After Putin's attacks on Ukraine, the US White House, the EU and much of the rest of the world hit Russia with strong sanctions targeting their access to key technologies and the global financial system. From chip imports to SWIFT, the sanctions are hard and many companies also decided to pull out. Will they work?

I work in IT consulting company in Russia. Worked on projects in currently sanctioned big bank. All databases are on Oracle, analytics and other system- on SAP. Oracle and SAP have stopped IT support. Needless to say my colleagues from IT department in this bank are in panic mod. Such huge IT environment can't be maintained without 24/7 support from IT providers. Soon it will start to crash. P.S. My company is western based and closes it's office in Moscow. In 2 moths I will be unemployed. 500 out of 2000 employees agreed for relocation ANYWHERE from Russia. Me as well. Specialist exodus from Putin's Russia is going to be enormous.

@Bri Ba There was a reason why German and Italian regimes were not overthrown by there own people during WW2. Putin's Russia is hyper-repressive these days. Any act of protest, or even the lack of active support for this war (they force school kids and students into pro-war flashmobs, and expel those who don't want to), will have harsh consequence. Sadly to say, but everything is in hands of "Ukrainian IT workers in camo and holding AKs". Longer they stand up - faster Putin regime will crash.

This is why you would set up Parity and Redundancy among the most important Cloud. My last job was in a massive hospital, and current at the top 3 banks in the US. Our systems are so redundantly reinforced there is never a milisecond of outage time. The possibility of 100x devices backing up data and configurations I couldn't tell you. I do know in my enviroments, downtime doesn't happen due to hardware or software problems. The IaaS takes over. Which could be anywhere in the world. As is physical data centers. Given that implementation, there is PLENTY of months even to get what you need to replace a node in the architecture. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

If it takes 3 months to make a complicated chip (a figure I vaguely recall reading somewhere recently) and you stop taking orders from Russia because of sanctions, then even when the sanctions end and you start taking orders again, they're going to be waiting a further 3 months to get any chips. What might be a 6-month set of sanctions in general might turn into a 9-month one for chips, just due to manufacturing complexity.

I'd like to add on your point at around 8:00. The Chip blockage is far far far more devistating as you think. I've worked as an embedded software dev for 20 years and those chips usage goes far beyond than most people think here are just some I've worked on. Chips in gasstations, sewages, waterplants, oilplants, food production etc etc etc. Everything which is somewhat automated/remote controlled with logics in place is royally fucked to put it lightly. It won't even take 1 year until major consequences are beginning to appear in normal peoples life. Fresh water, gas and food will get wracked sooner or later as everything requires modern chips these days. I'am really interested in the way the russians are gonna deal with it. Even us without any trade restrictions had problems the last 3 years due to the semiconductor shortages especially in embedded fields. sry that my grammar sucks hard, but I really wanted to make clear how depended a modern civilization is from these chips. The most basic infrastracture is dependend on it. a little edit for further info. The lowest russian semiconductors got around 130~ nm. They've claimed to produce 90nm but that one never came to light so most likely a propaganda hoax.

You are 100% correct my friend. General purpose chips have insinuated themselves into almost all business. This is why people do not understand the situation in Taiwan. It would be insane for the world to allow China to destroy the largest and most advanced chip maker in the world. Like the Chi-Coms did to the Hong Kong business, they would do the same to Taiwan if they were allowed to. That would cause the tech world to completely collapse. And that would cause a world-wide industrial collapse and thus world wide DEPRESSION.

The issue is that Russia and China are not allies in the same way that Western countries are allies. Russia and China are only united in their shared hatred of the West. But the West actually has a bond that extends beyond mere shared interests. Western countries are very similar genetically, culturally, and religiously. Russia and China are completely different civilizations. Russia is a Slavic Orthodox Christian regime. China is basically a Han supremacist, atheistic regime. So Chinese don’t care about Russians. They will exploit Russia, and Russians are entering a place where they are in no position to resist.

Russia, the largest nation on earth, has access to huge natural resources, and an educated, scientifically literate population, and yet its economy is reliant on commodities such as energy and minerals, and ordinary citizens have a relatively low standard of living. The only people who make money are the oligarchs, and they hoard it to themselves, investing in Western economies and assets, and educating their children in the UK and Americ. Putin himself has become incredibly wealthy by stamping down the aspirations of the people he supposedly represents, and has salted away the proceeds with his billionaire friends. For twenty years he has looked backwards with nostalgia to the Soviet era, and he has kept Russia facing in the same direction, while lining his own pockets very deeply. Russia, which once held its own in the space race, has fallen further and further behind the West, and been overtaken by China, and the other rising economies in the East. The only thing he has invested in consistently is the military, and now we see that even that is not as effective as he supposed. He's let his country down very badly, if they did but know it. However he still has enormous potential to do damage - a nuclear weapon can still get by on 75 year old technology, after all. He's signed his own fate now, but who will he take down with him?

This includes food safety (think testing for toxic chemicals on food), petroleum and chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, medical diagnostics (especially due to some acquisitions in the past decade in cell analysis and CRISPR technology), and chemical and biology research. On March 2, our CEO announced two things. First, we are halting shipments of all equipment except diagnostics and health care to Russia. And limiting in-country service of already deployed equipment to existing diagnostics and healthcare customers. Second, our cheritable foundation is donating $100k to relief organizations supporting the Ukraniran people, and are providing 1:1 corporate matching for employees donating to similar organizations. Just another example of what private organizations can do to support the Ukraniran defenders.

They don't provide human right but it's still better then starving to death that has what CCP has done overtime. Is it all because of there own effort?- the answer is no. But Have they taken full credit ? - answer is yes. With Chinese economy slowing due to bad terms with others, other starting to pull out there resources, their bad one child policy ie a shrinking working class people. Historically all dictatorship collapse by public is done when the times turns bad and still their behaviour don't change. If thing are getting better general public will tolerate more and more but when things start to turn bad even earlier level of tolerance start to be less. CCP is not that stupid Atleast what I think for world to put halt in there economy by giving them very clear reason to do so. But even small changes overtime will affect a lot in long run. I really don't see CCP lasting anything more then next 60 years. To long but slowing and degrowth will take that much time only

The really interesting part is just the small inefficiencies that get randomly created. Business has a will of its' own and will always move towards being more and more efficient. The more pieces you remove, just means every little business action becomes less efficient and therefore more expensive and it compounds. Even the things Russia still can do on its' own, will now be more expensive..at a time when the Ruble is down almost 40%. Currency getting less valuable, and at the same time every business function getting more expensive. And Russia is not like the USA who can basically print money to get through a trying time, Russia can't just print money because the overall pool of Rubles is magnitudes of order less than the USD.

Gonna be the cold war all over again. Except this time, its China/Russia vs India/America/Europe America needs closer ties with India. That may just happen naturally tho, since the entirety of punjab practically immigrated here lol

@@honkhonk8009 Are you aware that India supports Russia? They buy a lot of Russian military equipment, so aren't condemning the genocide.

@@londonspade5896 Who else would India be buying from? Their entire military has been reliant on Russia since the 70s. Imagine if a country like Germany all of a sudden tried using Chinese equipment. It would be impossible to fully transition, and would be expensive. For this reason, India is mostly reliant on Russia for their military. However, there has been a massive push to become independent from Russia, and slowly switch over to western equipment. Thats why India also maintains a relationship with the US. That may be changing with this braindead fuck Modi in charge, but still.
