Can Oregon’s DEFENSE be a CHAMPIONSHIP level UNIT?

Спорт

We all know what the Oregon Ducks have on the offensive side of the football, but what about defense? Can Dan Lanning's defense be good enough in 2024 to get the Ducks to the top of the college football mountain?

For whom? The Ducks? Cuz Michigan has two All-American Defensive Tackles this year who are sophomores, Kenneth Grant (who is over 315 and runs a 4.6, outran amd hogtied Braelen Allen PSU like baby swine) and Mason Graham (cannot triple team him). Duck fans need to check reality and look at whether their fans want to smak talk or earn it on the field. Don't go down the path of reading your wannabe press clippings. Just sayin'. You could end up like "the" delusional OSU fans. who every year proclaim national championhips - even though they have not beaten UM in 5 years. It wasn't safeties, it was the pass rush which spun the head of UW's QB,. Without Mikey Sainristil, a Nickel, they would have never beaten Bama.

The biggest unknown for Oregon this year is game after game of smash mouth football and cold midwest/eastern weather.. Can Oregon stay healthy and will depth provide enough to over come what could happen. It's these UNKNOW's that are my biggest "worry" for Oregon's season.. I believe that the coaching and talent are on the roster. It's going to be an exciting season.. GO DUCKS

Well summarized. The unknowns of the new conference will remain unknowns until we see games played. That said, if third string depth and weather are the biggest questions, then you're in decent shape. Also, BIG10 offenses aren't exactly challenging so it really is just a question of adjusting to style weekly like you said.

While Oregon doesn’t get as cold as Madison or Ann Arbor. Oregon DOES get cold and Snow. And Washington definitely gets snow. A 2 years ago, Oregon went to Boulder on a VERY cold and windy game @ Colorado. I was at that game and needed 2 layers to remain somewhat warm. Oregon won 45-10 without missing a beat. W Snow can be a factor but the cold won’t.

Oregon's defensive rating was against PAC12 offenses (substantially better than most B1G offenses). There is a reason Ryan Day (who was mocked horribly for how he ended the season last year) hired Chip Kelly from UCLA and Carlos (RB coach) from Oregon. He wants a PAC12 level offense. The B1G is not better on offense than last years PAC12. Not close. Meaning, I expect an increase in Oregon's defensive stats just because Oregon is playing in the downgraded offenses in the B1G. Yes, all teams are maneuvering and trying to improve (I mentioned Ohio). Oregon was a Top10 scoring defense last year... playing against teams in a conference with the best offenses relative to all conferences. So, yes, I expect Oregon's defense to improve and it likely remains Top10.

I'm glad you brought this up. I edited this part of my recording out for time. Pac 12 was deeper and better on offense last year than the Big Ten, that shouldn't be an argument for anybody, its a reason why I said I believe they can be a Top 10-15 defense at the end of the video. Oregon's secondary will have better matchups in probably every game on their schedules besides maybe Ohio State. If the Ducks shut down the pass and let their edge rushes go to work, that could be a dangerous combo.

People forget how much of a jump that defense took between 2022 and 2023. In scoring defense, Oregon took a 66 spot jump from #75 all the way to #9. The only time Oregon allowed more than 30 points were to Washington. And you’ll almost never see that type of offense anymore.

And there was another Podcast that thought that Oregon's defense did a pretty good job of pushing Ohio States offense around 3 years ago. So if Oregon pushed some people around then, just imagine how significant the D-Line is 3 years later. Oregon's defense IMO, is ready for the B1G.

Defense has no holes and great depth at all positions. The main question is what is the ceiling? There is not a Caleb Downs, Mason Graham, or Will Johnson caliber player yet. That said, if the offense is top 5 again, the defense will be more than enough for a playoff team. There are absolutely question marks but there is reason to be optimistic. We'll see!

Oregon's defense would have fared better against almost any other team... In the off-season Dan Lanning addressed what Washington exposed... Washington's offense was the special case last year... They did not play the best football against Michigan... Washington didn't play at their ceiling consistently... Penix looked awful... He's look that bad against other teams with much worse defenses than Michigan... Bottom line... Oregon's defenses a lot better than you think it is. You don't know what you're talking about.
