    Yeah I actually don’t think half of them know what capitalism/socialism is, especially comparatively on a global scale. There is so much nuance within capitalism and socialism, and most Nordic countries that Mimi mentioned are actually a social democracy which leans more on the capitalist side, but applies socialist models to certain aspects of society that are deemed basic necessities for all people.

    One mayor problem is that people in the US seem to be incapable of nuance. I'm from Norway, and I keep hearing people using my country or other Nordic countries as examples of how socialism works, and while it is true that we have a well working system, it is somewhat of a misrepresentation. The major economic concept used in in Nordic countries is capitalism, not socialism. It's just that we have collectively agreed that certain functions of society cannot be run using a capitalist model. Capitalism at it's core tries to profit off of a product. If you make humans the product, you immediately step out on shaky ethical grounds. That's why things like healthcare, education, welfare, housing, child care etc. is handled using a socialist model rather than a capitalist model in the Nordic countries. Taking the best parts of both capitalism and socialism, and getting rid of the bad parts of both, creates the best systems.

  • @jdh1206

    @jdh1206

    Agree completely. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Nordic countries are a capitalist economic system with very high tax rates. The high tax rates create a large social safety net which pays for things such as healthcare. By definition this is not socialism. No country in the modern world is socialist because in no country do the people own the means of production.

  • @mikkelkristensen880

    @mikkelkristensen880

    @@jdh1206 Completely correct. I am from Denmark, which, obviously, also run on the Nordic Model. Our previous PM was out correcting Sanders saying that we are NOT a socialist country, but a capitalist market based economy, with high taxes which makes out our huuuge social security net. In my opinion, when you try to profit off basic needs, such as education, healthcare et cetera, the incentives becomes wickedly screwy, and not for the better being of the people, but for the sake of profits, which the original commenter also stated. We are literally the happiest, wealthiest countries in the world, and, objectively (of course, this is also a very subjective matter) the best countries in the world, if you base it on these parametres. Why the Nordic Model isn't somewhat adopted by other nations, i can't comprehend. Sanders was a great bid at a guy who could really point things in the right direction, but unfortunately, everything that has to do with high taxes and free basic needs, is apparently communism, according to the majority of Americans.

  • @jeremyanderson3819

    @jeremyanderson3819

    You were right the first time. There is no nuance in america, so when we are talking about "socialism" it could actually be anything from your social-capitalism to Maoist communism. Just like when you say capitalism you probably arent talking about the anarcho capitalism that the far right in america is visualizing.

  • @ahoel3814

    @ahoel3814

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@TheHeartlessHeroes You're right. None of the words are very well understood by the US population. Social democrats coined the term "democratic socialism" back in the early/mid 1900's as an opposition to the authoritarian socialism in Russia at the time. The people most fond of "democratic socialism" were in fact socialists, but in the way that they supported work place democracy rather than hierarchy, equal rights and pay in the work place, and some even a socialist model of distribution of the country's resources. This is somewhat different to the social democracies of the Nordic countries, but often less different than what you would think. Though the Nordic and Scandinavian nations use a mainly capitalist economic model, the governments tend to own at least parts of the companies responsible for national resources. This is done to make sure the people of the country gets their share of the resources from their country, and the wealth isn't just given away to a few companies. That's why the Norwegian oil fund exists. Try looking up the size of it, and you'll understand why this kind of model is so benefitial to Norway's population.

Social democratic parties in the Nordic countries actually accept capitalism and market economy as a tool. The system is not based around equality of outcome it's based around equality of opportunity. With safety nets, free college, free dental care and medicare for all. I have noticed that a lot of people in US call themselves democratic socialist but their beliefs actually fall under social democracy and social liberalism which is very different.

    @@OniNoFro right-wing waves started to effect Sweden around the 1970 and then it escalated in the 90s. The escalation began with the famous model "new public management". which made it so bureaucratic/ Public Administration started to shrink. The government started selling a lot of "state-owned monopolies. The economy was simply liberalized and the market became more free. The only monopoly the state still controls are alcohol and games. Last thing that really made Sweden liberal was when we entered EU. There is a law within EU that say there "must be a free market economy" which effected Sweden heavily. I'm not saying this is all good btw NPM have flaws which are very annoying, maybe it went too far but the system Sweden had in the 70s is not something I would want to go back to. The tax system was kinda broken. -However there is a interesting fact which is- since the 70s the middle class haven't grown, it's been stagnated for a while now. And most people don't know this but Sweden is actually a tax paradise. There is no what you would call "Robin Hood Tax" nor inheritance tax nor capital tax. Because Sweden is a tax paradise lots of millionaires and billionaires live here, if you look per capita we have second most billionaires and 3rd most millionaires in the world. This is obviously still very good for Sweden because even if rich people don't pay what you may say "their fair share of taxes" they will pay a lot which pay for Sweden's social program which helps the poor. So if you are an American it's problematic to have Sweden as your ideal model because we have to adapt to EU. USA should do it's own thing and if you believe like I do in "equality for opportunity" vote for free college and safety nets and try fix your private insurance. BTW you are a legend if you read all of this idk why i typed so much

