The most disappointing fact is that my fellow Indians are even not confident enough and abusing their own country. It is because of people like these the nation is not able to achieve the development and success it deserved. These are the people who carries the attitude of "Sab chalta hain " and will never do anything to make their country a better place. They are just waiting for a miracle to make things perfect automatically. It is true that Mumbai in current situation is not comparable to Shanghai but hey Shanghai was also not the same place 25 years back. They have worked hard and achieved their current position. If Indian people really want to improve their city and country then they should change their mentality and believe that we can develop our cities as well so that it can line up in the world's best city to live. Cursing the government is not always the solution ( which we have become habitual of doing ) of all the problems. A city becomes great by the people who live in it and not by its government. In India even we have examples of great cities like Chandigarh where people are self aware and are actually concerned about their city and because of that Chandigarh is considered to be one of the most cleanest city in India. If we all change our mentality and actually start caring about our city and country then becoming the next Shanghai is not a tough task.

One thing Indians can do to improve road experience is to require drivers to follow traffic rules and stop people from peeing and defecating on the road sides. I am hopeful India will be as clean and beautiful as other cities in Japan, Korea and China in a few decades. Indians are intelligent and open to learning from others.

+David Durville I think India is a very arrogant nation, probably only 10--15 years ago, the India's media and politicians also believe that Mumbai developed than Shanghai, now Modi claimed that India's economic growth may exceed China. If it isn‘t a clear understanding of your own, let alone open it and learn.

Mumbai should be compared with Manila, both are of similar level in city hardware and size of the slum.

None of the Indian cities will ever or can ever become another Singapore, let alone Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Chongqing. Look at all the tourist attractions in China. Look at the water towns in China. Look at all the super sky-scrapers in China. Stop dreaming. All those Metro, what half-speed train, space programme, military power and mega shopping centres are just pain-killers for the Indians. Accept your fate, Indians. The Chinese progress so rapidly because they are very humble and have never bragged about their achievement. The Chinese have never proclaimed they are a super power as they have always kept a low profile. Have you seen one video made by the Chinese about their achievement in Olympics? All are made by foreigners. India won 6 medals in the London Olympics and they have the cheek to produce a video to brag about Indian pride. Malaysia is a rich country but they have always remained humble. What if you're Asia's superpower? Are you going invade and loot others' achievements? Their toilets?

If Indians can get rid of its deep seeded caste beliefs, then India will definitely be able to move forward very quickly as a nation. Because with it's current system, a very big population of untapped potential is being wasted away because of this ridiculous 'tradition'. Similarly, I think China should start encouraging strong leadership, thinking outside the box, and the call to challenge teachers like Indian students are rather than just following the books and teacher and lacking creativity. Then China too can definitely walk past the shadow of 'copying' and become its own.

It's beautiful to dream big and have sky high aspirations but Indians must understand that slaves don't make progress. First get rid of Western slavery than definitely Mumbai can be most beautiful city in planet. Mumbai geography is far better than Shanghai.

I am sure Bombay Calcutta & Madras will become soon ahead of Shanghai in coming here as predicted here in Germany by the think thank too. Hindustan the projects are completed more faster and efficiently then in China, i am not sure but heard that Bombay or Calcutta were very dirty cities no law enforcers in British Raj and now both the cities are much better planned clean very strict law & order the Police and Fire dept are one of the best in the world with latest high tech devices & equipments and one of the best well dressed police in the world. The population burst will bring more boost to economy as more housing more school more transport more jobs. So i am sure in coming few year time Bombay Calcutta & Madras will be much ahead and high tech smart cities. Jai Shri Ram Mera Bharat mahan :)

Way before Nanpu Bridge, Vidyasagar Setu was build in Kolkata using almost the same technique. But the matter of fact is that to become a developed country and economy we should not only concentrate on building skyscrapers but should look for over all development in health , infrastructure and economy where China is also developing.

We already have two Iconic bridges over Ganges connecting Kolkata and there is no need of more so we going for an under river metro project which is not even present in china my friend. And apart from that there are few newly constructed bridges over Ganges in the kolkata suburbs which u have missed i guess. May be china is far ahead but we are rising first as well.

First, India government should learn how to improve their own citizen living standard and advanced its economy. A government without enough income cannot spend much in infrastructure and to provide incentive to private sector to do business. Do you know the CHinese doesn't like to compare to one specific country but they like to implement the best from each country. So, Indian brother, stop comparing to China and start to do your work!!!!!!!!
