Once-thriving towns lie derelict, the last few residents barely scratching a living. These towns were built for the railway - they supplied its workers and its commerce, but now the railway has become so inefficient it is no longer economical. The government is left with a quandary: to sell off the railways, or to try and revitalise it with public funds.

Wow. This was 20 years ago. Today the railway infrastructure is looted including the rail tracks itself looted by sophisticated crime syndicates at night. Imagine breaking down railway tracks weighting tons (thousands and thousands of kilograms). Looting the steel of the tracks and sell it off at the port of durban etc. And useless SAPS simply allow this. I don't even want to talk about the trains itself. Wow. Cry the beloved country.