    Uh.... no thats not true. I think that there is a nuanced argument to be made about how capitalism promotes the power of money in politics, where money is equated to speech (ie. Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission). The argument he was making was that it is this problem (a problem created by capitalism) that has created and continues to enlarge the military-industrial complex (just research what this is and I won't have to explain anymore). So when you say that "government taking money and giving it to the military" or "the military is an extension of the government, NOT privately owned" that's not true because it is the government buying from PRIVATE producers that enables them to gain the wealth to continue influencing politicians into giving them money. In this way it is the capitalist system's hold over governance that creates the immense military spending ($4 trillion to $6 trillion just from wars in Iraqi and Afghanistan). I'm not saying that there aren't ways that the military-industrial complex can be combated within capitalism (even though it is part of a fundamental conflict between democracy and capitalism), but the way that you are disagreeing with it is either deeply uniformed or disingenuous.

  • @seandoyle296

    @seandoyle296

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@colmobrienoleary2518 You walked that argument around only to come to a half-hearted conclusion. The military remains unowned by private interests, even if the military is heavily co-operative with private interests. You're correct in saying this symbiotic relationship of government funding for R&D and weapons creations and buying new technology inflates the military, improves it incredibly, even, but the insinuation still doesn't work. The holier-than-thou Socialist dude defined Capitalism as giving money to the military. You're adjusting the claim to make an entirely different argument, since the military isn't receiving money, it's buying products created by private interests, tied to military hardware and tech. Funny thing is, this can really be reduced to the model of "supply and demand", and that in itself can refer to small free-market capitalism. You have tanks, I want tanks, I'll buy the best tanks. You have apples, I want apples, I'll buy the best apples. You won't get any defense from me over regime change wars and the U.S.'s continued presence in the Middle East. It's been noted the military buys in great excess from private places and the symbiosis around it is heavily based in people making money. Still, the claim that Capitalism is "money being poured into the military" hasn't been proven. Private interests do business with and embolden the military in size and strength. So that means Capitalism is, to your point not his, the exchange of money from the government, to private companies for goods and services. A model that can be broken down to ANY exchange between a supplier and customer, that doesn't need to be nearly as nefarious as perpetuating foreign wars for oil, contracts and imperial domination.

    It also doesn't help Mimi's point given that he, very early on, praises Norway, and presumably similar economic markers known as the Nordic economic models. Thing is, these models aren't Socialist. You want me to ask about the military industrial complex? Sure, if you go ask your average Scandinavian if their country decentralized economic power and redistributes it on a level that eliminates ALL hierarchies. Spoiler, it doesn't. They implement Socialist policies around and Capitalist economy, making it more of a hybrid framework. If we're to be well informed and not disingenuous, it'd be better to say that Capitalistic pursuits between the military and private interests have become corrupted, becoming profit driven toward the point of putting themselves in a very critical spotlight. The regulated Capitalism of Norway, Denmark, Finland, etc, is Capitalism done right. A pursuit of profit to a point that doesn't involve imperialistic regime change wars and a relationship of constant buying of excess military goods (and in many cases, the reselling of weapons to foreign entities).

    Like people have written the economy in my country (sweden) and nordic countries is capitalistic. I think what I like about our country that would fall under socialism is perhaps the free healthcare and education, everyone pays high taxes so that everyone can have a chance to get good education and healthcare. That doesn't mean I care about random strangers. It might sound harsh but I really don't care about people other than my friends and family, I pay my taxes for the good of the people in my country and I want our citizens to be able to have all these stuff available but it's not on a personal level if that makes sense, I guess I just think that more good comes out of us helping each other to takw care of our society than being completely self centered but I would still agree with the "all humans are inherently selfish" it just depends on what important to each individual

Nobody said life was nice. It’s not. That’s life. But freedom is better than comfort and being controlled by the government. Why would you trust the government with your life like that? Haven’t you learned from history? Look at what happens every time. Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
