could potentially be romantic, but at the moment they have a deep, fulfilling and intimate platonic bond. So really, either way I see a well made relationship that is healthy to imitate. But man I do feel you on that "what's wrong with a healthy, deep platonic relationship?" Cause it's not like lacking romance; romance isn't the only form of intimate relationship. Imagine if you told your mother that; Mom, my SO is more important than you because romance is the highest form of relationship.
