My wife and I volunteered at aid station 5 shorty after mile 115 (185 km). Si came through high on his bonk-o-meter but took a minute to converse with me, a fan who was star struck. Si was cheerful and genuine though he was deep in the race. It's great to know your hero's are great person's in real life off the camera! Si, to clarify, my wife and I watch the GCN network each night before bed, not that you put us to sleep. Glad you and GCN came to the race!

Doing over 100 miles in a day on mostly roads is already pretty taxing. Doing that over gravel roads and with lots of mountain climbing all throughout is insane especially in under 10 hours like that. Guy is a beast. That would be enough to even bonk out Mark Beaumont. (the endurance one not the GMBN one)

The way gravel grinding has taken off in the United States is amazing. From the weekend rides in the country to the big races more and more people are rediscovering the joy they found in cycling as kids. Am I the only one who has noticed the similarity between the early road races in Europe and North American gravel grinding. Back then the roads were bad, the stages were long, support vehicles were unknown and it was every rider for him or herself. That is where we are with gravel grinding. I just wish adventure riding had taken off when I was young 50 years ago.

The more I watch these gravel events, the more I want to do them. I raced the Boulder Roubaix (~ 50/50 pavement/gravel) this year and it was of my favorite events so far. I might have to try Steamboat next year if I can borrow or buy a gravel bike. Speaking of, yes, Steamboat is an awesome place. And I’m glad that you got to experience a true Colorado altitude bonk. I too yelled at the Rocky Mountains and the wind during a race earlier this year. I was definitely “cross”!
