@@Cute__Marshall-l3q It all depends on the severity of your condition. There are several types of fistulas that can range in complexity/recovery. Generally speaking, if your case isn't complex, fistulotomy's should resolve the condition in a surgery or two with pain depending on how much tissue and muscle is affected. The only way you'll get as close to an answer as possible before your surgery is to get an MRI and have your surgeon look over it to determine the location and severity. I can't emphasize it enough though, get a specialist. Find a Colorectal surgeon because general surgeons typically don't deal with complex cases and I found that out the hard way. All of my surgeries had varying levels of pain, with the first 2 weeks being the most difficult.

To anyone struggling with this condition please don't read the comments. I feel like my research and the comments don't match up. I hope that the people in the comments are extreme rare cases. I had a double fistula which the doctor called 'complicated fistula' and I just had surgery to drain abscess and place a seton for the first fistula and the doctor told me I will have the seton for 6 weeks after which we will begin treating the second fistula. I am totally scared and terrified and the comments I read here made it worse because they said they have been having 5+ surgeries to no avail. I really hope that's not the case from me. Doctor, I am not looking for medical advice, just reassurance and hope that I could be healed fully, preferably within a few months.

I hope your recovery starts to get better and you can start to feel better/manage your pain. If you have reoccurring fistula and it comes back again, you should request a referral to a Colorectal surgeon if you don't already have one. General Surgeons do not typically have much experience in complex cases, at least in my own personal experience. I have had MANY surgeries for the same condition and have learned different ways to manage it. Warm baths with Epsons multiple times a day really helps with the flare ups

I took antibiotics course of 7 days. After 2 weeks when I went to that doctor again there was another doctor she said there's nothing except fissures. On my insisting she call the first doctor who diagnosed me with fistula n then they said if it's not bothering you then there's no need of surgery. I've never seen pus on my cloths, I've increased my water intake there's no constipation n bleeding after that. So what should I do? Should I still go for surgery? Or for how often should I go for an exam? Please answer as it was shocking for me.

Thank you for the information doctor. Can you live with a fistula ? cause all of these surgeries look to have no end. Im 42 with no history of medical ailments. 8 months dealing with an abscess . First had it opened and is still draining but a new abscess formed that made its own drain... level 6 of pain but not sidelined. Do tons of jiu jitsu and surf.. thoughts ? I have a proctologist that i trust , got a 2nd opnion and now im waiting for a MRI .

I was wondering the same thing doctor? Can you live with anal fistula even if you want to go through the pain and other cons that come with it? Because I agree with the surgeries having no end, but I want a 2nd opinion about it. I’ve seen online that it says it could lead to cancer if left untreated is that true or false? Btw I’m only 23 & every doctor always tells that I’m very young to have this and that’s it’s very rare for my age.

I had fissure and internal and external haemorrhoids. I had gone through LIS and laser hemorrhoidectomy surgery 11 months ago. But this fissure and white discharge keeps coming back after surgery. From last 1 month, it is really painful but I tried to manage the pain but nothing helped. Yesterday I visited my surgeon again and he is suggesting for Trans rectal ultrasound because he think it’s fistula. Can my earlier surgeries cause fistulas?
